TIL there is an ancient temple in Ireland that predates Giza and Stonehenge. During the winter solstice, light penetrates through to the burial tomb for about 19 minutes. by ruperthackedmyphonein todayilearned

Today you learned that there are new people discovering the world every day, and new people joining reddit every day, and not all of them have had the same education as you.

Some of them even come here knowing they don't know everything, hoping to learn new stuff.

You should know there's an entire website, a weekly column and several books devoted to questions like this, written for kids by science writer Kathy Wollard: How Come?

The books have become very popular over the years, so she's effectively reaching kids at their level. She's always looking for new questions.

There has already been a longish discussion of this a while back -- here is a link to that, which has more detail and external links -- including photos of last year's meetup -- in comments.

Good News, Everyone! June 23, 2012 by benjisaucein ColumbusSocial

Hopefully we don't have idiot political messages plastering our beer cups this time.

Way to miss the point. You can count on there being such a message, every year. If it really bothers you, there are plenty of fests where you can see only corporate logos, and lots of them. But ComFest is the people's party with a very definite political purpose, and that beer has generated $80,000 for grants to community organizations in just the last 7 years. So c'mon down, and drink up -- but please, open your mind to the whole experience of Community Festival.

Hey Reddit. I'm writing a non-fiction book loosely about fascinating older people. Do you guys have or know any crazy stories your strange grandparent or older neighbor has told you? I could be interested and might contact you. by PillEnthusiastin AskReddit

Being an author certainly does.

With your communications skill, analytic insight and ability to take criticism, you have a bright future as a customer service rep.

My cat just came home from 2 months in the wilderness. She's really bony and malnourished. What should I feed her to best speed along her recovery? by sushininjain Pets

[–]AngelaMotorman 2 points3 points ago

Simple chicken broth is a good place to start.

Don't give her milk.

If you can get to a pet store or a good grocery store, CatSure is the feline equivalent of liquid food for debilitated adults.

Don't let her eat too much solid food at one time. It may help to fluff canned cat food with a fork, and/or sprinkle crushed dry treats over the top. Choose a mild flavor like chicken or turkey, not tuna, to start.

Keep her warm and talk to her a lot. I'm so glad she came home to you.

Homeless in the college library by bacaorrin Libraries

[–]AngelaMotorman 0 points1 point ago

As a library patron whose asthma that can be triggered by perfume or air "fresheners", I heartily endorse the overwhelming smell standard. And I'd bet dollars to donuts that if this is fairly enforced, some of the individuals being asked to leave will be those who previously complained about the homeless.

One of the worst asthma attacks I ever suffered in public was caused by an impeccably-dressed snob who reeked of expensive perfume but whipped out a can of aerosol deodorizing spray from her purse and saturated the entire waiting area at Lennox Hill Hospital ER because one homeless person came in and sat next to her. I wound up sitting on the sidewalk at 2 am in the rain waiting for the emergency surgery I came for ... so I have an serious attitude problem with people who complain about "smelly" homeless people, even though I'm not one myself.

You've been quite clear what your book is about, and managed to demonstrate how you treat older people very eloquently, right here.

As for idiocy: it's easy to shoot off your mouth when you know you plan to erase your tracks by deleting your past submissions and comments. Way to stand behind your beliefs ...

Why are you treating older people like an alien species? Why not redirect your energy to a critical examination of the social construction of ageism?

How the US Press Lost Its Way by MishMishain TrueReddit

[–]AngelaMotorman 4 points5 points ago

The press should remember that its mission is to be functionally adversarial to government. Being routinely antagonistic is unnnecessary and counterproductive -- although anyone who thinks it isn't occasionally justified hasn't done real reporting.

I don't think Obama is a bad president. by Skullman64in politics

[–]AngelaMotorman 14 points15 points ago

Why do we blame him.

Because there's a whole industry of paid GOP trolls working around the clock to scapegoat him in order to prevent him from winning re-election. He has made mistakes, but the answer to your question is, truly, that shaping public opinion is a job for a lot of people, and right now the Republicans are paying a ton of money to shift blame. The "bad president" label is not a naturally occurring spontaneous idea that popped into a million heads all at the same time with no prompting.

Adding, anytime you catch yourself about to say "we", stop and ask yourself who, exactly, you mean by that.
