Incoming Transfer - Advice/Tips?

Good Lots: Depends where you want to get. S-Lot used to be my preferred one to get to GCCIS, but that may change with all the new construction. Usually was full between 10am and 12pm, though.

Books: My personal experience has been to never buy them until a week into class. More often than not you don't actually need them at all, even when they're marked as required. Buy directly from friends if you can.

Quarter System: We're going to semesters in a few years anyway. Never did them myself, so I couldn't say.

Co-op: Apply to everything and take whatever makes the best offer (in terms of money and otherwise). Also, if you have two good offers, negotiate. 2/3 times so far, I've successfully upped my offers by saying "I'd rather to work for you, but this other company is offering me more money. Increase your offer, or I'll go work for them."

Clubs: Clubs are a good way to meet new people. I've been involved in the Society of Software Engineers and the RIT Debate Society, both of which are pretty cool.

Good places to eat: I've prefer Crossroads, but it's usually just whatever I'm closest to. There's supposed to be some new restaurants in the new construction, iirc.

Other: MacGregors is a bar with a great beer list just down the road from RIT. Beers of the World is probably the best beer store in 100 miles. There are three thrifts stores (Goodwill, Thrifty Shopper, and Amvet) in a plaza just down the road from RIT- great stuff there for dirt cheap. Check RateMyProfessors.com before registering- there are a lot of really good professors and a lot of really crappy ones here.

Business classes take a lot of group work outside class (in my limited experience with them). Buy a suit - you can always tell the business majors because they wear suits all the time.

From what I've heard, semesters are a much slower pace than quarters - week 5 (midterms) comes up so quickly I hardly ever have midterms week 5 - even the teachers arn't ready yet. By then it's week 7 and you only have 2 more weeks to prepare for that final paper thats due days before the final test - it can be brutal if you're not prepared.

The SAU is my place of choice on campus when its open, but Global Village will have several new places, though I doubt they will be high quality, given the rest of the food on campus. There are a TON of restaurants on Jefferson road off campus - DiBellas (subs), Chipotle, Red Robin, Outback, Olive Garden, IHOP, Dennys, Wendys, McDs, Tim Hortons/Coldstone, Subway etc. All have much better food for the amount of money you pay, if you have time to go off campus.

is there a "good" parking lot?

No. Parking is terrible. If you want a decent spot, purchase a reserved pass. At least that way there is a chance you wont be walking a quarter mile+ to your class.

Books: Rent? Buy used online? Trust B&N?

I buy new because I keep all of my books as reference.

Adjusting to quarter system: Am I fucked coming from semesters?

Don't mater. RIT is switching to Semesters in a couple years anyways. They are already making preparations for it.

Co-op advice? Bigger company? Out of town? How to get started?

That is completely up to you. Job market sucks, so take what you can get. Many co-op partners are not taking co-ops for the past couple years due to budget cutbacks.

Any wonderful campus resources worth leveraging?

Yes, your peers. Make friends.

Is there a "good" place to eat on campus?

Ritz is one of the better places. A bit expensive, but at least you are not eating dog food.

"Good" bathrooms?

Depends on your building.

Any bar night specials at that Lovin' Cup joint?

Goto their website. They post all the special deals and special guests on there.

I was a transfer from a small community college, with a 4.0, myself. Just expect to work harder for your grades.
