It appears that the documentary is a bit disingenuous when it says that his wife left him because of his personality change after the experiment.

His career soon suffered a massive downturn when he was involved in the payola scandal of 1960. Like several other disc jockeys (including Alan Freed) he had been playing particular records in return for gifts from record companies. Indicted only weeks after his stunt, it emerged that he had accepted $36,050 in bribes. Despite his claim that he "never took a dime from anyone", he was found guilty on a charge of commercial bribery, receiving a $500 fine and a six-month suspended sentence.

This as always been a dream lurking in the back of my mind. To make a lens similar to yours that would take 360 degree pictures (while aiming at the ceiling). Then you need a software that will correct the huge distortion and present it in some Google street kind of view.

But to reach that goal you need to calculate the exact precise optimal shape and even then I am not sure if it's even possible.
