He did a sweet interview yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0fwkv9CNbY

[–]Esoteric_Irishman 63 points64 points ago

It's always nice seeing colbert at an interview with a serious pundit or commentator. Just hearing the most outlandish, satiric critique off the top of his head spoken to an actual pundit who has to act like colbert 100% believes everything he's saying in live interviews is priceless. It's great when Colbert will do an interview with a serious pundit and every time he says something ridiculously conservative instead of facing applause from his in-studio audience, one experiences only the crippling silence of oprah silently nodding her head, which allows you to notice that you almost just choked to death on your burrito because you were laughing so hysterically from the quotes coming out during the interview

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points ago

He did one on Rock Center with Brian Williams tonight.

"And Jiffy Lube"

(did I hear that correctly?)

[–]dissonance07 51 points52 points ago

I'll just leave this here.

Also, to add insult to ludicrousy - blip.tv is financed by Bain Capital. If that means anything to you.

[–]Xisifer 15 points16 points ago

Oh god, he even did the creepy-slow-smile at the end, too! Best ad EVER.

[–][deleted] 784 points785 points ago

We've been called upon people. He specifically pointed out that this is an open primary - you don't have to be registered for a party to vote in it. He says a vote for Herman Cain is a pledge of support for a potential Stephen Colbert campaign. He specifically mentioned reddit in his list of people he called upon, his "good friends at reddit".

We must answer the call. For Truthiness!

[–]bcbrz 574 points575 points ago

FoxNews has been reporting that SC is a Closed Primary - the fact that he clearly clarified that SC is an Open Primary is WAY more important than who he jokingly-or-not endorsed.

I am thrilled to encourage people to get out and vote, regardless of who they vote for. Please people, get your voice out there. Encourage everyone you know to do the same.

[–]hcnye 41 points42 points ago

SC=South Carolina

SC=Stephen Colbert

It all makes sense now

[–]dnalloheoj 31 points32 points ago

Do you have any video or link to them reporting it as such? I'm by no means a Fox News follower, but I do my best to listen to multiple news sources, and haven't heard anything of the sort (From any outlet, for that matter).

[–]acm 70 points71 points ago

Look at that, Phil Musser (the guy saying it's a closed primary), worked on Romney's 2008 presidential compaign.

[–]timmytimtimshabadu 29 points30 points ago

This whole super PAC, corporate media thing is reallly starting to aggravate me. I'm a pretty smart guy, and i'm only just figuring it all out and how corrupt it is.

[–]Neato 6 points7 points ago

Watch Colbert's (and now TDS since he runs it) shows and you get to see firsthand what a SuperPAC is meant to do and what it can do. Colbert is doing all of this strictly to point out the absurdity of Corporations are People and unlimited campaign money.

[–]ricekrispytreat 5 points6 points ago

From a Youtube comment:

HEY , important, Im filling out the form on the FCC in regards to this, but i need the time /date this aired, and who those people are!

Seriously people, do this shit. Why are we letting them get away with it? Could this POSSIBLY get any more obvious? REPORT IT TO THE FCC, ALL OF YOU.

[–]cheebsmagoo 106 points107 points ago

Up vote this guy please. Awareness is Colberts goal and hopefully we can help get the message across.

[–]royalstarfish 66 points67 points ago

I dislike "upvote" being spelled as "up vote" just as much as you dislike the red spell check line under upvote.

[–]Mofeux 77 points78 points ago

Some of us just use autocorrect and don't bother to fix it when it does stuff lunchtime.

[–]appropriate-username 37 points38 points ago

you know you've been completely assimilated into the fold when you add upvote to the dictionary.

[–]MrShow 18 points19 points ago

Shit son. You don't know the half of it. You have no idea what assimilation means until you try typing your friend Dustin's name into your iPhone and "Downvote" appears via autocorrect.

[–]jeffinfremont 93 points94 points ago

Just think if this were to happen in every open primary state, and somehow Herman Cain inadvertently gets the nomination. I'd like to be a fly on the wall when he gets the phone call and is all like "I fucking won what?"

[–]salamanque1 34 points35 points ago

What happened with the sexual harassment charges against him anyway? Did they drop them once he go out of the race?

[–]panda12291 41 points42 points ago

They were old charges that had already been settled out of court. They were only brought up in the campaign to make him look bad, there was no legal action taken against him.

[–]somethinginteresting 13 points14 points ago

Gedefugouddahere!

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points ago

He would be obligated to tell his delegates to throw their vote behind our savior Colbert. Or risk Reddit's wrath.

Looks like there are alot of new users here who don't realize reddit has historically had alot of users who really like the daily show and colbert report, and colbert has mentioned being a redditor before.

Its not the first time he's mentioned reddit, this is from September 7th 2010: http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/daxgp/queue_stephen_colbert_just_mentioned_reddit_spam/ was one of many posts about it. Was mentioned in an interview about how he can go on the site and spend hours on it, in one of his out of character moments. Which is how reddit realized we could "get messages" to Steven if we got it on the front page, which you still see from time to time like why SOPA wasn't being addressed on the shows. Eventually after him first mentioning it, this lead to the posting of the satirical rally idea someone had eventually, to mock the tea party at the time, which got to the front page big time. Then reddit also got someone to ask Stewart about it during the Q&A before the show. Reddit Then Donated $200k to donors choose charity - Colbert is on the board of directors - to convince them (Colbert and Stewart) to do the rally. They already had been throwing the idea around about a rally they claimed although was never mentioned publically, but reddit probably helped give them the ability to do it by showing a huge amount of support for the idea.

And after Donors Choose he did this: http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/e0f4k/stephen_colbert_just_drew_the_reddit_alien_on_the/ A pretty sly shout out by drawing a reddit alien on the back of the blue sheets they have on their desk and coming back from commercial shuffled them to show the reddit alien for a good few seconds.

Finally, 4-5 years ago reddit had full episodes of the daily show and colbert report back when youtube allowed such stuff. Actually since google acquired youtube they were sued and google won(?) or at least proved in their lawsuit that Viacom was uploading some of it to promote the show giving them a huge legal win.

[–]MutatingNeutrinos 410 points411 points ago

It would be hilarious if Cain doesn't realize Colbert was behind his votes, and decides to enter the race again.

Wait....

Omg. Colbert is brilliant.

I've never been more proud of a political advertisement. Wait, this is the only time I've been proud of a political advertisement.

[–]o08 3 points4 points ago

I love that he's using the advice from Frank Luntz for these ads. Just throwing in the word "economy" with no context because it is a main word cloud concern for focus groups is hilarious.

Even the Romney attack ad took ideas for the episode where Colbert tried to spin Corporations are People as a good thing. Regardless of how he phrased the idea, it was received negatively. To put it in an attack ad is too genius.

Herman Cain's campaign was succccccchhhhh a joke, with so many hilarious 'coincidences' (trollface smile/smoking ad, pokemon, simcity, etc) I'm almost entirely ready to believe it was Colbert's Writers/Super PAC behind absolutely everything (Cain's campaign, and Colbert's run) since the start...

Sure, that's some real tinfoil hat type conspiracy shit right there, but either way I agree... Colbert is handling this brilliantly.

I was there at the taping this afternoon! AMA.

I think we all (anonymously) cheered and then looked around, hoping not to make eye contact, lest we need to talk to each other.

He asked after the Cain bit "Why do you think I suggested people vote for Herman Cain?". A few responded "Because we can't vote for you!", "To fuck with people?!?". To which he slyly responded "oh, that's an interesting theory..."

After the bit with the shirts he told us "That's actually happening, we're really doing that, I'm not shitting you"

He mentioned that he has such nervous lawyers, and isn't it exciting when you're worried about getting in trouble? The sound guy poked fun by playing Ben Folds "Stephen's last night in town" during the commercial break.

[–]BettieKills 89 points90 points ago

I think Allison Silverman, the former executive producer, once described Stephen as the only khaki wearing anarchist she knew. The mixture of straight appearance and the subversiveness underneath it is so compelling and why I think taking the satire out of the studio and in to the real world works so well for him. (Maybe not so well for the people being satirized.)

[–]p4nda 10 points11 points ago

"...khaki wearing anarchist..."

Awesomely put.

[–]lonnyk 93 points94 points ago

After the bit with the shirts he told us "That's actually happening, we're really doing that, I'm not shitting you"

Some of us do not have cable. Please elaborate on what this means.

[–]RadioAlarmSaw 165 points166 points ago*

The members of his staff who work for his (now Jon Stewart's) Super PAC work in the same offices as the people who work on his show. They aren't legally allowed to work together or collaborate at all. So to keep things clear he had half of his staff come out in red shirts with "Blue Team" printed on them and half of his staff in blue shirts with "Red Team" printed on them.

I thought it was kind of a throwaway joke but apparently they are really doing some of these crazy things to keep from getting into legal trouble. He also had to be sure to say explicitly that he was only "exploring" the idea of running for president.

The way he said it, it was like he couldn't believe it himself.

[–]SwampySoccerField 8 points9 points ago

It actually makes perfect sense and I figured there was an element of grandstanding done to protect himself from liability. You can expect further things to come from this and ultimately be done for the sake of hilarity based on the underlying premise that they have to openly show a lack of intercommunication.

[–]sepiolida 68 points69 points ago*

He said the exploratory committee and the SuperPAC offices were still in the same building, so to differentiate the two they're called the red team and blue team- red for superPAC and blue for the exploratory committee. The "Red Team" shirts were blue with "Red Team" in green font, and the "Blue Team" had red shirts with yellow font.

[–]KantStopTheRock 42 points43 points ago

In the 2008 South Carolina Republican Primary, John McCain won with 147,733 votes, which was 33% of the vote, and which isn't much less than Mitt Romney is polling right now. Barack Obama won the Democratic primary with 295,214 votes, out of a total Democratic vote of 532,468.

There is a real potential to make serious waves, and if enough Democrats wake up to the fact that it's an open primary, there may be a real potential to, if not win, fill the news coverage with lulz.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

I will literally shit my pants if we can get enough democrats/independents involved to defeat Paul, let alone Romney, in SC.

So many open states would scramble to modify their rules and get them closed tighter than a rich GOP member's wallet when charity comes calling.

It wont happen... then again, if you do your part SC resident reading these words... You could make history!

[–][deleted] 84 points85 points ago

Not Abel.

I'll laugh so hard tomorrow night when they claim there was no coordination here, and point out that he has long supported Herman Cain (evidence on the show), and that this was a logical choice that both Stephen and the Super PAC came to separately.

[–]BillyJackO 55 points56 points ago

Step-by-step South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary voting guide!

You can register by going to your county's voter registration board and filling out an application, downloading the application online and submitting it at the voter registration board, or downloading an application, completing it, scanning and emailing it back to the registration board. A list of voter registration boards by county is available here as well as the finer points of registering. Do note that South Carolina voters must be registered 31 days before voting in any election. So if you are not yet registered it is too late to vote in the upcoming Republican Presidential Primary.

  • Find your ID and polling place

To find your polling place, go to www.SCvotes.org and on the far right, click the second link down that says Check Your Voter Registration. Your polling place is also listed on your physical voter registration card as well, should you know where yours is (I don't). When you arrive at the poll, you will need a valid form of ID. This includes:

    • A valid SC driver's license
    • A SC-DMV issued ID card
    • Your voter's registration card

Note that if you registered by mail, are voting for the first time, and did not submit a copy of an ID with your application, just your voter's registration card will not be sufficient identification.

  • Vote on January 21, 2012

Congratulations! You are now registered and at the poll, ready to pull the lever for truthiness! Step inside and vote for Cain/Colbert.

Do note that voting in the Republican Presidential Primary excludes you from voting in the Democratic Presidential Primary. (source) However, Obama is the only candidate on the SC Democratic Party's ballot for 2012, so this is a non-issue. (source) Happy voting!

Watch the episode here. Segment mentioning reddit starts at 12:21 (updated for 720p version)

For those who may not know, if you have vlc, you can watch the downloading file before it completes by opening it with vlc and clicking "don't repair"

Also, depending on your connection, it may be possible to fast forward to the last downloaded part of the file by clicking to the right on VLC's timeline progress thing, like you normally would with a downloaded file.

Last edit: as pointed out by justicia, it's also possible to stream the file using megavideo here but they may or may not compress the file to stream it.

Morning edit: You have 2 choices: Stream it on Colbert's site (www.colbertnation.com) or click the top link for a 720p (high quality) version of it above ;)

[–]FajitaofTreason 16 points17 points ago

Here it is on the Colbert Report website.

[–]creat0r86 19 points20 points ago

Wow, that is such a cool tip. Thankyou so much.

[–]appropriate-username 39 points40 points ago

No problem. I love VLC because it's like one of the most flexible programs in any category...plays partially downloaded movies, music, partially torrented files, folders of files, zipped files....I usually watch porn by just right clicking my porn folder and clicking add to vlc paylist and clicking on shuffle lol. VLC is awesome.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points ago

No. No it did not.

[–]NCBedell 34 points35 points ago

Are you telling me that the thought of showering with Ron Paul didn't bring up any fond memories of your grandfather?

[–]dangerjoe 20 points21 points ago

Okay, Im from europe.. I don't understand how voting for Cain will help Colbert? Am I missing something? :P

[–]Cornfedhusker 41 points42 points ago

Herman Cain dropped out of the race. However, the South Carolina ballots are "locked in" so Cain was going to be on the ballot anyway. Since Colbert can't get his name on the ballot, he is using Herman Cain's name as his own. Only about 50 people would have voted for Cain so the votes can virtually be counted as Colbert's by the media and the Colbert Campaign.

[–]MeriadocBrandybuck 72 points73 points ago

Basically, Colbert just told all of his supporters to mess with the Republican primary. He pointed out that South Carolina is an open primary--which means that a registered voter just picks what primary-Democrat, Republican, Green, Libertarian--in which to vote and goes to vote. One doesn't have to be a registered member of that party.

So Cain--who is no longer running--is going to have a great number of votes cast for him on Saturday. Colbert will use that as support that there is a great deal of interest for him to run. Taht will be the official line from his show.

However, the real reason is just to mess up the Republicans and to draw attention to the corrupting influence of superpacs and United Citizens ruling.

[–]dangerjoe 10 points11 points ago

Thanks dude, I understand now :)

[–]jamesau 4 points5 points ago

Citizens United

Sorry to nitpick, good explanation though

[–]FearlessFreak 46 points47 points ago

You're not missing anything. We're fucking idiots.

[–]iamtenninja 41 points42 points ago

and the young people of the internet! However, what he doesn't know is that there are dogs amongst us too! And maybe pedophiles

[–]Franholio 22 points23 points ago

On the internet, nobody knows that you're a dog.

[–]douglasr007 15 points16 points ago

[–]zoidberg1339 39 points40 points ago

ALL ABOARD THE HERMAN CAIN TRAIN BABY!

[–]AngelinaTrollee 6 points7 points ago

Steven I....I wanna be more than just friends.

[–]SOLIDninja 5 points6 points ago

Keep in mind that South Carolina has an open primary - meaning that ANYONE can vote for "Herman" including registered Democrats and Independents! LOLOLOLOL!!!!

[–]Benmonkey7 29 points30 points ago

I was not expecting him to mention Reddit.

[–]RedPotato 18 points19 points ago

why not? it gets tons of us to get the word out, and we have a track record of being quite effective.

[–]tayo42 16 points17 points ago*

Genius move by Colbert to run through cain.

[–]Imsickofthinkin 24 points25 points ago

Reddit, Stephen Colbert just mentioned you directly. Go crazy; you earned it.

[–]Ferooo 4 points5 points ago

I absolutely love that the super PAC got John Lithgow to do the narration for the ad attacking Mitt Romney. Who would know serial killers better than Lithgow who was the Trinity Killer! But, honestly I didn't think that add was any worse than some of the "legit" politcal adds from "legit" republican candidates.

I seriously hope the South Carolina redditors do go to the polls and vote for Hermain Cain to show support for Colbert. He does such a great job at showing the absurdity of our election process. I had honestly hoped he would repeat some of the antics from the '08 election, but his super PAC coverage has, I believe, completely gone above and beyond. Stephen if you happen to be reading this, keep the good work and good luck in South Carolina!

[–]uniformchaos 12 points13 points ago

Does anyone have some real ability to help organize this and make sure people get out to vote? I'm not in the state but let's get our shit together and scare the crap out of the republicans. Imagine if this got 15% of the vote.

[–]Uile 18 points19 points ago

I was so happy when he mentioned Reddit, I actually said "I'm going to tell everybody he mentioned Reddit!", but then I realized I don't know anybody IRL that's on Reddit. Forever alone.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

You definitely know people IRL on reddit. Just mention it and they'll pop up.

[–]IDlOT 11 points12 points ago

Gimme a link goddamnit please.

[–]rossmcg 5 points6 points ago

I'd really like to see a how-to guide on what exactly local residents in South Carolina have to do in order to vote in these primaries. Including things like where to vote and how the process works; to make it easy for everyone and anyone to follow through on this call to redditors.

Even if Colberts call was noticeable just slightly it would: A) Force Reddit into the minds of average Americans as a legitimate community worthy of discussing serious political topics (I dont mean to offend anyone by saying this but we seem to hold somewhat of a bad stereotype), and B) Draw even more attention to how screwed up the whole electorial process and GOP is..

Make it happen reddit!

[–]Dan_K 3 points4 points ago

And from the looks of it, pissed off the majority of paultards.

[–]meefjones 7 points8 points ago

I had the weirdest bemused smile on my face

[–]optionalpants 2 points3 points ago

I swear by the mud below my feet, you can't raise a Cain back up when he's in defeat.

[–]bitewhite 2 points3 points ago

Thinking about it... Colbert is a huge fan of reddit so anyone of us could actually be Colbert.

[–]jjdog202 2 points3 points ago

this gave me a raging CLUE

[–]valhallareturners 2 points3 points ago

This is made even better by the fact that "Stephen's" super-pac commercial is narrated by John Lithgow
