I guess my last question would be if you go into settings in the normal phone you can set up a sip account. Would it be possible just using pbxes.org and google voice to duplicate sipdroid's functionality but through the normal phone?

Never heard of that thanks. Currently he doesn't have a smart phone so one of the reasons for switching would be to avoid the 2gb cap. Figured if we're gonna spend $200ish on a smart phone may spend some more and get away from contracts/verizon.

Unlock your bootloader even if you don't plan on rooting right away. It wipes your phone so its better to do it before you start using it.
