I was just thinking that. I love America. It's hilarious.

Shh! Careful when you say the "s" word! A teenager might hear you!

You see, we'd rather make the entire developing generation completely unaware of the existence of sex until, oh, after they graduate from High School. That's a realistic and clearly superior policy position than this Liberal "education" and "contraceptives" crap.

Assuming we win, which we aren't even close to. The idea that history will go the way we want it to is presumptuous. Let's not celebrate before we win.

This is why, to me, the discussion of "privilege" is next to useless. Your anecdotal example doesn't even provide power as to why privilege is mentioned - there's so much individual variance due to so many factors (geographic location, network, etc.) that it simply lacks any explanatory power to be of any use.

Basically, discussion of privilege brings us to: "Don't judge people without hearing their story." Woo, what a useful fucking epiphany. On the other hand, privilege makes for an excellent weapon to get people who disagree with you to shut up.

"Actually, I think it's bullshit that they make you get an ultrasound before an abortion, but I don't think that constitutes a 'War on Women.' I think a state does have, to an extent, a right to legislate social policy - and they're not denying the ability to choose, just adding an inconvenient step."

"YEAH? WELL, CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE BECAUSE YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW, MAN. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW."

In other words, he sacrificed principle on the altar of pragmatism.

If by "putting the letter 'R' after his name because it gets paid attention to unlike the Libertarian 'L'" constitutes "sacrificing principle," sure. I don't hold him in any lower regard for it, nor do I think anyone should. Obviously there's a percentage of people out there that support his brand of Libertarian conservatism enough to vote for it.

...the fact that he stuck with the GOP through thick and thin makes me wonder exactly which principles he was sticking to.

The ones that led him to vote against the GOP in a number of key GOP votes -- like Iraq, DADT, etc.

A thousand times, this. Whenever a Mac vs. PC debate rears, those defending the Apple side of the aisle will rightfully argue that comparing a MacBook Pro versus an entry-level PC is unfair, due to their specs and high build quality. I agree with that - typically, more costly PC's are built better, use higher quality components, and last longer. Most companies know this, and buy those.

There is virtue in being honest and consistent, especially in the face of much opposition. There is also virtue in changing your mind, which is identical to admitting that you were wrong. How do you do both? I don't know. I don't think anybody does, least of all politicians.

But I think having an honest and good heart helps. I think if you honestly want what's best for folks, you'll find the way. I don't know if Ron Paul has a good heart. I just know that he's got a better one than anyone else I've seen in politics for a long time.

Because the GOP is a worthless, good-for-nothing political movement is precisely why Paul is sticking with it. It's not that he likes it, it's that GOP politicians are the only ones other than Democrats that stand a chance at wielding the reigns of power - and that ought to be terrifying to anyone who isn't or doesn't want to be a brainwashed nationalist religionut.

As one of the two major U.S. parties, they should have a compelling reason to exist. They do not. They offer no new ideas, in fact, they seem to offer old ideas. Terrible old ideas. Ideas that hail from the 1400's, with thousands of idiots begging for them.

I agree, however, I'm going to say this: There isn't a politician in Washington today who "sticks to his or her guns" or who "votes on principle." The Republicans would've just as surely voted for an ARRA-like stimulus program, would've just as surely voted for TARP, and would've just as surely bailed out GM and Chrysler for being as dumb as a bag of shit. They just-so-happened to not be the controlling parties during any of these votes, so they enjoy the political utility of being able to whine to their constituents, "Oh, if only there had been more of us!"

They decry healthcare plans (Obamacare) that are better than the ones they passed (Medicare Part D). They decry wars (Libya) that are better managed than the ones they drunkenly stumbled into (Iraq). Thy are hypocrites of the highest extent.

Except Ron Paul. I'll grant, he seems willing to endorse Federal power if it means preventing abortions, but if that's all you've got on him (along with old, outdated, racist newsletters)... he's still world's better than every other Republican politician by far.

But it's not just a contest of who's less of a total douchebag: Ron Paul doesn't just switch positions when it's politically expedient. He voted against Medicare Part D, and on the same pretenses, he voted against Obamacare. He voted against ARRA, and voted against Bush's stimulus bill (EESA). He voted against TARP. I'm confident that no matter who was in power, he would've voted xactly the same. Except, he also voted for the Defense of Marriage Act... but more recently, also voted for the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell" - a policy which was in-keeping of the spirit of DOMA, and which his Republican constituents supported.

Louisiana is the world's prison capital (Incarceration rate highest in US, triple Iran's, seven times China's. Most prisoners are in privately owned prisons. [–]A_Pickle 0 points1 point ago

While I agree with most of this, I can't help but think that there are still large numbers of people that won't "be safe" after "compassion" and "rehabilitation" and "treatment."

I don't think that non-violent drug offenders or mentally ill persons should even be in prison. That, in my mind, leaves behind a great swath of people (though, admittedly, a small percentage of the incarcerated population) that legitimately did something wrong. Either they stole some awfully valuable property, or they destroyed some significant property, or they harmed some people, or they actually killed some people.

How do you address that? I'm really okay with prisons being nicely furnished, except that free food, free healthcare, free housing for the worst criminals might not be the best way to dissuade people from committing the worst crimes...

Also, Delete Facebook.

I've yet to meet anyone who actually does this. Most people delete their Facebook accounts and come back to me. I tell them, "No, no, no. I need you to delete Facebook. I mean, take this covert ops outfit, steal into Facebook's datacenters in the dead of night, and destroy them with these plastic explosives."

I figure they get something out of my advice, though, because they never, ever call again for relationship advice.
