A beautify explanation of why I hate karmanaut by the wonderful redditor tremens. by hereiamherein bestof

[–]Alpine_Stranger 0 points1 point ago

The IRC log is definitely most convincing. The modmail thread was more interesting, though. I actually agree with karmanaut's moderating philosophy if it means the IAmA mods don't take a high-visibility role. I'm iffy on the idea of casualiama, though. And the whole hypocrisy thing, but that's mostly just funny.

(Spoilers ALL) Vote On and List All Current ASOIAF Theories by galanixin asoiaf

[–]Alpine_Stranger 2 points3 points ago

That was exactly my point. The books only hinted about Renly and Loras, just like the books only hint at Theon's dismemberment and Gregor's Frankenstein treatment. They all make sense in context, and there isn't a strong argument against any of them. I think they are all things readers might miss noticing, but I don't think any of them are things readers could actively argue against.

I agree that they were pretty well spelled out. I'd put them at about the same level as "Renly was gay".

Yeah, just for fun. Outpacing electrical costs would be nice, but I don't expect that to happen.

I saw similar benchmarks, but I guess I'm confused on what the "min fps" number tells me in practice. The 7870 bottomed out to 0 fps at 2560x1600 in this one, which doesn't sound playable. Then again, I don't really know what the test consists of, so it could be overly conservative. But then from this one, it looks like a 7850 can handle it just fine.

Whose benchmarks should I trust here? 2x7850 might be a decent sweet spot if I could overclock a little, according to bit-tech's numbers. I'd be okay with that.

My laptop already has a 1920x1200 screen. If I went down to 1080 vertical, I might go insane because I love having lots of space for browsing text.

You have good points, though. I would probably even settle for a single large-ish monitor if I could just have a second one in portrait that fits. At that point, they wouldn't even need the same vertical resolution as long as they were the same physical height. That's the practical but boring option.

The only FPS I would be interested in is TF2, probably. I was never interested in the more "serious" games, mostly because I'm terrible at them. TF2 at least looks fun.

I get nervous when I can't see prices, but I'm pretty much sold if you tell me that the equivalent Eizo setup won't be much more expensive than NEC. Similar technology, similar customers. I would be looking at $2300 plus two times $800. So $4000 give or take a few hundred. It looks like I'll have to work some overtime this summer.

Thanks for pointing out RPS. I had heard of it before but didn't know they covered hardware in addition to games.

Thanks for pointing out that motherboard. Expensive, but still cheaper than the 3930K route. I would probably rethink my goals if I found out that I actually needed four GPUs, but I am strongly in favor of fallback plans.

What so-called "bad" movies do you actually like? by Jason72799in AskReddit

Highest-US-grossing feature film of 1996, more than Twister or Mission Impossible. I disagree that people call this a bad movie. It's an awesome movie, and it was successful.

To add to this, site:www.reddit.com/r/ makes sure you only get the English version of reddit and you only get posts in subreddits instead of posts off people's profiles. I still haven't figured out an elegant way to avoid the related pages, but that's a pretty minor annoyance.

(Spoilers ALL) Question about Osha and Rickon by ninjasoin asoiaf

[–]Alpine_Stranger 1 point2 points ago

Not really, because "Spoilers all" is ambiguous. The title in no way suggests that Osha and Rickon are together in later books. "(Spoilers All) Question about Bran and Ned Stark" would make sense if it's speculation about Bran's abilities.

To a reader who doesn't know Ned gets killed, it doesn't spoil anything. To a reader who knows that but doesn't know that Bran finds the Children of the Forest, it could still refer to anything. Maybe a conversation they had in Game of Thrones becomes relevant in a later book.

Professional marketing consultant explains the genius behind bad commercials by professorstylein bestof

I'm torn. I would agree with you, but most marketing seems like it's built on the idea that people are, on average, stupid and gullible. I really can't argue with that.

I can't think of a point of view from which that sentence is not amusing.

Machinists of Reddit, what's the most dangerous thing you've ever witnessed in the shop? by Tunnelofpainin AskReddit

[–]Alpine_Stranger 1 point2 points ago

This was really minor. I took a course with some machining involved.

I left the chuck key in the lathe on accident once, despite obnoxious posters reminding me to take the key out. It hit my thigh about ten thou from my left nut. That was a much better reminder than any poster.

Not necessarily. This setup might beat wheels on carpet. Probably better in terms of longevity, too.

A question about ohm load on an amplifier. by JeebusVsFSMin AskEngineers

[–]Alpine_Stranger 2 points3 points ago

Are you sure the subwoofers require 600 watts? That's almost a horse. Literally, that's 0.8 horsepower. More than most lawnmowers. That will rattle your bones.

I don't know much about AC (or DC if I'm honest), so I can't help on the circuitry front. If you can't give the sub enough juice, the worst that happens is it's not as earth-shaking.

Which calculator should I get? by RamblinReckAEin AskEngineers

[–]Alpine_Stranger 0 points1 point ago

If you're thinking of taking the FE (I took it as an aero-heavy Mech E), the best calculator allowed is this Casio.

It's not a graphing calculator, but it can integrate and do the other fun stuff. The nicest TI you can use on the FE, which I used through middle school, isn't quite as versatile.

The switch is worth the extra effort assuming you have some time before the exam.

If you're not worried about the FE, ignore the above. The TI-89 is very popular, and it's what I used before switching to the Casio scientific, but I really don't think it's that great. Between the new ones, I would lean Casio just for having AAA batteries instead of rechargeable ones because I'm paranoid.

To preach at you a little, being good with Excel and Matlab (or Python, maybe) will be more useful in your career than having a nice calculator.
