Higuain is 22. Not sure if he'd qualify, but if he does, he'd be my hands down favorite as well.

Meet the average American family (this does not look good...) by synthpopin Economics

I don't doubt the facts here so much as I wish there was comparison shown between now and another era or two so we can see how things currently stack up against historical norms. On the face of it, the fact that we don't seem to be saving much for retirement these days may simply be something people have always short-changed themselves on. Plus stuff just costs a lot more today and there's more stuff to pay for (cable tv and cellphones, as simple examples) than in the past. And for several decades now wages haven't kept up with inflation, so the 'average' family is working harder but earns less in buying power. No wonder we don't save for the future.

How do you get over that writer's self-consciousness? by Arkaicin writing

[–]5am 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my early days as a daily newspaper reporter, I used to worry about self-consciousness a lot. But deadlines persisted, the paper had to come out, and no matter what I thought about a piece of writing, there it was for all and sundry to see, day after day. After a while, it dawned on me that people will accept just about anything as long as it is coherent. My self-consciousness soon faded.

What will cause writing to be dismissed instantly (and you along with it) are errors in usage, spelling, and sentence structure. People are picky. So should you be when it comes to writing mechanics. So follow the conventions of proper writing. Then write about what you want to write about. You'll soon find an audience. The size of your audience will depend on the subject, your style, and the format/media you chose to present it in. A good editor also helps, and you can't get edited until and unless you let someone else read and review your work. So write and let others see it. It's as simple as that.

Has anyone read Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon? by mpatel1991in books

[–]5am 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I read the book back in 1979. It was my third attempt. Finally made it through to the end. Two things I remember. It was a slog given that there are so many threads in the plot that it often becomes way, way too complicated and hard to keep straight. Second, I was impressed by Pynchon's depth of knowledge about such a wide range of subjects that ranged from nose reconstruction surgery to German rocket science in World War II. I know some of you may not believe it, but in the 1970's we didn't have the internet and google. So his grasp of so many ideas and developments was impressive. As I read the book, I kept wondering how the heck he seemed to know so much. Ah well. That's about it. I have thought about the book a lot over the intervening 35 years since I first read it. But essentially, I think of Pynchon now as a good, inventive writer, but who engages in way too much mental masturbation for his (or the reader's) own good.

If you're convicted, you'll have to reply yes to "Have you ever been arrested?" perhaps hurting your employment chances. I dunno. Your call. But I think a lot of folks would have simply avoided the cop entirely even with the provocation of the remark to your friend.

Overpopulation in 21st century America--too many people by see0redin overpopulation

[–]5am 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Understood. But the principal reason we don't do better at preventing overpopulation goes back to my first sentence - People inevitably have children for literally billions of reasons and in spite of circumstances to the contrary. I tend to think that's because it's hard-wired into our genes. And what is the purpose of life ultimately other than to create more life.

Overpopulation in 21st century America--too many people by see0redin overpopulation

[–]5am 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People inevitably have children. They will not be denied. Result. More people with the same idea. Ad infinitum. So, unless you're Moses, you're not going to hold back the Red Sea.

And isn't overpopulation something of a self-correcting problem? Once population outstrips earth's resources, people will die in larger and larger numbers until the balance between people and resources is restored. Of course, the restoration process will likely be harsh and brutal on all involved.
