TROPHY CASE

A nurse's tender loving care really does ease the pain of a medical procedure, and grandma's cookies really do taste better, if we perceive them to be made with love by alanXin science

Science by definition requires empirical data as a foundation for belief. You've got a confirmation bias.

Death and Cookies

An 87-year old man, on his death bed and in pain, smells the aroma of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies coming from outside his bedroom. He thinks to himself, "my dear wife must be making my favorite cookies as a sentiment to our final hours together." So he musters up what little strength he has remaining in his feeble body and drags himself out of bed.

Fighting off the pain and weakness, he stumbles into the hallway, down the stairs, and to the kitchen door. There, on the table, he sees a huge plate of chocolate chip cookies, the steam rising from the plate, the chocolate chips still soft and gooey. He thinks, "God bless my devoted wife for giving me such pleasure in my final hours on this earth", and he then falls to the floor and crawls towards the cookies.

He gets to the table and, with the last ounce of strength he has left, reaches up with his hand to take a cookie. Just then, he feels the stinging Whack! of a metal spatula against his knuckles.

He looks up to see his wife standing over him, saying "Don't you dare touch those cookies, they're for the funeral guests!"

If eating meat causes decades of life-loss and decline in quality of life lived, why do people continue to eat it?

If your body can survive healthier and live longer on a 100% vegan diet, why doesn't everyone switching over to that diet?

I've had this dream, too.

Just text out or email out to everyone's phone or have them access online websites with encrypted information.

Direct democracy IS viable in today's communication age.

The question is...

Would you allow a true democratic will of the people to be heard?

I heard once that when you're inexperienced and young, you're frustrated by how the world is set up because you think its not what you others what; when you're mature you're scared by the way the world is set up because you know its exactly the way others want. No-one ever went broke underestimating the lowest common denominator of the public's desire.

Is the lack of hair on our bodies for the purpose of keeping us warm a way we physically adapted to our technology i.e. clothes? by Johndoe9990in askscience

Androgens, male hormones, drive secondary sex characteristics such as facial hair. A beard would be a huge sign of biochemical male-hormone saturation and, thus, a good mate. Additionally, longer hair that's not mangy, diseased or thin also is a sign of a healthy diet: thus someone who is a good hunter and provider, another good mate.

Beards and long hair on males are evolutionarily attractive for females.

I noticed you ninja edited the highschool v high school comment. That, plus your attacks on me instead of answering my questions, makes me realize I have more productive things to do.

Best of luck with that guilt complex. Maybe you can drink it away.

You'd be suprised how little people die when they're not actively being shot, bombed or blown apart.

You just did ask for special treatment because of what you experienced, bro.

What makes you think I'm unhappy with my life? Nice attack on the grammar of highschool v. high school. The Wikipedia page redirected me from highschool to high school. I guess you're wrong again.

As for taxes, if the IRS thinks you paid less than you owe, guess what? You pay it. Kinda hard to figure out your withholdings as a teenager on your own. You're wrong again.

I contribute nothing?

Here's an ante in our internet pudding match: I demonstrably saved two lives working as an EMT in the last six months. What have you done to better those around you, Mr. Office drone?

The phrase Reagan popularized during his crusade to cut support to our nation's most vulnerable groups and refunnel that money towards complex, rediculous ways to kill people like the starwars defense initiative?

Or the one that conservatives use as an emotion coded epithet about race on talk radio and tv shows that's bound to get a visceral response?

Because both were based on a fictitious character.

I refuse to lick your boots for the experiences you VOLUNTEERED to undergo. That's on you, friend. You chose it, don't act victimized and like you are entitled to special treatment by society. You hold no special class or power over me and are my equal.

As for your paycheck, I've been funding that with taxes I've paid, not tax refunds but owed taxes, since my first job as a summer lifeguard in highschool and every year since.

You have a misunderstanding of what volunteer means. It use to be military was 3 square meals, sometimes a roof over your head, two uniforms and the chance to kill for your country.

Now vets get healthcare, dental (for life, I might add) 401k, IRA, low interest loans, low insurance rates, GI bill, housing allowance, military brat allowance and cost of living adjustments. There are internet kiosks, Videogame rooms, icecream vending machines, taco bells and KFCs in warzones. The budget for airconditioning, in the cradle of civilization where people have lived since 2000bc without air conditioning, is more than NASA.

In exchange for four to six years you expect civilians to bow down before you as second class citizens because you volunteered to kill. You believe you made you way and are a hero. No, you fed off my tax dollars (Does the militiary still prepare taxes for you guys? Us civilians have to do it ourselves). The single mom struggling on two minimum wage jobs, with neither healthcare nor benefits showered upon you, has more courage than most frontline soldiers. Momentary terror of life is minuscule compared to an eternal low grade existential terror and shame at being unable to feed your kid.

I say it again. Welfare queen.
