[–]Englandweakpotatoe 34 points35 points ago

Bastian Schweinsteiger just because if i am going to hear someones name repeatedly as they pass the ball it might as well be the coolest one ive heard.

[–]chaffyballsac 24 points25 points ago

Brilliant goal! Schweinsteiger collects the ball from deep and lays off a cross-field pass to the advancing Schweinsteiger. He nods the ball off to the overlapping full-back - Schweinsteiger - who puts in a low reverse pass for an easy tap-in for Schweinsteiger. He runs off towards the bench to celebrate and gets mobbed by the other 10 Schweinsteigers who'd just finished their cigarette break.

it'd be 90 minutes of passing with no threat of attack, and a goal in extra time.

[–]Siven 3 points4 points ago

90 minutes of passing means the ball never went out, so wouldn't there be no extra time?

[–]EnglandAnnieIWillKnow 3 points4 points ago

Too soon...

[–]ChelseaFirstSwordofBraavos 70 points71 points ago

Yaya Toure, he's a complete player and an absolute force on the pitch.

[–]Englandwillcodejava4crack 29 points30 points ago

Essien (with good knees) is probably up there as well.

[–]ChelseaWarrenKNVB 9 points10 points ago

Essien is unreal. He is so powerful, yet graceful at the same time. Despite being injured for the last 7-8 months, when he came in during the Norwich game last weekend, I felt relieved. I hope he stays healthy.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago*

I love essien but even in his prime he wasn't a goal scorer. Never scored more than 6 goals in a chelsea season. Currently it's gotta be Yaya Toure. Possibly Gerrard but he'd be weak in CB.

[–]Chelseahellier 1 point2 points ago

Rameries. ;-)

[–]Middlesbrougheldenv 2 points3 points ago

came to say this - the man is a monster! Most completed passes in the Prem, top tackler, very strong and quick, and a good finisher!

[–]Arsenalshadereckless 1 point2 points ago

There's a quote from Wenger when he was looking at maybe signing him he didn't know where he'd fit in cause he can just play anywhere

[–]Manchester Citycrocadoc 2 points3 points ago

The complete player. A man mountain with explosive power, quick feet, a great touch, bullet shot, and extraordinary awareness/knowledge of the situation around him.

[–]Chelseadrtacreboog 1 point2 points ago

A real beef castle.

[–]Liverpoolsammo62 70 points71 points ago

Gerrard in his prime. The guy was not only one of the best in the world but has played DM, CM, AM, RM, LM, SS, and RB at some point.

[–]Liverpoolrexis 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget he played CB in a charity match (Zidane vs Ronaldo) around 04/05.

[–]Heart of Midlothianthe39thpotato 56 points57 points ago

Bale can finish and he used to be a defender, albeit an attacking one. Plus he's reasonably big so could stand up to the rigours of defending.

If there's anything that the all-Jonah Lomu team in World Championship Rugby taught me it's that a team full of strength and speed is unbeatable...

[–]lifeunistudent 9 points10 points ago

upvote for Lomu reference. Team Lomu on the PS1 game were unstoppable.

[–]Republic of Irelandpositive_tension 2 points3 points ago

Lomu could hand off entire teams in that game. I would sometimes deliberately allow defenders to come to me just so I could knock them down when I had possession with him.

[–]lifeunistudent 2 points3 points ago

you've no idea how happy finding other Lomu fans has made me today, it's quite sad.

the Rage team was pretty good too, but Lomu was a monster. Geoghan, the Irish winger, was brilliant in that game because Lomu played against him and had a torrid night once. if there had been internet competitions my mate would have been champion, he was absurdly good. even worked out how to cheat his way out of conceding penalties.

[–]Republic of Irelandpositive_tension 1 point2 points ago

I remember Geoghan well, being Irish I exploited the fuck out of how overpowered they made him in it to win the World Cup with Ireland. He was another one with that strange ability to hand off entire teams. Always wondered why he was ridiculously good, thanks for clearing that up.

[–]Manchester Unitedonly1parkjisung 3 points4 points ago

I would definitely agree with this, he has solid defending experience and can attack with the best of them, his finishing and composure have massively improved in the last year or so.

[–]Tottenham Hotspurhardincl2 4 points5 points ago

He actually started as a defender so he definitely has the skill set.

[–]Australiadisco2disco 43 points44 points ago

I've seen John o'Shea play in pretty much every position, including in goal but it's a silly question.

[–]Manchester UnitedzSolaris 26 points27 points ago

He has literally played in every position for Manchester United. Goalkeeper, right back, center back, left back, right wing, center mid, left wing, striker. Every single one. I miss O'Shea.

[–]SunderlandNQsDiscoPants 13 points14 points ago

He's only been with us a few months and has already played about 3 different positions.

[–]Manchester UnitedzSolaris 4 points5 points ago

He is the ultimate utility man. How would you say he's doing for you lot?

[–]SunderlandNQsDiscoPants 3 points4 points ago

I've been impressed with virtually every aspect of his game apart from his passing.

He's solid, brave, got a good footballing brain/positional sense, seems genuinely determined to fight for the cause and is no doubt a great influence in the dressing room, but so far has been totally unable to find a team mate who is less than 5yards away! It's almost comical, in every game I've seen him play so far he has knocked a simple pass into touch at least 3 or 4 times, played hospital passes to team mates or simply lifted balls forward to no one other than the opposition goal keeper. It's weird.

He started at RB, so this was noticeable, but since he has moved to the centre it isn't as much of an issue.

[–]Manchester UnitedzSolaris 9 points10 points ago

That's our O'Shea for you. :D

Just you wait, he'll do something like this for you lot out of the blue.

[–]confusedblues 16 points17 points ago

Not even John O'Shea could believe that John O'Shea just scored that goal.

[–]Republic of Irelandle_squiggle 4 points5 points ago

Love how he was so amazed that he scored that goal. I think he thought he was offside or something or dreaming because he scored such a good goal!

[–]Liverpoolsammo62 10 points11 points ago

the Drogs

[–]ChelseaDrugba 3 points4 points ago

I remember watching a game a while back where we had used all our subs and in the last 102 minutes one of our defenders came off injured. Drogba was forced to play defense and actually did a really good job. It made me respect him that much more.

[–]EnglandAnnieIWillKnow 2 points3 points ago

His defending from set-pieces is invaluable.

[–]Bayern MünchenAwkwardHyperbola 6 points7 points ago

I've heard that Neuer said he reckons he could play as a striker for a third division side or something, so that would be interesting. I have no idea how he'd do in midfield or as a defender, but if he's not scoring, at least there'd be a pretty good keeper back there.

[–]FulhamHlidarendi 19 points20 points ago

Javier Zanetti. Obviously when he was a bit younger.

[–]IFK Göteborgkoagad 10 points11 points ago

[–]Middlesbrougheldenv 1 point2 points ago

I was astounded to see him start in the milan derby last weekend. Firstly that he's still playing regular top level football. And secondly because he didn't look like he struggled at all, and did not look old.

And then Seedorf came on as a sub as well! Those two would have played against eachother in Serie A in 1995!!

[–]Boca JuniorsPaulFirmBreasts 1 point2 points ago

[–]BarcelonaHipgnosis 23 points24 points ago*

I'd say Gerard Piqué. Support in both defense and offense, and a very good height for a keeper.

[–]Manchester UnitedSirRonaldofBurgundy 10 points11 points ago

I would love to see the Pique XI vs. the Zlatan XI. And not just because of their torrid love affair (eat your heart out, Shakira, you'll never replace Zlatan).

[–]Englanddevineman 23 points24 points ago

James Milner has played every outfield position in his career so far.

When he played for Villa, he played CB and marked Drogba out of the game!

[–]sisyphus 15 points16 points ago

A healthy Michael Essien. He's already played midfield and defense for Chelsea, and he's scored some amazing goals that make me think he could acquit himself well up front if asked to as well.

[–]FC Nürnbergkramerica_industries 23 points24 points ago

any Liverpool fan will give you the same answer: a team of Carraghers, a team of Carraghers!

[–]VenezuelaWaffuls 44 points45 points ago

Every game will end 3-3, Carragher to score a double hat trick.

[–]Manchester Citymcityftw 14 points15 points ago

Own goal hat tricks?

[–]ArsenalClaclink 5 points6 points ago

its a rare feat. but it was actually done in 1995 by Stan van den Buys.

[–]WrexhamDyfrig 3 points4 points ago

Lose every game 0-1.

They're not gonna concede many but Carra would score at least one own goal a game.

[–]Liverpoolidlenation 5 points6 points ago

I''m serious when i say this but Heskey he played in numerous position during his career.

[–]LiverpoolGezimd 20 points21 points ago

Probably Gerrard.

[–]smartphoneguy 33 points34 points ago

Wayne Rooney I reckon would be a hard one to beat. He will get goals, loves coming deep for the ball, I've seen him play rubbish but he always works hard and I have it on good authority he is a decent keeper. The number of stupid red cards might hurt the team tho.

Xavi could be another. The other team would never get a touch of the ball. doubt there would be many goals tho.

[–]Barcelonaofacup 15 points16 points ago

with xavi not too much defense either...

[–]Manchester UnitedzSolaris 27 points28 points ago

You'd never get the ball away from him though. Thus, no need for a defense. Possession would be like, 90-10.

[–]Englandnomalas 7 points8 points ago

I wonder...would it even be 90-10? I couldn't see the other team getting the ball but once or twice a half.

[–]Manchester UnitedzSolaris 7 points8 points ago

I was being generous. :P

[–]Englandnomalas 14 points15 points ago

You damn generous Man Utd fans...

[–]Middlesbrougheldenv 4 points5 points ago

you could probably just have 3 of him, running around in a big triangle the whole time.

[–]Arsenalmiya1 3 points4 points ago

The thought of Rooney as a keeper reminded me of this video:

[–]DC Unitedlilpele 1 point2 points ago

Wayne where are ya goin!?

[–]Philadelphia Unionmapguy 4 points5 points ago

Up until this weekend, Wazza didn't have a single card in the BPL this season.

[–]Manchester Citytopright 4 points5 points ago

He's an absolute gent on the pitch.

[–]Philadelphia Unionmapguy 4 points5 points ago

I'm certain he will be wearing a bowtie at Anfield this weekend. Probably share a glass of cognac with Gerrard.

[–]Juventuspaveln[S] 4 points5 points ago

I thought of Rooney too, but as much as he's good at harassing and chasing down players, his tackling is just awful, and as you mentioned red cards would probably be a problem.

Xavi would be a rubbish goalkeeper :)

[–]Englandnomalas 2 points3 points ago

Came here to say Rooney. He's even played keeper.

[–]Italybaboonboy 10 points11 points ago

Van Bommel.... I think the other team would be too scared to get on the pitch..

[–]AjaxGSJacket 15 points16 points ago

Team Van Bommel vs Team Gattuso. I would pay good money for that match.

[–]Italybaboonboy 5 points6 points ago

[–]HollandSchele_Sjakie 4 points5 points ago

Imagine how much yellow cards that team would get. It would be a new world record.

[–]Italybaboonboy 8 points9 points ago

[–]Manchester CityMackinAintEasy 9 points10 points ago

I think a Balotelli 11 vs a Balotelli 11 would be pretty sweet. I can see both Balotelli keepers just not giving a fuck.

[–]EnglandS8G 4 points5 points ago

It would be amusing to see a team a Dirk Kuyt's. Even though they're not technically gifted, they would run around all over the place and make it hell for the opposition.

[–]EnglandBobius 3 points4 points ago

Peter Schmeichel!

[–]WalkingCloud 1 point2 points ago

Absolutely, team of Schmeichels playing Allardyce football couldn't lose.

[–]bottleflick 2 points3 points ago

Wayne Rooney, just as passionate as he is talented. Though wouldn't finish many games with 11

[–]spursmad 12 points13 points ago

Edwin Van Der Sar. It was said he was the best attacker in the dutch squad for some time.

[–]VenezuelaWaffuls 12 points13 points ago

Dani Alves has shown himself to be very capable going forward, moreso in making assists, but he's also capable of finishing decently enough, and is definitely good in defense, as he's gotten the upper hand against Ronaldo multiple times this past year.

[–]ape_ape_ 2 points3 points ago

A team of Drogbas would crush him on corners.

[–]Barcelonancocca 5 points6 points ago

I suppose Maicon would fit the bill as well

For once, you are right. He was the first complete player. A beast up front (best scorer in the Champions Cup until Raul, with 49 goals in 58 games) and very solid at the back. I don't know how he would fair as a goalie, but I doubt that would make a difference.

"Alfredo Di Stéfano was the greatest footballer of all time - far better even than Pelé. He was, simultaneously, the anchor in defence, the playmaker in midfield, and the most dangerous marksman in attack." - Helenio Herrera

Roberto Carlos started as a forward, and was asked to play in the midfield by an early coach(he preferred to play in the back). So really could only see him having difficulties in goalkeeping.

[–]VfB StuttgartGuido_John 3 points4 points ago

Phillipp Lahm would be good everywhere except for in Goal. I like the all Xavi idea too. May be Sergio Ramos? He's pretty athletic and can get forward and work at centerback as well. 11 Messis would be pretty funny.

[–]Newcastle UnitedDragonFilet 3 points4 points ago

FIELD ALL THE DEMBAS!

[–]ArsenalDialSquare 6 points7 points ago

There's no need to over-think it, the correct answer would still be Lionel Messi. The defense wouldn't be that good but it's still 11 (well 10 outfield) Messis for the other team to defend against. Right now no side in the world can seem to defend against just the one.

That said, Robin van Persie is actually a decent enough keeper, for what it's worth, so he could play that position along with the outfield ones fairly well.

[–]Manchester Citybobosuda 1 point2 points ago

Messi isn't nearly versatile enough to fulfill any of the defensive roles. Plus, with his size, he would lose every crucial physical duel as a CB, and the team would have no height whatsoever. I'd probably say Ronaldo is a more complete player than Messi, but both are somewhat lacking defensively.

[–]New York Red BullsAssumer 1 point2 points ago

I've always said a team of 11 Joel Lindperes would go beast mode on anyone.

I would also accept 11 Mike Magees.

[–]Tottenham Hotspurmidnight10 1 point2 points ago

Definitely Mesut Ozil. The man can orchestrate both defense and offense seamlessly.

[–]AnderlechtProim 1 point2 points ago

Vincent Kompany, no doubt.
