How work makes me feel. by nomdewebin pics

You're right and I've learned my lesson. This is such a small company (>10 people) that responsibilities aren't clearly defined; I didn't come to my senses until last year, when reminding my boss to meet a county deadline netted me a speech about how everyone "couldn't be on my schedule."

<sigh> I wish I'd read this comment 4 years ago. Now that I've finally put my foot down, the ass I was saving insists I've become completely unreasonable.

Huh, I wonder why Chase Bank decided to rename my checking account... ahhhh thanks guys! by ShadyOperationin WTF

Ask if they still offer "Chase Basic Checking." No direct deposit and no minimum balance (knock wood, looking for a nasty surprise now from the next Chase envelope).

Otherwise I second (third, fourth) the suggestion to switch to ING. I'd have switched by now if my employer didn't love handwriting paper checks at irregular intervals.

Pardon my stupidity, but my homeowner's exemption went from about $900 to about $250. Are they phasing it out? C(r)ook County here. by AmericanGoyBlogin chicago

This is the state's page explaining the Homeowner's Exemption and this is the Assessor's page explaining the expanded 7% exemption, which expires in assessment years 2009, 2010, or 2011 depending on whether you live in Chicago, the North/NW suburbs, or the West/South suburbs.

If your property is located in the city, your expanded exemption expired with the 2009 reassessment.

I don't know anything about those tax relief cards, or whether or how they affect your tax bill. Hope this helped a little.

I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with Microsoft trying to deactivate automatic renewal for xbox live gold because you can't do it online. Fuck Microsoft. by microsoftcaneatmein WTF

Dumb question: A lot of people (here and elsewhere) are saying that deactivating auto renewal kills your whole account. Is that true?

Three years ago, I gave my brother the ill-advised Xmas gift of an XBox Live Gold membership. He buys those cards now, and we'd both like to remove my credit card, but without him losing his gamertag/stats/etc. If you've disabled auto-renewal in the last few months, can you confirm that your account remained active and you kept all that?

(stolen from a friend): Ask the goon point-blank if s/he is a registered sex offender.

Note and memorize name/badge numbers as necessary. Carry a small notebook in your bag so you can write them down as soon as you exit the checkpoint.

Include faces and badge numbers (all public information - no reasonable expectation of privacy in a busy public airport)

I don't have citations handy, but if memory serves TSA consistently weasels out of any kind of oversight, public space notwithstanding, on the grounds that any sort of recording presented the risk of a security breach. Just FYI.

While you're getting groped by the TSA, here's a reminder of how it's done in Israel: High security, little bother by hmemcpyin worldnews

My bag was on the table between us and although they didn't open it, one would reach over and fidget with it while the other watched me intently.

How do they differentiate between agitation due to fear that something will be stolen from your bag and agitation due to fear that something nefarious will be discovered? Whenever I have to send my laptop through airport security I'm anxious as hell.

The music can be hit or miss (for my taste), but Delilah's has a great selection of beer and whiskey and a pretty laid-back vibe.

As a corollary to ww_jeebus_do's comment - this will also give you an idea of the stimulation that brings him to climax (it's easier to observe this in masturbation than intercourse) and you can adjust your fellative technique accordingly.

It's also possible that he's feels self-conscious or guilty about ejaculating into someone's mouth -- a little bit of honest discussion and dirty talk might ameliorate this.

Why are there 1 million 135 buses? by dethkriegin chicago

[–]Alec_Bings 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They seem like a lot now, but I remember a time when the CTA supervisor kept extra buses on standby at Belmont and Lakeshore which went, 95% of the time, to riders who couldn't board previous 135s. More than once the waiting crowd was enough to pack (SRO up to the farebox) a completely empty bus.

The increased frequency has mostly mitigated the overcrowding, but there are still mornings when the 135s are too packed to take on new passengers by the time they hit Belmont. The Financial District really isn't as well-linked to the North (or South) sides as the Michigan and State corridors of the Loop.

The CTA might also just be weighing the amount of congestion more 145/146/144/148 buses would add to Michigan Ave -- the 145/146 run all day, unlike the 134/135/136 buses which only run at rush periods (and in one direction at a time).

I'm considering moving to Chicago after I graduate, questions inside! by ohaithurqtpiin chicago

1) Chicago is incredibly affordable for a big city. It's definitely cheaper than SF (although after comparing notes with my cousin who lives there it's more expensive than TX).

2) Depending on where you are, the answer is mostly yes. Because the city has a lot of distinct (historical and current) ethnic enclaves you sometimes have to schlep for specific stuff (like up to Argyle or down to Chinatown for Asian grocery stores, out to Devon for South Asian, University Village for Italian, etc.) but by and large there will be a reasonable mix of ethnicities, classes, and subcultures wherever you go. Also -- as much as I love small businesses, never underestimate the value of the occasional Target when you're underemployed.

And the bookstores. Oh sweet gods the bookstores. I grew up in an area where your options were one of two chains. There are so many terrific, independently run, new and/or used bookstores out here.

3) Absolutely. I moved here from the NJ suburbs but it became clear while scouting for apartments that car-free life was feasible -- even preferable, if you don't want to spend your winters shoveling out parking spots. (I've heard the South Side is not served as comprehensively by mass transit, but my knowledge is purely anecdotal.)

4) The museums are awesome. In addition to the big ones others have listed, there are cultural museums (like the Mexican Museum, which mounts an annual Dia de los Muertos exhibit) and places with smaller, but more focused collections (like the Oriental Institute at UChicago).

I'm craving a city that has a lot to do.

No one seems to have mentioned the festival scene yet. Every summer the city comes alive with this crazy variety of festivals, most of which have free admission. There are concerts in Millennium Park, rib festivals, beer festivals, SummerDance, craft fairs, art shows, neighborhood fests...you will never lack for cultural experiences.

I'm talking about blowing through a red light without even slowing down (on at least one occasion I've witnessed, this resulted in a near collision with a greenlit cyclist), sometime even after cross traffic has started moving. I can accept complete disregard for the safety of others if it is accompanied by a similar disregard for one's own safety.
