Photo of a 10 years old girl using pilows and a racket as protection for a nerf war: "How Rihanna prepares for dates with Chris Brown"[+39] by Tawilin ShitRedditSays

What is wrong with you humourless people? It was a funny joke mocking an abusive guy- not the girl he abused. Get off your high horse of victim hood.

The best photo I've seen of Vancouver so far this year - This is my friend surfing on Third Beach. He doesn't know about Reddit. Let's make him famous. by Babyrollsin vancouver

Wow, so many downvotes for a guy doing what he loves. Typical Vancouver attitude. Let's hope that seen-it-all too cool for school attitude doesn't cost you an olympic gold medal goalie- oh wait it did. I'll be back on r/Edmonton enjoy feeding your own egos by ripping each other to shreds

Muslims of Reddit, how much did your life change after 9/11? by Joseph_fritzl_316in AskReddit

[–]Babyrolls 2 points3 points ago

Drawing a line in the sand and saying "ten times more innocent lives have been lost in the post 9/11 wars than in 9/11" doesn't elicit much sympathy because we've been indoctrinated to see Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, etc as broken places where this happens all the time. 9/11 shattered our national ego, but in the middle east death and dying is status quo.

"I often can't tell the difference between the feminist vitriol and the ignorant sexist vitriol of the 12 year olds whose comments you target for attack" by Babyrollsin ShitRedditSays

[–]Babyrolls[S] -2 points-1 points ago

So am I to understand that this massive subreddit and all the work it takes to post these comments are actually a hamfisted attempt to mock and discredit feminism and feminists? Is that it?

I don't get the reference. Are you trying to be difficult to understand?

I found another old Calvin and Hobbes woodburning that I did! by ItsSoBeautifulin calvinandhobbes

[–]Babyrolls 2 points3 points ago

I think that's enough for me. I added /r/ShitRedditSays because I thought it would be a compilation of some funny and wacky Reddit comments. What I found instead was the humorless dissection of comments that I would normally just dismiss as the you tube crowd getting lost in Reddit again. I stayed on out of curiosity, watching the SRS brigade give rise to the anti-SRS brigade.

It's starting to depress me now that I often can't tell the difference between the reactionary Feminist vitriol and the vitriol of the ignorant sexist 12 year olds I imagine post the majority of the comments that SRS attacks. I just don't see the point. What's the plan guys? Is there a purpose to hijacking potentially interesting threads because of one moronic comment or are you just piling more hate on hate?

In case it matters to you I'm a dude.

What's the best way to shoot a dialogue scene? by natepillingin filmmaking

[–]Babyrolls 0 points1 point ago

Are the actors fairly consistent? Try turning the video channel off and doing a 'radio' edit of the audio track for the wide shot. Once you're satisfied with the pacing then choose your angles according to the rythym you've set in the radio edit.

After that, start from wider shots and work your way in tighter as the scene builds.

Depth of field problems with Cannon 5D Mark 2 by vistascanin cinematography

[–]Babyrolls 1 point2 points ago*

People tend to love fast canon lenses and the 5D for their small depth of field and this very same look.

Some things to consider are:

Are you using a geared focus rig was the camera on a tripod or are you holding the camera by the body and lens? All of these affect how easily and precisely you can control the distance between camera and subject and the focal distance. Try getting a focus puller and setting marks for the actors movement.

What f-stop were you shooting at? A higher f-stop will give you a greater depth of field as I'm sure you're aware. 7Ds have a greater depth of field too.

Have you tried lenses other than Canon which may have greater resistance on the focus ring? Old Nikon lenses are great.

Im a focus puller who works with 5Ds now and then.

I am sorry for this too! Eating vegan is great for some, but not for all bodies. Let's all try to be a little more intellectually honest here.

Starbucks being boycotted for supporting gay marriage. Tell the NOM what you think of their bigoted @DumpStarbucks campaign by tpr007in atheism

[–]Babyrolls 3 points4 points ago

I sent NOM my two cents: (and I'll send Starbucks $1.50 today)

Dear National Organization for Marriage,

You don't like Starbucks extending benefits to the same sex partners of their employees?

Somehow I think you're missing the bigger issue here. We are living through a time when corporations are cutting back on their community responsibility to the welfare of their employees and their families. These cutbacks include reductions to maternity benefits that hurt children. Starbucks has been a great example of a company that takes care of its employees and supports families.

You can't see past that because of your dirty little obsession with same sex couples.

I normally don't go to Starbucks- I make it at home or I go to a local coffee shop (you know, it's better to buy from a guy who's trying to put his kids though college and all that). But because of your insensible boycott, today I will buy a nice tall coffee from a company that, -let's face it- most likely provides better benefits to their employees and their families than the National Organization for Marriage.

Sincerely,

Stephan DuVal Edmonton, AB

Playing this game for a week gave me the most incredibly vivid dreams about being a villager on a chaotic volcanic island. I would gladly pay $7.50 to go back and have a week of those insanely cool dreams.

Does anyone know where I can find a high-resolution version of this picture? I need to throw it in a large format printer and lavishly frame it before the impulsiveness wears off.

How do I get involved in my special interests? by [deleted]in aspergers

[–]Babyrolls 6 points7 points ago*

Why are you being home-schooled? If you want to get involved with your passions a good start is going to school with other people. I think if you do some research, being home-schooled will set you up for a really hard time in your 20s. Tell your parents you want to talk about other options.

Santorum claims that in the Netherlands 50% of all euthanizations are forced and that elderly people flee the country in fear of being euthanized. by Pargelenisin politics

[–]Babyrolls 1 point2 points ago

The issue at hand is that while in most places some faults- such as lying and making sweepingly inaccurate and ignorant statements such as what Santorum did will discredit you in all circles. In America being factually loose only determines what cable channels carry your story. Its possible to be as factually impaired as Bill O'Reilley or Santorum and still be considered to be legitmate in some circles. The hegemony in America is broken. That is what Snor is saying imo.

Coming up Camera or Lighting? by ShooterSmithin cinematography

[–]Babyrolls 0 points1 point ago

I think things work differently in Vancouver than in LA. Im not sure though, I only moved here two years ago and my knowledge of LA is purely anecdotal.

I know that there's more money in LA, more deal brokering and probably lots of smaller funded productions.

I would love for someone who's been working in the Vancouver independent world longer than I have to comment on this.

Coming up Camera or Lighting? by ShooterSmithin cinematography

[–]Babyrolls 0 points1 point ago*

Thanks for the context.

My background is in industrial safety training videos where I learned to always put the subject in the center of the frame, and leave room at the bottom for lower thirds text.

I'm now working as a second AC with the local IATSE chapter (British Columbia). Outside of union shows I shoot commercials and films in the 100-200k range as a 1st AC. I also very occasionally do second unit DP work and web commercials. But I'm not at the point where I would call myself a cinematographer, at least not on a union set.

By the way, how has work been down there the last couple of years now that you're competing with Nevada and Louisiana et al?

Coming up Camera or Lighting? by ShooterSmithin cinematography

[–]Babyrolls 0 points1 point ago*

It goes both ways man. If I'm hiring a guy as a second who is actively looking for (and getting) work as a first then why would he take the pay cut to work for me as a second? He may be the best second I can hire but I can't take it for granted that our interests converge perfectly.

Granted if he's a second who wants to DP but didn't have a good demo reel, naturally you're not going to hire him.

I don't mean to put words in your mouth, but it's hard not to take issue with what seems like a "once a PA always a PA" attitude. I've never worked with anyone at any level who sees themselves as that, but I've met lots of people who see others in that light. It seems odd doesn't it?

Coming up Camera or Lighting? by ShooterSmithin cinematography

[–]Babyrolls 0 points1 point ago*

Sure I would hire him as a first AC, if he's a great second and he doesn't choke on the dial. Most likely he's been volunteering as a first AC on indies and student films already and in the back of my mind I know that because he's talked about all the focus pulling he's been doing on the weekends.

Maybe I don't like my current 1st, or maybe he bought a steadicam and is working as an operator. So I'm hiring Shooter to focus for me now. A few years go by, he gets a chance to OP for me and he gets it because he's been operating his own stuff for years (and lighting, but thats not professionally interesting to me because that doesnt help me as a DP). Then I take a gig as a DP on a low budget. Martin Scorcese calls and he wants me to his movie. I'm dropping the low budget but I don't want to burn that bridge so who do I give them as a DP? Shooters been my guy and he showed me that movie he shot/lit on his iPhone the other day. I pass him off and go to work with Scorcese (or whoever). Now who do you think I'm going to hire to run my second unit?

The point is there is a progression here. I just don't see how anyone is going to hire you as a DOP out of film school and if they do, I don't see how you move up in the world with just your demo reel. You wont get anywhere without developing working relationships with the people who are holding the job you one day want. Unless you are so irresistibly talented that people are banging on your door in which case good on you.
