When the valedictorian at my little brothers grad ended the speech with "YOLO". by Verdaugain funny

When I worked in a store, I heard a mother calling her daughter 'Disney' - this is pretty much the worst I've heard.

There's going to be a lot of disappointed Asian fathers, by the looks of the rest of the crowd.

My physics teacher was a woman and the biggest bad-ass in a pretty tough all-boys school. She was the first in to break up fights and when she came everyone knew it was over. She was also a fucking great teacher - one of the best I had.

Looks at picture of the Mona Lisa. Looks back at the photo of paint on the road. You're buying the line that pouring paint on the road is art? Really?

I agree, of course we do still have engineers and they are achieving amazing things - but it's just a shame that the pool from which we draw them seems to be getting narrower. Lots of people have good ideas, but so many just don't have the skills to make that a reality because they're only taught enough mathematics to understand a budget report or count change in a store.

Yeah, true... but a computer can't do all the work when it comes to innovating new tech.

If you're typing and fast and press send before double-checking it's possible - and with iPhones you can't stop once you've pressed send.

Back in he 1970s, my dad took issue with my primary school (elementary school) in London, and complained that teachers were not correcting my work when I made a spelling error. He was told then that the school was more concerned with me expressing myself first and foremost (I was 6 or 7 at the time). Fortunately, things worked out for me, but I think this attitude sucks. I also feel it's pretty much the default position these days. It's all about 'encouraging' and any kind of criticism is deemed damaging to a child's development, which is utter bullshit.

True, but I have to say, schools are not what they used to be. I look at the mathematics test papers my dad took in the 1950s, and they are ridiculously hard compared to what I was taught in the 1980s. Then I look at what I was taught, compared to today, and I cannot understand how we're ever going to create engineers in the future.

My nieces are seven and ten - they don't have a problem spelling. I think the key is that they also read a fair bit, which leads to self-correction. The youngest blew my mind a bit, though, as she said when she constantly gets a word wrong, she works out a way to remember it - B.E.C.A.U.S.E - Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants - that was one she was taught at school, and now she makes up her own.

Are you smarter than a 5th grader? by noideawhatamdoingin funny

[–]7zark77 1 point2 points ago

I had an Atlas as a kid, which I read obsessively, and could name pretty much every capital city in the world when I was 8. It is surprising how people can't even locate a country on a map, let alone name its capital - and it's not just Americans. The quiz shows in the UK show terrible geographical fails, people thinking 'Miami' is a US state etc.

The thing is, celebrities do this with the premise that it's some sort of 'justice'. Yeah, it sucks that someone calls you names, but man up and brush it off, instead of getting your cyber friends to beat them up. I think it's just further evidence of the very thin-skinned nature of people in the public eye.
