[TOMT] [Phrase] Inverse of "In the land of the blind, the man with one eye is king". by hmsllamain tipofmytongue

Are you by chance looking for the phrase "Big Fish in a Small Pond"? Meaning one is hot stuff in relation to ones peers, but against a larger universe is not really that exceptional.

I can't believe no one has upvoted you yet. What a classic.

You left out the fact that China itself is subtly stamping out Cantonese. "Mandarin" is more correctly labeled "Modern Standard Chinese".

Bernie Sanders introduces a bill that bans financial executives from regulating themselves by taking positions at the Federal Reserve by griffin_peterin politics

[–]BeowulfShaeffer -1 points0 points ago

I'm not sure this is relevant. Do we expect our President to be an expert in military maneuvering? No, but he is put at the head of the military. I think you could make similar arguments for why we don't want financial execs running the fed.

Nurse refuses student inhaler during asthma attack (teenager's mother finds him locked inside the nurse's office, unconscious on the floor.) by Sugar_Skullin politics

Especially when it's fucking Albuterol. They practically give this stuff away and the probability of it doing any harm to someone borders on zero. Denying Albuterol to a person having an asthma attack in front of you is sadistic, locking the door and walking away should in my mind probably be criminal.

The biggest goof in Jurassic Park. by DreadnaughtHamsterin movies

That last scene with the T-Rex in the pavilion was completely gratuitous. I seem to remember reading that they had extra budget and just really liked T-Rex so they gave him another scene just for fun. And to teenage me it was awesome.

I was hoping for Trogdor when I clicked that. God I loved Peasant's Quest. Now I see that almost no one in the thread even gets it.

My piano cover of Yiruma's "River flows in you". Criticism appreciated by SuperBrad213in piano

I've never heard the piece before. You played it with a nice even tone but perhaps too even - it got a bit boring and frankly a bit lifeless. I think the piece would be a lot more interesting if you played the "fancier" parts with a bit of "dramatic volume swell".

What are some digital pianos with light, "shallow" action? by getinletsgoin piano

Try the Nord - they have very light but very responsive actions. See if you can find an NP88.

OnaZ is definitely the go-to guy in this reddit when it comes to piano mechanics.

I have a huge great room. It would fit, although my family would probably leave me for making all that goddamn noise.

Only to a point though. Yammies are consistently bright, especially older ones that have been played hard. I played a brand-new C6 at a store this weekend that was wonderful, and then I played one with a few miles on it. The latter piano has a better action (had been broken in a bit) but it was noticeably brighter and lacking a bit of subtely of the newer one. The brand new one had just wonderful tone but also had a bit of a metallic "tweeeeeeeiiiiiiiaaaaannng" decay on some of the high notes - I don't know if that's something easily tweaked.

All that said I prefer playing the yammies to steinways, even though I suck so bad I make them both sound awful. Steinways (as a rule) seem harder to control - I feel like the sound gets away from me very easily.

Ha ha - I posted this hoping OnaZ would chime in.

I've heard that pianos that big are actually pretty slow to move because the market for them is so small. Maybe the seller managed to lowball the seller and now just want to be rid of it.

Or maybe it was completely destroyed at a party :)

The CFIII is Yamaha's flashship 9 foot piano, and this one was just some guy's personal piano? A physician so it probably was taken care of. Obviously one would want have it checked out but that's a LOT of piano for the price. I've heard that pianos this big aren't always that easy to sell because so few people can take a piano that big.

Maybe I can talk them down to 25 grand... :)

[–]BeowulfShaeffer[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks to both of you that have replied. I was just dorking around not playing anything and played that E/Eb/Db" think just playing around with a descending bass line. I don't remember what key I was in and was wandering between them but I was likely playing in Db (been playing in Db a lot lately). I was hung up on calling the E a "II#" but a " IIIb" is perhaps more right. Modal interchange as suggested by lroberts may make sense as it is a bit if a "funny" sounding cadence, and a bit familiar, like I had heard it in a classic rock song somewhere.

Million dollar medical bills becoming relatively common in America. by mrcloudiesin politics

Even more insidious IMO are the pre-existing conditions bullshit. I would not want to get something like a heart murmur noticed at a young age and then have it used to deny me health insurance later on. It's easy to be put in a spot where you do not want your insurance company to know things like that until it absolutely becomes a problem.

Playing Songs From Guitar Tabs by JJTheJetPlane5657in piano

[–]BeowulfShaeffer 1 point2 points ago

I've played off tabs lots; sometimes its the only thing you can find and it can be a lot faster that trying to suss it out by ear, especially when the harmonies are complex or "weird". For instance I would probably have never figured out the chords in Lyle Lovett's "Her First Mistake" without a tab and I've never seen a standard notation sheet for it.

I find that treating them as lead sheets works best - don't try to literally play each note as indicated if they're playing chords - the voicings on guitar probably have little to do with how you'd want to voice it on piano. Obviously this is not true for melodies, solos, but then you have a whole new class of problems when the guitar starts bending notes and playing harmonics and hammer-ons :)

Newark is a horrible shithole. So is Atlantic City. Camden is an unbelievable shithole. However get away from them and there is some really beautiful country. Princeton is not a shithole. Cape May is not a shithole. Even the country around Somerset is not a shithole; a lot of it is very pleasant, or at least seemed to be when I was working out there.
