I'm reading Russell's A History of Western Philosophy over the summer. Any pointers or reading guides I should know before tackling it? by This-Is-Not-A-Testin philosophy

Yeah, save your time and don't read it. Read some SEP entries instead.

Walk Like a Man: Men have a lot of freedom, but not when it comes to gender expression by mgwfrin TrueReddit

[–]2bABee 2 points3 points ago

This is why we need Men's Studies, and the associated Men's centers etc. To start to break the mold of stereotypes and male gender expectations and educate people.

We'd all be happier and better off.

Is a 17 inch frame too small? by theBigGloomin MTB

[–]2bABee 2 points3 points ago

Possibly. Really depends on the top tube length. Do you have a long torso/arms? If so then yes, it is too small.

Best place to buy a bike in the Cambridge/Somerville area? by Teregramin bikeboston

[–]2bABee -1 points0 points ago

Bikes not bombs in JP. There is a place in Davis too, I forget what it's called. Quad bikes in Harvard had some good deals too. But none of them will be any cheaper than Broadway. I doubt you'll find a shop that will sell you a $100 bike, because if they did that they'd be selling you a POS bike, and frankly they are all respectable folk who wouldn't fuck you over like that.

100-150 is painfully low, but your best bet is an old 80s/90s road bike off c-list.

You pay for what you get. "Reliable and not break down" bikes are $400+ new to start, but if you want one to commute on then you really should be looking at paying $600+ retail. You should really up your budget to at least $200-300 for something used.

Looks like a sweet deal to me, if the size is right.

The need for polarized is pretty rare I'd say. I'd only get those if I were doing fishing/boating. I didn't think it was worth the extra cost. I use orange lenses, and they do enhance contrast on the trail. These specifically. Cheap and very effective.

I also have another set with swappable lenses, but I haven't seen the need to use grey lenses yet, since I mostly ride in the heavy forest.

Is the cadabra as magical as I want to believe? Or really just a light AM bike?

I am thinking of getting one next year or waiting for the 29/650b version.

Noob question, Listening to music while biking in the city? by last2zeroin bicycling

[–]2bABee -5 points-4 points ago

If you have to ask, you can be pretty sure it's not a good idea.

But you have to ask yourself, is listening to some tunes worth the endangerment of yourself and those around you? Most 20 somethings in Boston seem to think so.

Most good ideas in govt are like this. They are economically feasible, but not politically. ('Cause you know everything the govt does is bad.) This is why I gave up any hope of public service.

Had these at an office party the other day. Told some friends, they had no idea what the hell they were. I thought they were nationally distributed.

what type of bike should a beginner look for? by notaspammer1in MTB

[–]2bABee 2 points3 points ago

Go test ride some bikes. If you want something with good reliability and that doesn't weight a ton you should expect to pay about $1000 retail, give or take.

Yeah, how do you like it? The Shinobi and the Kona Satori are more AM in their geometry (68 HA). These are really more trail bikes it seems to me. Though with 10mm more travel.

Trading bikes in the Boston area by SirBottomtoothin boston

[–]2bABee 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Plenty will take a trade in in good condition. However you won't get very much for them. Better to sell them on c-list at 40% off retail and use the cash to get your MTB.
