The summer of '98 at a Bumbershoot in Seattle which is like huge carnival. There was a free concert being held. It was The Steve Miller Band & Third Eye Blind plus a few other bands I can't remember. Anyhow it obviously drew a various amount of different types of people. You'll get rockers at rock concerts and mostly wiggers at rap concerts ect. So generally you'll know what to expect from the crowd. It took place in a football field with the stage in one end zone. The bleachers were filled up quickly so the rest of the people filed on the field. There were families setting up towels on the field and planning to have their own spot to hang out and watch the concert. This. Did not happen. Most others were sitting indian style on the field waiting. Patiently, until the first band took stage. And when that happened all hell literally broke loose. In one fluid motion the younger and more of the I don't give a shit im here to fuck anyone up in my path individuals rushed the stage. And im not talking a few groups of people. Im talking literally hundreds of people stampeding everyone in their path. It was basically a herd of buffalo with hundreds of chipmunks in their way. They stood no chance. People just got trampled over. Old folks. Children. Everyone. My friends and I were already near the stage so we went with it. Had no other option either way. I have been to more concerts than I can even mention, but one thing is for certain that I've never witnessed a larger or more rowdy moshpit. In that respect I had a blast. It was like nothing id have ever experienced. I fully lost all contact with my friends, they were gone in the sea of bodies. I crowd surfed for the first time and that was intensely fun. When I was basically dropped off the crowd I hit the Astroturf, for just the split second I was down there I seen everything from shoes, purses, clothes and bodies being squashed. I figured at that point I had enough so I made a very slow and strenuous trek out of the massive moshpit. Which wasn't an easy task by any means. It took every ounce of strength I had. When finally I could see the outer tip of the pit of bodies I seen something small and being kicked around by the sway of weight of the mosh sea. I looked harder and realized it was a little boy. He had to have been younger than 10. I made a b-line straight for him. We made eye contact for a split second and I've honestly never seen a more frightened look on anyones face. He knew I was coming to get him and when finally I was close. Mind you im shoving and throwing people out of my way to get there. He looks at me like im a guardian angel and throws his hands straight out towards me. Which was parallel to the ground because he was being tossed around like he was in a human blender. I got to him and threw him over my shoulder. And was basically bulling my way through the crowd like a bowling ball. Yelling at the top of my lungs and stiff arming people out of the way. Eventually when I got to the point of the crowd where people were just huddled up shoulder to shoulder jumping they started to part way to make a path for me. I took the kid to the side of the field where they had gates set up and dumbfounded security guards. I pulled one to me and yelled in his ear that id found this kid being trampled to death and they need to take care of him and find his parents. As im handing the kid to him the boy hugged me tighter than I can express in words. In the short amount of time I seen him while I was handing him to the security guard I noticed how bad off he really was. This kids clothes were ripped and torn. His face looked like he got into a fight with a giant and I could've sworn I seen a bone sticking out of his arm. Not positive about that though. Anyways. Long long story short. If I hadn't grabbed that little guy I don't think he would've lasted much longer in that pit. I think 4 people in total were trampled to death that night.
