its cheaper to pay a funeral than the hospital.

That's an oversimplification since in a civil case you're going to be liable for a heck of a lot more than just the funeral costs in a wrongful death lawsuit. But it's certainly possible for very serious, life-altering injury payouts to be more than what would be expected from wrongful death. citation

Obviously if you accidentally hit someone and then intentionally run them over in a misguided attempt to decrease your liability, and there's enough evidence that it was intentional for you to be prosecuted, then you're in dealing with a whole different situation.

I live in the same area and the last time I called to make an appointment (for an eye infection) they gave me one that was an hour later. It depends a lot on the hospital and on who you're trying to see.

San Francisco's Market Street goes car free, cyclists increase by 53 percent, 78 percent during peak morning hours. by [deleted]in bicycling

As part of a larger plan to overhaul Market Street, private automobiles are currently forced to take right turns at 10th and Sixth streets, a move designed to free up room for public transit vehicles and make the thoroughfare safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

They aren't banned, they're just forced to turn off at certain points.

Not so massive if you're doing something more... interesting.

The evolution of search:

1) 1998: Whenever searching for something specific, put quotes around every phrase that is not meant to be treated individually and put + signs or the word AND in front of everything to make sure you see those results that actually contain ALL of your input.

2) 2002: Wow, this Google thing works really well, you just type in what you want and it returns good results!

3) 2010: Whenever searching for something specific on Google, put quotes around every word or phrase that is not meant to be interpreted as some completely unrelated acronym or synonym, and put + signs or the word AND in front of everything to make sure you see those results that actually contain ALL of your input.

I hate these kind of responses. We all have the ability to read. If someone replies to you and clearly agrees with you, they clearly agree with you. Don't get immediately defensive because someone says something in an aggressive tone. Take the 15 seconds to parse the text and recognize that it obviously wasn't directed at you.

This is why statistics courses need to be required in high school. So you can see through people who try to lie using them. by MoscaGrandein math

Yeah, this has nothing to do with statistics, it's rhetoric. All of the statements he made appear to be true. He cites the facts that support his argument. Anyone who really has a problem with his post should be concerned with teaching individuals how to see through rhetoric and make decisions based on facts plus interpretations from more than one side, not teaching people statistics.

Food blogger reviews Aberdeen Angus Steak House (notoriously shit restaurant in London that survives by scamming tourists). Turns out it was worse than he expected. [cross-posted from main reddit] by fruntin food

Not that it necessarily concerns this place, but one of the things I recall from my visit to London was how stingy people were in online dining reviews. I'd read reviews on user-submitted sites that read "Cheap, great food, good service", and they'd give it 3 out of 5 stars. Or they'd say "wonderful food but the server gave us the check just 15 minutes after serving dessert, so rude" and give it one star. You aren't working for the Michelin Guide, you don't have to be served world-class French cuisine in order to justify giving a nice homey local restaurant a 5 star review.

Jim Stewart, who has made MILLIONS on selling Calculus textbooks, lives in a concert hall called the "Integral House". Another reason to be a mathematician. by NomNomDePlumein math

[–]Aleut 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't underestimate the quality of a textbook until you've had a disastrous course given by someone who decided to use their own notes to teach the class. Don't get me wrong, I had at least one professor who (though we did have a couple texts as a foundation) used his notes as the basis for his course and it worked quite well because they had been fleshed out and refined over his 20+ years as a professor. But I also had a multivariable calculus class taught by a (seemingly very intelligent and passionate) mathematician who had a deep and irrational hatred of James Stewart and his text and therefore eschewed all textbooks and taught off some notes he'd thrown together in LaTeX. I knew several talented and bright individuals who otherwise loved math but came out of that class without the slightest clue what they had learned that semester. I essentially had to relearn some fundamentals of multivariable calculus when I took electrodynamics.

Is becoming a one-car family worth it? by RowanGreyin Frugal

3 miles is super easy on a bike if it isn't too hilly or extremely windy. Heat is a lot easier to deal with than cold or rain, so long as you can manage the sweat (i.e., bring a separate pair of clothes, super nice if you have a shower at work but not a requirement).

My wife and I have one car and one bike and the car hardly gets used by anyone: I take the bike to work, she takes transit (not viable in your area, I know). Not having a car with us at work has never been a problem and we're both over 20 miles from home (no I don't bike 20 miles, I utilize public transit as well). I would say it probably isn't worth it to sell the vehicle just because you aren't going to get a whole helluva lot for a 12 year old car, but if you really are paying >$1600/year on insurance it would definitely be worthwhile to look into just parking it and getting it registered as non-use (if applicable in your state) so you can drop the insurance. Then if it doesn't work out you can always just bring it back into normal status without kicking yourself about now having to find a new car.

Student Loans: Screwing the Upcoming Generation Good and Hard by [deleted]in Economics

You don’t need a fancy five-year degree (and maybe even grad school) that ends up costing you $100,000 in student loans unless there’s real ROI at graduation (law, medicine, nursing …something that pays off and practically guarantees you a job for as long as you want one).
