First details on Bungie's new scifi/action shooter 'Destiny' by mthardisonin halo

[–]7heSama 0 points1 point ago

Halo CE was innovative but not really a paradigm shift imho... but, I don't have a lot of experience with old shooters so I can't really say. It just doesn't seem that different.

ps. Activision sucks.

Surreal Gaming: Which games exist that explore the surreal and how do they compare? by eltommonatorin truegaming

[–]7heSama 0 points1 point ago

You are continually missing the point on the distinction of product vs art. A product has flaws due to lack of budget, time and so on.

Art has legitimate choices based on anything and every choice is equally legitimate.

Except for the part where games, while they can be art, are also almost always products (and certainly, Silent Hill 2 was meant to turn a profit) and some design decisions are made not because the developers thought it would have the highest impact on the player, but because they had deadlines to meet, or they wouldn't eat.

Furthermore, "emotional response and thematic/symbolic significance" apply to products, as well. Apple's entire product line is carefully designed to be visually pleasing and unique/fashionable feeling. Is that art? What about logos on cereal boxes and milk cartons? Certainly you can't just slap something together and expect people to want to buy it. What about houses, and cars, and computers? What about the food you buy from a restaurant?

Almost never do you have enough time or budget to make the perfect anything. Choices come down to "what can we cut that will have the least effect on this game?" Anyone who is in game development will tell you that; see Fez for an example of what it takes to do everything you want (and even then, the developer probably has a few regrets).

It means it must be criticized in the same way art is. That is, whether or not it succeeds or fails in its intention. Is the intention of Silent Hill 2 to place the player into a foreboding dream world of horror? Has it succeeded? If so, its technical limits are simply of secondary concern.

If games are art, we need to do away with our obsession with technical prowess (graphics, control schema and so on) and start questioning how these things interact with the player, again not from the standpoint of HCI (as that would simply be another way of techno-obsession) but from the standpoint of emotional response and thematic/symbolic significance.

Well, for WtfWhereAreMyClothes, he was driven away from the game - and thus missed the possible intent of being placed in a foreboding dream world of horror - due to weak controls. Graphics, particularly art direction (of which "photorealistic" is an option), and especially control schemes are a way the developers present their game to the audience, and they can mess it up. It is not an example of techo-obsession to wish for better controls, and frustration is a perfectly valid emotional response.

Ps. Thanks for the two article links, will check them out.

My reaction to #2 of the "three most important things".

EDIT: Obviously there are situations where you should just back down. But I prefer to err on the side of Kamina. Saving yourself money or time is not worth chipping away at your soul.

Anyone else find that 'epic' is a really overdone theme in video games? by dakhoin Games

[–]7heSama 1 point2 points ago

or making everything 'epic' to the point that it's normal, and therefore fails to be epic after all.

Counterpoint: Warhammer 40k. A perfect example of taking everything to 11 done right.

Jesus christ, you lot love your posturing don't you. I'm not even gonna have this talk. Why don't you go have a nice loving talk with your parents about right and wrong.

You would really kill me over that?

A sunny day, a metal ledge can be burning hot

Also friction burn, if you're for instance sliding down a rope... why would you be doing that? Don't know, but I'd be pretty happy if I just suddenly had to rappel several stories down a rope one day. That'd be interesting.

She was pretty good, actually. A bit flowery, but really smooth. Like to see her in a city.

Rocketjumping as a core game mechanic - your thoughts? by nklsrhin gamedev

What do you mean by frictionless floors making it able to move in other directions?

For instance, being able to shoot a wall and getting launched horizontally. More movement options than just up. But I'm just spitballing.

shame there are laws against defending yourself.

Killing someone is not an appropriate reaction to them standing on your car.

Think Master Chief could take Tex?

PS. I love how Tucker takes those hits like a champ in that video.

Okay, if that literally happens, I'm messaging you to figure out what's going on.

I know some people... ;D :P

I hope it has an execution scene where he and an elite get into hand-to-hand combat. After an awesome badass fight, he shoves the barrel of the MA5D into it's mouth and pulls the trigger for a fantastic coup de grâce.

"Were it so easy" much? :o

How do you guys like my new sound? It's a mix of dubstep for the first drop and moombahton for the second. by Fonik_Freakin dubstep

[–]7heSama 3 points4 points ago

I don't really like the drops, but I love the calm parts... if you would make a trance like that it would be fantastic.

Ah, E3. My fingers are crossed.

Start of the Halo presentation

Master chief fighting his way through the Forward Unto Dawn

Reaches an escape pod, plugs Cortana into a holoprojecter

Cortana looks directly at the audience: "Wouldn't you rather take a seat?"

Kick the door; we'll be fine.

I am excited to see the Chief again, though.

[–]7heSama 0 points1 point ago

Make sure there's a liberal application of destruction, otherwise there's no real point to rocket jumping instead of just having a high-powered jump. I would also say that being able to move in other directions, for instance frictionless floors or angling falls off ramps.

Maybe see if you can get in contact with some people who trick jump with explosives (for instance) and see what they would like in a dedicated game?

Ah, OK. I admit I do not like perks, but yeah, I'm willing to give 343 a chance.

Also, I am extremely excited for Spartan Ops and anxiously interested in Campaign.

What's your favorite helmet in Halo: Reach? by Derpface123in halo

[–]7heSama 1 point2 points ago

Gungnir, EOD and Commando is what I've mostly used in Reach. Like the armored bulk on Gungnir, all the little bits on Commando, and the respirators on EOD (be a while before I can get that on Gungnir).

I think we all need to drop the preconceived notions that we have about what the game is going to be like, and just let it all play out. We all love this game or else we wouldn't be on this subreddit.

Well... we love the past Halo games... we wouldn't be here if not for our preconceived notions that Halo 4 will be at least somewhat similar to past Halo games... :/

Why is everyone attacking each other?

Good question!

Oh Halo: CE vehicles. So silly and fun.

map design offered no direction for player objectives,

There were fucking arrows painted on the floor. :I

guns lacked significant impact,

Have you seen H:CE frag explosions?

Plus being able to play four people to an xbox is huge in my book.

Local multiplayer is one thing Halo has always gotten right, and one thing I've always loved. So much.

I agree - being one of Noble Team was more fun than the silent indestructable hero.

Like how every time you played a mission with other members of noble team they stood around uselessly being invincible? :I

As for the characters, they were all fairly meh. Again I just don't think they had enough time for the story. I found Emile and Kat's relationship to be intriguing.

Many elements of the CoD series, such as killstreaks, are becoming staples of Halo 4 multiplayer providing an amazing amount of variety to the current Halo gameplay.

I'm confused. Are you saying you want killstreaks in Halo, or not in Halo so it's different from other shooters? Assuming the first: Killstreaks are in Halo 4?
