do people like getting tipped/paid in food? I gave a 6 inch sub from a local deli to the guy who delivered my bed...

[–]Frost_troller[S] 18 points19 points ago

I do! When friends even now ask me to 'check out their computer' they usually cook or nice dinner at the local TGIF. I don't mind, its friends. Referrals, I try more for money, but if they cant, home made stuff works for me. (Money goes to food anyway...this is more direct)

I wasn't sure what to do so I tipped with real money as well. I wish there was some sort of program I could run that would tell me how much I should tip depending on the service. Like how much do I tip (if at all) when I get take out from a sit down restaurant? I feel guilty but they didn't really do anything. ack!

Piercings: I tip 15/20 percent of the cost of the piercing - the cost of the jewelry

Pizza: I asked a pizza delivery guy and he said $3 standard. Anything less sucks and anything higher rocks.

[–]Frost_troller[S] 3 points4 points ago

That's good to know!

I'm glad tipping is rare here, because I would have no clue how, when, and how much. Restaurants are easy enough, and I did when I got my tattoo, but other than that, never needed to.

[–]Remilla 0 points1 point ago

You tip when you get a tattoo? I had no clue, not that I ever planed on getting one.

[–]blueskinBastard Operator From Pandora 0 points1 point ago

If you're pleased with it then generally yes, especially if it's something large or intricate, also a very good idea if you plan to get more done with that artist/shop.

[–]ThreeHolePunch 0 points1 point ago

I never tip for carryout unless it's a bit of change, maybe a dollar in the cook's tips bucket you sometimes see on the counter.

I get annoyed when expected to work for friends for free, but I've been fine when fixing a friend's computer for some beer before - yes, it's less value than if I was paid, but it's still something rather than work for nothing.

A friend of my wife's fed me supper one time for replacing the CDROM in her computer. Another one fed me for repairing her Floppy drive (SIL unplugged the power to it). Her SIL unplugged it so he could take it home to look at it and they finally caught on every time he wanted to take it home something happened to it.

Food and beer are both excepted forms of currency when helping someone move heavy objects up stairs, so I'd say yes.

I work in Restaurant and Bar point of sale, and food is the best perk of my job. It doesn't always happen, (I'd put it at about 1 time in 15), but it's nice when it does. The interesting part is that I normally get it from the cool customers with easy, 15 minute problems where nothing ever goes wrong. Typically, the overly-demanding, asshole customers with horrible, self-inflicted problems where I spend hours longer on-site than I should shuffle me out the door when I'm done, before I can even order something and pay for it myself.

I do some POS contract work, and one of the companies is a cafeteria for corporations. One time I was at one in the early afternoon, was just about to finish up, the cafeteria just closed a few minutes before, and the guy asks if I want some soup(it was right after a holiday, not many people were working, so they had a very limited lunch selection, pretty much, soup, and pre-packaged food). I say sure, and he brings over a paper bag with a few big containers of this awesome Carrot Ginger soup and gives me the bag(would have been thrown out anyway). It was the best thing ever, I had soup for a week

[–]DKainePortable Sysadmin 1 point2 points ago

Before I worked in the POS Computer industry, I was a car mechanic (and before that I was a machinist/draftsman - i've been around). The shop I worked at was next to a Dunkin Donuts, and we made friends with a woman who was the overnight baker there. One night she was making a batch of pumpkin muffins and had forgotten to put the crystalized sugar topping on them before she baked them. They couldn't be sold, so I wound up going home with a MASSIVE bag of un-topped pumpkin muffins. If you haven't tried one, grab one when they come out again this fall.

I love the pumpkin muffins!

Reminds me of when I had some friends that worked at Dunkin Donuts, I was giving one a ride home from work after some holday(labor day I think), I walk inside, and get tossed a new garbage bag. I look over, and there are about 5 huge cart-rack things of donuts and muffins and bagles and shit like that.

I was like Santa for the next few days, just bringing bags of donuts with me to friends houses and giving them out

Yes!

The best tip I have ever had was two delicious cup cakes and a thank you card.

[–]decemberwolfNow a system designer! 1 point2 points ago

depends on how much food. Generally I appreciate some grub if I have been working hard on an issue for several hours. Or enough money to get myself a takeaway on the way home.

[–]landob 1 point2 points ago

Yes I absolutely LOVE working for old ladies. They are nice as can be and always got something good cooked up.

[–]dwntwnleroybrwn 1 point2 points ago

Most tips you give go toward food anyway it's a nice treat.

[–]lbruiserI'm sorry, are you from the past? 1 point2 points ago

At my office (IT shop) we pay each other in food.

"Dude if you take this out of shop I'll buy your lunch" is a common phrase

[–]HaashWants to come on you, bro. 1 point2 points ago

Here in Australia we basically never tip. I guess it's just our way. Most places don't even have a tip jar...

fresh bacon from a slaughter that morning

Nice story, but bacon doesn't work that way. It has to go through a curing process, which turns it from ordinary pork into mouth watering bacon.

[–]lwsladepowered by coffee 8 points9 points ago

RES tagged you as Bacon Master.

I'm sure this will come back to haunt me with confusion one day.

[–]Shozen05 4 points5 points ago

You know, there's a "link" section under the tag. I always permalink the comment there so I don't run into that confusion.

[–]lwsladepowered by coffee 2 points3 points ago

TIL. Thank you kindly (:

Until it's cured it's just pork belly, not bacon.

whose sole job is to convert gross veggies into delicious bacon

[–]Remilla 1 point2 points ago

For the record you are correct.

[–]Remilla 2 points3 points ago

You can have uncured bacon. Here is a link where you can buy some. I have had it, and I do not like it, but to each their own.

[–]wanderederer1 6 points7 points ago

Mmmmmm, breakfast.

[–]Afro_SamuraiTeenager with A+ who works for half your pay. 1 point2 points ago

Best meal of the day.

[–]wanderederer1 0 points1 point ago

It is if it's done properly. Dry toast and bad coffee is a terrible reality for some though.

[–]I_sleep_on_the_couch 2 points3 points ago

That is really awesome. That is such a great way to get paid (unless rents due.) Cool story thanks for sharing.

[–]IcovadaWannabe IT Guy 2 points3 points ago

Got paid and been given something like 10 kg of the best ever tasting tomatoes for 2 days of work.

In the end, to me, the tomatoes were worth way more than the money I was paid

fresh bacon from a slaughter that morning

...Buuut...bacon takes days to make. Was this just uncured pork belly?

Edit: Sorry for being that guy...

I happen to be one of the few "computer guys" in my hometown, in spite of not even living there anymore. Every time I'm home for the holidays I have a list of people who have been patiently waiting for me to return so I can fix their computers. A couple of repeat customers tend to do things like this, homemade cookies/bread/jam/chocolate. Om nom nom.

Paragraphs, use them.

Started to read... lines starting blurring together... too early... need coffee. Paragraphs would be lovely.

edit - because this is a horrible massive block of text:

While working at a retail store many many years ago (moonlighted as freelance IT person that everyone came to me for all computer issues) I was surprised to have a customer come up to me asking general computer questions while on the store floor fixing one of the fixtures.

Turns out, she was a regular and knew a few of the store employees, and they told her I was their limited tech person. She describes all the symptoms of a corrupted OS and after 10 minutes of talking, I schedule an appointment on one of my off days to drive over to her place and diagnose the computer. It took me 40 min to get out there, and was very rural (cows, chickens, a small garden, orchard, etc) and found the computer.

Checking it out, after 10 min, I realized it may be better to reformat and start clean. Getting permission, and saving all her data to an external zip disk (told you it was a few 'years' ago) I put my copy of Win 98 back on there for them. Luckily, she had her internet software (dial up, very rural location) and she just had to go through the setup again to reconnect. Installed all her apps and drivers via internet and after 5 hours, was back up and running. Everything tested, no real issues came up (couldn't find one driver, but everything else seemed to work). Grateful, I told her i'll see her at work next time.

On my way out, the family brought me a few things at my car: Bag of oranges, fresh bacon from a slaughter that morning, fresh eggs from the chickens, loaf of homemade bread, homemade jam, and jug of milk from the cow. I went home and prior to my work the next morning, had the breakfast of kings! Not bad for 5 hours of work, plus travel. (enough food for the next 2 days)

When I was in college they told me that one of the best perks of working in IT is that grateful clients will pay in food! So far I have collected, and consumed; many doughtnuts, candies, muffins, chocolates, pizza slices, and hot chocolates. I have also put on about 15lbs and need to go to the gym more...
