Things you learned from watching Star Trek (self.scifi)
submitted 1 year ago by BevansDesign
I'll start us off:
Always have a [Vulcan/Android/Borg/Hologram/Telepath] on your ship, because when everyone else goes crazy, they'll be the ones to save you.
Never have a [Vulcan/Android/Borg/Hologram/Telepath] on your ship, because they go crazy more often than anyone else.
[–]shortyjacobs 64 points65 points66 points 1 year ago
If I ever build a holodeck, it's gonna have a big assed DPST switch on the outside, like this one, through which ALL power to the holodeck will run.
A rotating shift of ensigns that I don't like will have the job of monitoring the switch 24/7. They will be handcuffed to the thing, so even if they are knocked out by some nefarious gas, when they fall they will disconnect it.
None of this "we can't shut it off because the subroutines are off fucking themselves" bullshit. When the Targ manure strikes the main particle impeller, power gets killed.
[–]Chyndonax 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
None of this "we can't shut it off because the subroutines are off fucking themselves" bullshit.
Thankfully I had just finished my glass of milk when reading this, otherwise....
[–]eveisdawning 24 points25 points26 points 1 year ago
What are you, some kind of milk-a-holic?
[–]MankyTed 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
Well if by milk you mean gin and by just finished you mean cracked the cap off my second bottle....
then yes
[–]theshame 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago
Yeah, good plan, until the holodeck simulates the exit and the rest of the ship, including said switch. It will trick you into thinking you've shut it off when you are really just trapped in the holodeck thinking you are living out your normal life.
I guess the ensigns would figure it out eventually, unless someone simultaneously introduced a doppleganger Captain shortyjacobs (I assume that you are the captain in this fantasy).
[–]DrJulianBashir 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
I tried to think of some extremely minor role he could play in his fantasy to make it humourous. I came up with "husband of ship's botanist," but then I realised that would make him Chief O'Brien.
[–]alive1 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
That's the stations botanist. DS9 wasn't a ship.
[–]DrJulianBashir 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Miles and Keiko were on the Enterprise before DS9, where she was a botanist. She never served as the station's botanist on DS9, though she did go on expeditions for the Bajorans.
[–]alive1 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Oh man, thanks for straighting that out for me. I totally forgot that Keiko was on the enterprise. Seems it's time for me to watch TNG again :D
[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago
Will those ensigns be wearing red shirts? If so, I see a flaw in your plan...
[–]illuminachos 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago
if they are chained to the switch, they won't be on the away team.
[–]kha3 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Phasers set to high will disintegrate said ensigns, leaving little to weigh the switch down with.
[–]SubGothius 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Make it a weighted switch that the ensign has to hold up or at least lean against to maintain contact; whether they fall or get vaped, the switch will fall open.
[–]coldacid 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
RAMIREZ HOLD THIS SWITCH!
[–]Veteran4Peace 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I hate when the Targ manure does that.
[–]locriology 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I was thinking more along the lines of, "Just never enter the Holodeck." The things have a terrible track record.
[–]oodja 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Leading, of course, to the Great Holodeck Recall of 2369.
[–]RedDyeNumber4 35 points36 points37 points 1 year ago
The future is so advanced that major technological leaps occur within minutes or hours whenever a previously unsolvable problem arises.
Future engineers may be required to develop cutting edge technological advances while the ship is in imminent danger.
[–]BevansDesign[S] 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
A horrible plague? Oh, I'll just run it through this CureFinder 6000 machine. It should be finished just moments before we all die.
[–]RedDyeNumber4 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago*
"A bizarre space creature has attached itself to the ship? I'll just scan it's genes and recreate its home climate to calm it down."
[–]gcalpo 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
If that doesn't work, I'll alter the power frequency, thus souring the milk.
[–]chriswastaken 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
Leela: It's not working! He's gaining strength from our weapons!
Fry: Like a balloon, and... something bad happens!
[–]baelion 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Yet often are frequently forgotten. Clearly the lack of paper in the future is the problem. Even though a datapad can be dictated to (i think).

And seat belts have been uninvented by the 25th century.
[–]ProfessorLaser 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I always figured that the engineers who designed all the ships were really jealous of the folks who got to actually pilot them, so they installed little explosives in all the consoles.
[–]DrJulianBashir 71 points72 points73 points 1 year ago
TNG actually played a big part in my moral formation as a pre-teen/teenager.

Watching Star Wars and Star Trek as a kid made me want to go into a science profession. So I started off majoring in physics at college. And last August or so, I switched my major to mech/aero engineering. I don't think I've ever admitted this, but the switch to engineering was mainly due to a game called Dead Space, in which the badass main character is an engineer.
[–]Tallon 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Likewise. Diplomacy can resolve nearly any conflict!
[–]pillage 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I was an old-gen fan so I learned that interspecies fucking solves all problems.
[–]Turil 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
And I learned that most species want more than just to be taken care of, they want to be free to explore the universe, too. I.e. zoos are evil, and there are no couch potatoes in space.
[–]aensues 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Always do things for the greater good and take responsibility for all? That's what I seemed to have gotten out of it :)

Always tell your boss that something will take twice as long to do as it'll actually take. That way when you get it done in half the time, he'll think you're a miracle worker.
[–]gabaji123 29 points30 points31 points 1 year ago
This is actually just good life advice.
And I love that episode. Favorite part went something like:
Scotty: "Don't give me any of that crap! Don't you have any real alcohol?"
Data: pulls out a green trapezoidal bottle
Scotty: "What is that?"
Data: Looks at bottle, analyzes, tilts head "It is...It is green"
Scotty: "Well alright, lets have it then!"

When in doubt, eject the warp core.
Reversing the polarity fixes EVERYTHING.
Tachyon particles are gods way of saying fuck you.
Making first contact with a random other species isn't all that its cracked up to be.
There is an inexhaustible quantity of ensigns that you can randomly send to their doom when the situation arise.
Don't trust anything you see in the holodeck.
Extreme communism > anything else.
Nebula's make great hiding places.
Be weary of anything on the other side of a wormhole.
The enterprise has an infinite quantity of radiation emitting equipment for tight situations.
When given the choice, Riker will always chose to get laid
A drug addicted soldier is a good soldier
All other life in the universe looks more or less human
The plasma warp core coolant destroys all living matter and is guarded by a thin piece of glass to be punctured at the right moment.
Data can always be counted on to materialize and save your ass at the last possible moment. Sometimes this means he has to sacrifice himself.
Never, ever, under any circumstances beam aboard another ship alone and unarmed. Come to think of it, just don't beam aboard another ship.
[–]vjmurphy 50 points51 points52 points 1 year ago
And the corollary:
[–]ooitzoo 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago
Untrue. You can always send Ensign Bob to do it manually. Of course, Ensign Bob has to go with it but hey, you have to make compromises.
[–]chokie_roberts 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
Just give him the "needs of the many" speech. Works every time.
[–]lutefisky 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago

IIRC, the two times they actually managed to eject the warp core, the ship was destroyed...
[edit] Whoops - they did it three times, and the last time it worked. But that time it wasn't overloading.
[–]CosmicDaemon 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
They did it quite a few times on Voyager, and I'm only to season 4.
[–]ooitzoo 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
You gotta wonder what can be so bad that the crew of a ship stuck in the middle of no-where 50,000,000 light years from home would get rids of its sole means of making it back.

[–]CosmicDaemon 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Species 8472.
No, they did it quite a few times on TNG and it worked out fine for them.
I think they did it in pretty much all of the movies though. Seems like every time they needed 3-8 minutes of filler they'd come up with a reason to eject the warp core. And yes, that generally did not bode well for the Enterprise.
[–]Fosnez 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Also true in Star Trek Online
[–]Roxinos 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
'Snot true. The various crews encounter tons of life forms that aren't humanoid. Electricity-based aliens, disjointed consciousnesses, aliens based in different dimensions, aliens that live in wormholes, silica-based aliens (whose episode in tNG was entirely devoted to the question of "what is life?"), large monster-like creatures (Species 8472), a black ooze, etc. are all featured in Star Trek.
[–]PSBlake 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
All other life in the universe with which the Federation has ongoing diplomatic relationships looks more or less human.
The corollary to this is that the Federation is extremely anthro-centric.
Hey now, what about the Tholians? There's trade with them and every now and then someone is arsed to mention the Tholian ambassador about this and that.

Whenever your ship encounters any other ship, both will always be rotated right side up, never upside down with respect to each other.
I always liked to think that instead the bridge displays just showed the opposing ships rotated to be conventionally up, and it amused me further to think that Federation intelligence screwed it up and got various ships upside-down or even at angles...

In Starfleet, a large majority of Admirals are either corrupt, lack human compassion or are simply hosts for an invading parasitic slug-like life form. You’ll always do well to have your crew mutiny with you against any of them! The treason charges will likely be dropped when you’re all commended for saving the universe later!
Or changelings. They might be changelings.
Or they might be trying to seize power using changelings as a scapegoat! Huzzah!

He probably has a replicator installed so he ejaculates both chocolate and money.
[–]ryanknapper 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
Maybe hiring a buxom ship's counselor and putting her in skintight cotton wasn't the greatest move.
This is always, always a good idea.
[–]rdchat 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
Hiding the computers doesn't work. If you're a computer, Kirk will find you and get you to self-destruct.
[–]withnailandI 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
In another thread, someone said the inertial dampeners lagged when the ship was struck by something unexpectedly. So in that case seatbelts would be worse for you. If you're thrown out of a seat at 35 Gs, then the dampeners catch up and you land on the floor. If wearing a seatbelt, it would break every bone in your body.
[–]BevansDesign[S] 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Either put adult controls on the holodeck, or don't go in there while someone is busy.
With that in mind, the holodeck must've been programmed to know how to clean up afterwards.
[–]jpdaigle 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
This was only alluded to once on TNG, AFAIK: If anyone needs me, I'll be in holodeck 3!
[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago

Shutting down the warp core NEVER works.
When there is a coolant leak it is time to abandon ship.
Don't shake the warp core, it hates that.
Don't even think about the warp core, it hates that too.
[edit]
Forgot the most important one, electrical safety engineering is a thing of the past.
[–]APeacefulWarrior 32 points33 points34 points 1 year ago
Do not taunt happy fun core.
The Engineering Department would like to remind you that the Warp Core will never threaten to stab you, and in fact, cannot speak.
[–]apollotiger 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
I always suspected that Harry Kim was “accidentally” turning off the inertial dampers every time they took a hit. I mean, seriously, wouldn’t the part of your ship that keeps you from flying around be one of the most important ones?
They're called inertial dampeners, not inertial nullifiers. :)
If they were turned off, everyone would become stains on the back wall when they accelerate. Not that the show stuck to that rule all the time...

All sentient bipeds are actually of the same species and simply of different races. They can eat the same food, breath the same air, and can reproduce. Their offspring are not sterile, which fits the definition of a species.
Pretty much, yeah.

There was an episode of TNG where they discover that humanoid life in the galaxy was the result of a shared, advanced humanoid ancestor race who had intentionally spread their DNA across the galaxy.
[–]Macbeth554 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Most of the things you said about combat have been used at one point or another, like holodecks beings used for training, being used for combat, cloaked torpedos (the cloaking technology was too big to be used on my torpedos), holodecks being used in combat (used in Voyager season two), unmanned ships, etc. Most of these things aren't seen very often, sometimes they offer an explanation, but other reasons being that it simply makes like hard for the writers. (And yes I am such a geek for knowing when such things were used).
[–]doktorbe 23 points24 points25 points 1 year ago

Apparently you can't actually beam anti-matter, so you can't actually beam a photon torpedo. Janeway cheated in that episode.
Ha, I have that episode paused in another window right now. "Dark Frontier", season 5. It's a 2-parter.
Bear in mind that you can't transport anything onto a ship whose shields are up. The only reason why they were able to do it in that episode was because the Borg were remodulating their shields (whatever the hell that means). I'm guessing that the Borg probably adapted to that technique too.
[–]delecti 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
I tend to think of remodulating the shields as similar to degaussing your monitor.

I'll add one: Not only is religion completely unneccessary to live a morally good life, but when it's viewed from an outside perspective, it's downright ludicrous.
[–]Hraes 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, scornful, or something else entirely.
[–]vtdweller 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Serious. I know there are differing views about religion's role in the Star Trek universe, but whenever it was brought up (at least in TNG and VOY), it was always from a stance of "Oh, look how cute these natives are, they think we're gods. How hilarious and archaic!"
I'm not completely sober, but the ones that come immediately to mind are TNG: Justice, TNG: Who Watches the Watchers, TNG: Devil's Due, VOY: Blink of an Eye
It was always like...hey, this primitive society still believes these crazy things so let's pretend like we don't want to interfere but do it anyway. It seemed like only the enlightened societies had done away with religion.

Despite the great age of the universe, all intelligent species currently living are within 100 years of technological parity.
Space ships travel backwards and forwards only - never up or down (unless landing or taking off from a planet). This means that a vast proportion of the galaxy is unexplored by any Trek species.
Some time in the 21st century, cell phone technology was lost. By the time of TOS, it had been partially rediscovered, but not sufficiently to handle video.
Computer monitors suffered a similar fate. By the time TNG rolled around, small flat panels (10 inches, max) had reappeared.
[–]Kronikarz 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
What about all those pre-industrial worlds? Or the ones that just developed warp technology? Or those post-Warp-10, like the Borg? Or the lesser godlike creatures, like the shape-shifters? Or those medium godlike creatures, like the Caretaker? Or the very godlike Prophets? Or the really godlike Q Continuum? Or species 8472? Or... I can't remember any more. There probably were quite a few.
[–]ooitzoo 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Up/Down have no meaning in space. They may very well be traveling "up" relative to earth but it appears as "forward" to the crew.
There are many scenes where surprise attacks happen from "above"
[–]blind_duck 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Wasn't that the Riker maneuver?
edit: Nope...I swear somebody-or-other's maneuver was to attack from above...

The transporter often has powers never seen before nor since. Learned from reading "Memories of the Future" by Wil Wheaton.

Data> Everything and everyone.
Never understood why he care about that human bullshit.
The Lore character made much more sense imo.

The one thing that pisses me off the most about Star Trek is that they are WAY TOO ADVANCED. The one thing that really ruins it for me is the teleporter and replicator. Using these two in combination with all their other technologies, there is so much more they could do with these things.
On top of that what I hate is when they are limiting themselves with technology (ie cloaking device that actually had phasing as well) because of some bullshit treaties they have with their enemies, even when they face adversaries like the borg.
Oh and nobody ever goes crazy and starts killing sabotaging crap for no reason, they've gone crazy or they don't want to go on some mission and would rather go home after being in space for who knows how long.
TL:DR
Starfleet lacks imagination when it comes to the current technologies they have.
They cripple themselves even when facing the worst of the worst.
Nobody truly acts like a real human being. Everybody's good and the bad people in Starfleet are just a smudge below good. (I'm only talking about the shows, not Insurrection or any other movies).

I think I actually learned a lot of my moral compass from Star Trek, and became a more thoughtful, tolerant person.

If you crosslinked a replicator with a transporter, shouldn't you be able to replicate another transporter at the maximum teleport range? Couldn't you then bounce a signal along to do the same thing at maximum teleport range of the second teleporter? And so on, infinitum? Since the replicated transporter is a simpler, repeating pattern, shouldn't you be able to optimize the transporter protocols to make it appear more quickly?
If the holodecks actually use a combination of tractor beams, force fields, and holograms to create seemingly solid matter, couldn't you isolate someone in a holographic cubicle upon them entering the holodeck, then treadmill them around so that the holographic environment seemed bigger than the actual holodeck?
[–]snookums 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
I thought that they did do the second.
[–]gcalpo 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Normal is what everyone else is and you are not.
Going out on your own or with a companion in a shuttlecraft sends an automated subspace signal to all malevolent aliens within a hundred light years saying... 'Nothing to see here folks... carry on.'

Also, shore leave is never relaxing.

it's bad to have redshirts around because that means somebody's gonna get killed.
