I'm not ashamed to admit I have some Hall and Oates on my iPod.

Why would you be ashamed of Hall and Oates?

Yeah, but sometimes we do beautiful things with our pack mentality.

Hawaii or the Sexateria in Jerusalem.

Not sure I understand your question. TBH, I just pulled a Bender joke out of Futurama.

[–]avnerd 4 points5 points ago

I had to google Sexateria, I've never watched Futurama, and so I imagined a Sexateria to be much like a cafeteria with sex sold by the variety. And then I wondered what your first selection would be.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmm let me think about this.

[–]ContentWithOurDecay 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At first I was going to say when The Cubs won last in 1908 but it wasnKt played at Wrigley and the game and everything would be a lot different. I'd probably go with when Kerouac was in Chicago in the 40s. Or maybe during the 1968 Democratic National Convention and all the mess that turned out to be.

[–]slapchopsuey 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey ContentWithOurDecay! Do you think it's the Cubs that are cursed, or is it Wrigley Field? Or is it merely a long-running coincidence compounded by a culture of failure and low expectations? Or something else?

Is it possible to undo a curse, and if so, how?

[–]ContentWithOurDecay 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's no curse. The curse didn't come along till 1945, how do you explain the period between 1908 and 1945 then? Some people think it may be that Wrigley Field is supposedly buried on Indian Burial grown but I'm skeptical. I think it's the high amount of day games, and a history of having ownership that just didn't give a fuck.

Thanks for the rhyme, it was sublime.

I saw it a long time ago, like in '04. I don't remember much, I don't even think I finished it so that tells ya right there. I have a burned copy of it, maybe I'll finish it one day. Sadly, I've hated everything else by Johnson.

Though I've only seen the movie, I can see where the book would play into your tastes.

(Sorry for the lateness of my responses. I had to go into the city today and just returned. As it was, I didn't think I was even going to get to pop in and say hello. Hope you had a grand day!)

Do you think Jack Kerouac would have written On the Road without the speed? What do you think of his buddy, Neal Cassidy?

[–]ContentWithOurDecay 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I think a lot of it is alcholol and chemically inspired. But I don't have a problem with that. Some of my best writing has been done on either coffee or beer/wine.

[–]anutensil 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, I've no problem with it either. But I have to wonder if such a book would ever have been written without the chemicals and I don't think we'd have On the Road without them.

I've read several biographies on him and he is really hard to pin down personality wise. That he ended up dead on a railroad track in Mexico didn't seem remarkable as much as a bit mysterious.

[–]ContentWithOurDecay 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never read a biography on him, but I've been very interested in a good one. Which one did you read? I love me some Kerouac. I think i was him in another life.

[–]anutensil 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I went through a stage of trying to read everything I could get my hands on about the beats.

Without a doubt, when it comes to Kerouac and Cassady (I've been misspelling his name), the memoirs written by the women with whom they were involved for years shed the greatest light. Of these, the one written by Carolyn Cassady is the best.

Here's her wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolyn_Cassady

[–]ContentWithOurDecay 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love the beats. I think I was born in the wrong generation, I would have made a fine beat. My writing is even similar to Kerouac.

[–]anutensil 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What do you write about?

[–]ContentWithOurDecay 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Largely my thoughts and my thoughts on my experiences. My writing style has taken on a largely Kerouac style once I began reading him a lot.

My first short story is about sky diving, a mentor relationship and growth. I'll PM you it if you'd like.

My other short story I never finished, is much like Kerouac's Dharma Bums. But instead of hopping freight trains it's about commuter trains and how commuter trains are largely adverse to personal growth and mostly cookie cutter and so impersonal.

edit: I'll give you a portion of my 2nd story: Riding the train into the city, I wish I could deem it hopping and that city was in fact Chicago, while peering out the window I realized a perilous summation of the human condition reconciled only by the momentous decisions one must make in the face of continual adversary. The feelings of fears and failed wants, the latter never coming to fruition while the former never falters, rode within my soul like an unwelcome passenger in a compartment already packed passed capacity.

[–]anutensil 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I look forward to reading a portion of your 2nd story and anything else you think I might find interesting.

What the best word score you ever got on Scrabble?

Have you found a strategy game that compares to the perfection that is Red Alert?

[–]ContentWithOurDecay 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Word score as in one single word? Well, I play by the rule that you can use the special tile slots more than once. So I had placed "bus" on a triple word one game. Came back a turn later to put "drivers" next to it. It crossed two triple word scores, thus multiplying the word three times. Though, I can't remember the exact score ATM.

[–]ContentWithOurDecay 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't seen all of them, most of the ones I've seen have been meh. From what I've seen, the new episodes look barely better than the movies.

[–]LtFrankDrebin 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At least they haven't taken a nose dive like other shows. The Clockwork Origin was way better than the mediocre movies IMO. I think it shows that the writers still have some ideas.

[–]LGBTerrific 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd agree with that. I think they've been getting better as the season moves on, but nothing's been superb or anything. I've been wondering if the disappointment of the new episodes has been due to an increased appreciation of the classic episodes and high expectations for this season, or if they legitimately aren't as good (as in, if I had seen them as if the series had never been canceled, would I feel the same way?).

I would love to have a dog, but I can't afford one at the moment. Not having a Kid thing is great! My previous dog was Lambeau, he died in 07. His name came from the stadium the Green Bay Packers play in.

Jacobs HS and then University of Iowa. Yourself? That'd be odd if we knew each other.

That's my fault - he got one of the "new" format questionnaires several weeks ago. So we'll just have to make it up to him by asking more questions. Btw, it's good to see you PhilxBefore! I hope you're well!

How do you plan to stop the next alien invasion, taking into account the zombies have already attacked and taken most of Europe?

TL;DR: ContentWithOurDecay, September 3

  • Song of the Day: Australia (The Shins)

  • Choosing to go any place in the world, ContentWithOurDecay would go to Hawaii or the Sexeteria (next year) in Jerusalem.

  • Being able to outlaw any facial hair style, ContentWithOurDecay would choose the Rap Industry Standard. If he could sport any style, he'd go with the goatee.

  • Special Scrabble rules: "busdriver" is a word if the other person doesn't catch it; you can use the special tile slots more than once.

  • If able to add words to English, he would choose "popamacorn" and "teefers"

  • Dog names are picked using the stadium names of his favorite teams: Lambeau, Wrigley, Kinnick... but would stop before naming one United Center.

  • Some books (including On the Road) would not have been written without chemical-inspiration of sorts.
