TROPHY CASE

Arlington, Texas, just paid $30,000 for this logo. Doesn't seem like it was quite worth it.. by sapproin WTF

[–]AtOurGates 0 points1 point ago

But are you a graphic designer who's worked with a committee of idiots as your clients?

Committees are where design goes to die. Imagine your worst client. The most idiotic person you've ever worked with. Now imagine 10 of him in the same room, arguing with you, changing their minds, fighting with each other for control of the project.

The worst designs I've seen have all come out of committees.

Sure, it's possible that this logo came from an incompetent designer, but my money's on the committee doing this to themselves.

Forgive the frankensigns, but has anyone ever been cut off by someone who suddenly realized they weren't staying on the northbound 215 through Riverside? Something this simple could fix that. by spackopotamusin InlandEmpire

I like how they spent approximately 1-gagillion dollars redoing it, so that now all of the intersecting freeways are backed the fuck up for the mile past the intersection instead of the mile before the intersection.

The whole thing is a gigantic clusterfuck. I love describing how to get to the beach from Redlands.

Me: "So - you start out on the 10, then you get on the 91 - well, actually, it's the 215 at first - then it becomes the 91"

Them: "I start on the 215, then get on the 91?"

Me: "No - you get on the 215, then it just sort of becomes the 91."

Them: "Oh - so I don't have to worry about the 215?"

Me: "Well, there's an exit for the 215, but you can just ignore that."

Them: "So - I'll be on the 215, then I'll see an exit for the 215?"

Me: "Yes. You must ignore the exit for the freeway you're already on."

Them: "I'll just stay here."

Your Los Angeles Kings just advanced to the Stanley Cup Final! by arflolin LosAngeles

[–]AtOurGates 0 points1 point ago

The only Kings game (or pro hockey game) I've been to was in a luxury booth. Our company got comped free tickets from a vendor.

Being in a luxury booth is awesome. Trying to watch an actual sporting booth from a luxury booth blows chunks. You can't see shit.

Also, when you're a vegetarian, free unlimited hot-dogs are useless.

tl;dr - Cool story bro.

~4 foot Black snake found on a trail. by Cornskyin MTB

Are there snake seasons? In the last few weeks I've seen more snakes (of the gopher and rattler variety) on the trails down here in SoCal than I've seen the entire preceding year.

What does Reddit want to see out at E3? by JWRentin truegaming

[–]AtOurGates 0 points1 point ago

I haven't seen anything from another manufacturer like the X51 - a small form-factor gaming-specific desktop. If you know of something I'm missing, I'd love to know about it.

You could of course build your own - using a Micro-ATX case and whatnot. But - when you try and cram gaming-components into something that small that's designed to go underneath your TV - airflow and noise become important considerations that require more than the average level of system-building intelligence.

Which is to say, getting an X51 because you want a small gaming PC is quite a bit different than going out and buying "the first cheap PC you see from Walmart or something."

What does Reddit want to see out at E3? by JWRentin truegaming

[–]AtOurGates -2 points-1 points ago

Show me the Valve Hardware Box. If it's not there, ask everyone why the fuck not.

In my perfect world - the Valve Box would be a Valvified version of something like Alienware X51 small-form-factor-desktop. Meaning:

  • Something the size of a game console, designed to fit under your TV
  • Costing ~$600
  • With an upgradable CPU / VideoCard
  • Very quiet operation
  • Low power consumption (so I can leave it always on to do double duty has my HTPC)
  • A "Plays on The Valve Box" style game certification - so that I know if a game will play on my hardware - and PC devs are encouraged to develop towards a more unified spec.

I end up suffering through shitty graphics on the Xbox version of cross-platform games just because I vastly prefer relaxing on the couch to sitting up at a desk playing games.

If anyone can create hardware (or a hardware spec) that combines the advantages of consoles with the advantages of PC gaming, it'd be Valve. And I would buy one immediately.

If E3 comes and goes without any news on this front - I'm afraid I'll have to break down and finally give my money to Dell, which would be a sad thing.

Why we wear helmets by bobbychuckin MTB

[–]AtOurGates 1 point2 points ago

God I love my helmets. It's a shame I always end up killing them.

I went OTB Sunday afternoon, landed mostly on my shoulder but gave my head a good enough smacking to cause bruising on my temple.

That brings my total up to 4 destroyed helmets in my mountain biking career.

Southern California: Where the weather is warm and the mountain biking is year-round. An Album of my local trails by katalyst_in MTB

[–]AtOurGates 0 points1 point ago

I am.

It's a mixed bag West of Jackrabbit. Plenty of fire roads with long frustrating climbs and dead-ends, and a good chance of being run over by a MX rider, but a few hidden seldom-ridden gems as well.

I'd recommend heading down from Razrback to where Richardson dead ends. But not up that way. That's pure suffering.

If you're in SoCal and haven't ridden out here, you really need to. If you're looking to meet up with locals, the Hulda Crooks MTB Facebook group is a great place to start. There's a few regular rides Wednesday afternoons around 6'ish, and it's easy to connect with other riders out on the trail.

There's lots of great trails, and most of them can be put into fun loops:

  • If you're new and on your own - Scott Canyon / The Jedi is a great trail to start out on, and easily connects with most of what's out there. A few of the op's photos come from the last 1/4 of this climb, and this panorama is the view from the top.
  • The Sith Is probably the most technical piece of singletrack out there right now. Lots of exposure, sharp turns and occasionally washed out. You can either get there by following the ridge down from The Jedi, or by climbing Sidewinder and connecting that way.
  • The Jackrabbit is my favorite flowy downhill. It's so damn fun to go down you nearly forget about the few corners that try and kill you. Also, the climb back up is a bit of a killer.
  • Recently, I've been riding up The Jedi, then on the way down climbing up Monkey Puzzle, hitting the Roadrunner out and back half-way up, then climbing the rest of the way up to the ridge and then finishing off with the Razr Ridge singletrack on the way down.

Strava is probably the best place to find new routes out there (short of exploring on your own) - and you can use this tool to export any Strava segments to GPX files.

Hope to see you out there!

Sympathy pregnancy. by nomdewebin funny

Who told women that pregnancy shots are a good idea?!?! I'll tell you who, someone that hates women.

We were at the beach last weekend and an extremely pregnant woman had an hour long photo shoot in front us, wearing a tube top and yoga pants. The mental images still haunt me.

IPhone costs Sprint CEO $3.25 million in pay by KAPT_Kipperin apple

Not to mention that in the last year, Sprint's revenue per subscriber is up $4, a record in the industry.

Sprint's made some bad calls in the past, but they've made some smart moves as well, and I think getting the iPhone was one of those moves. The only tragedy is how long they took to do it.

Mighty 'Mato, the advantages of grafted fruit! See fruit 2-3 times sooner, and longer. by Snufffaluffagussin gardening

[–]AtOurGates 1 point2 points ago

Totally, I didn't mean to accuse you of dishonesty, but when I saw the original photo, I assumed (incorrectly) that it was taken by a home gardener, of their efforts.

Probably worth clarifying for anyone else who made the same assumption.

Mighty 'Mato, the advantages of grafted fruit! See fruit 2-3 times sooner, and longer. by Snufffaluffagussin gardening

[–]AtOurGates 2 points3 points ago

It's worth noting that the linked image isn't a photo taken by the op or another home gardener, but a promotional image taken by the company that produces and sells the "Mighty 'Mato", and used on their packaging and promotional materials.

Also, the "2-3 times sooner and loger" claim is, as far as I can tell, pure marketing hyperbole. The paper that amisamiamiam tracked down experiemented with grafted tomatoes and found no difference in disease resistance, and the grafted tomatoes actually produced lower yields than their non-grafted counterparts.

TL;DR: The title is full of hyperbole, and grafted tomatoes are no guarantee of improved anything.
