While I appreciate the effort to get people to participate, you scared the shit out of me making me think I was missing an election. For all others scratching their heads wondering if they fucked up, wikipedia seems to have a nice run-down of state and federal votes occurring today.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_elections,_2011

It seems my local government, Orange County, FL has nothing up for vote either. If anyone has information to the contrary please feel free to correct me.

Thank you so much. I had the worst time trying to find out if there was anything to vote on. All the voting-centric sites I usually visit had no information, so I was about to assume there was no election.

It seems Wikipedia really does have all the answers.

That is actually an awesome idea. Everyone gets one upvote AND one downvote. Like a simple version of what we tried to get in the UK (ranking of candidates). My bet is the winner would always get "66% like it".

How is this even constitutional to ban the sale of an item on a certain day. The whole concept of blue laws seems unconstitutional to me since they are based on judeo christian values.

In Colorado the biggest opponent to Sunday sales on alcohol was the liquor stores themselves (notably the Korean Liquor Store Owners Association and the larger stores in Denver). We defeated them and now I can go to Church drunk... Just wait until cocaine is legal.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why were liquor stores opposed?

[–]tcostart 35 points36 points ago

Because they liked to have a day off on Sundays while not losing customers due to being unavailable.

If a store can sell alcohol 7 days a week, supermarkets are much more likely to stock liquor, thus cutting into liquor store sales.

[–]idiotbard 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In a lot of states in the south (I know at least NC, SC, GA and pretty sure FL) supermarkets can't sell liquor to begin with. The only way to legally purchase hooch is at state run ABC stores.

I'm sure that competition would be a problem in other states that don't have those laws though.

[–]fearloathingwpb 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here in florida there are lots of supermarkets and even places like walgreens that sell liquor and at much better prices then abc

[–]airmandan 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are correct in that grocery stores can't sell liquor in Florida, but many of them just close off a section of their store so that you have to enter it from a special entrance outside. That makes it a separate store and legal.

Also, ABC in Florida is not state-run; it's a company.

[–]ctjwa 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I dont think this is true. All grocery stores in CT have beer, they just draw the curtain over it on Sundays.

[–]aubgrad11 43 points44 points ago

from the AJC:

"In a year without the White House, governor’s mansion or any statewide offices at stake, Sunday booze and taxes are what’s giving today’s election much of its kick. In 34 metro area cities and Cherokee County voters will pour out in favor or against the retail sale of alcohol on Sundays."

[–]zip_000 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It isn't in every area. It is something that is determined locally now. So some cities (or counties?) will have it and some won't.

I'm in Savannah, and we're voting for it today... it's (sadly) the only thing that I'm interested in on the ballot though.

[–]AmoebaJo 11 points12 points ago

It's so true! You'd better stock up on booze before Sunday hits or you are SOL. And if you are visiting from out of state you might not be aware of that, which usually means the party starts dying down around Sunday. At least in my experience...

What's at stake here? Yoshi break-dance fighting the cast of Final Fantasy, an entire hotel looking down from the balcony and cheering it on and security coming to break it up. The entire hotel, like something out of a movie, was chanting, "YOSHI! YOSHI! YOSHI!" (It... was... awesome!)

Politics is everywhere in our lives - it governs us and creates everything you see. They want to make contraceptives illegal? Are they? But really? Fuck.

[–]marshmallowhug 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That isn't the intention. The intention is only to make abortion illegal. However, the way they are doing this (I believe they define life at conception) may also technically imply that contraception that prevents implantation (such as Plan B, and possibly hormonal contraception) is also murder and therefore illegal. Personally, I believe (hope) that no politician would seriously purse an anti-contraception agenda. In fact, most don't even understand that the proposition would have this effect.

[–]themuffins 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it really is the intention. these people claim to be "pro-life" but when it comes down to it they really want to punish the sluts for the sin of having sex. the HPV vaccine is a similar issue: it prevents cancer for fuck sake but that's really a bad thing because cancer is what those sluts deserve!

Okay, I logged in just to respond to this.. Abortion is pretty controversial, and as a young, sexually-active female, pregnancy scares the hell out of me so I have always supported it.

However, making contraceptives illegal? As in no birth control whatsoever? I wish I had something intellectual to contribute in response to your post, but I am honestly just here to express my confusion and anger, as well as my gratitude I live nowhere near Mississippi.

No child should be raised by parents who are ill-prepared to give them the life they deserve.

[–]Satosky 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is I don't think we can stop it. Many of the churches are urging the members to vote yes and seeing as how so many would kill if their church asked I wouldn't be shocked if it passed. Scares the hell out of me because it is a pretty sneaky attack on our rights.

[–]bmoviescreamqueen 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which is stupid because abortion is still legal FEDERALLY. Why the hell do they give states a choice to go against federal law...?

[–]seltaeb4 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're hoping that someone will file suit against it so they can then counterappeal it all the way up to the Supreme Court, where the fix is in.

[–]Knowltey 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I remember correctly it was Jefferson who allowed states to oppose federal law, however most laws have catches that make it highly undesirable for the state. Example being drinking age of 21. A state can change that to 18 or something if they so desire, but if they do they automatically lose all federal highway and road funding.

I went in and voted today 2 hours after polls opened. I was number 12 on the voting tally. Sometimes I think we deserve to fail as a nation. On the other hand I'm thinking about making a run for city council one of these days also. We only had 2 challengers for 3 spots. Lots of people complaining about the incumbents but we couldn't get 3 new people to run.

Voted this morning in Ohio. Voted no on 2.

Lifelong Republican and I think I am a "conservative", at least financially, but there's no way I can support trying to pin the state's mess on Firefighters and Teachers and Police. I've been told this means I'm "not a republican" by someone I know, and I guess that's OK with me. Strangling our state's education system and punishing our public servants because our governor is trying to score a political victory over unions is not OK with me.

I think I am a "conservative", at least financially

To be honest, how many people would call themselves fiscal liberals? "Oh yeah, I just burn money", the argument I usually see is push and pull of financial efficiency.

For example: I have to pay for healthcare (both directly and indirectly), it's more expensive to do it in the US than in any other country, adopt one of their socially liberal models, in actuality the savings (on various high-expense programs we already pay for) means it's a fiscally conservative policy (outside of just not getting medical care, but you could argue financial trade-offs from not going to work and the like).

[–]tabertoss 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never understood the anti-union plank in the Republican platform. If republicans are pro free market, aren't unions just leveraging the value of their members' skills to get what they want in a free labour market? Union busting laws seem like big-government regulations to me.

Here's Ballotpedia's list of ballot measures being voted on today. You may also have a vote for local positions, mayor, or even governor.

Links and more info: http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Ballot_Measure_Scorecard,_2011#November_8

  • Arkansas Diesel Tax Increase Question (2011)
  • Maine Same Day Registration Veto Referendum
    • This one is confusing. If you like same-day registration, and you'd damn well better like it, then you should vote YES to VETO the law that would BAN it. I think. Some voter suppression genius came up with that one.
  • Maine Redistricting Measure
  • Maine Slot Machine Question
  • Maine Racino Question
  • Mississippi Voter Identification Petition
  • Mississippi Life Begins at the Moment of Fertilization Initiative
  • Mississippi Eminent Domain Amendment
  • New Jersey Sports Betting Amendment
  • Ohio Judicial Office Age Amendment, Issue 1 (2011)
  • Ohio Senate Bill 5 Veto Referendum, Issue 2 (2011)
    • You've probably heard about this one if you're in Ohio. This one's the opposite of the Maine veto: you vote YES to support the Senate bill that removes collective bargaining rights, and you vote NO to veto it. YES means you support keeping the law Ohio passed in place, NO means you support collective bargaining.
  • Ohio Health Care Amendment, Issue 3 (2011)
  • Texas Survivor of Veterans Homestead Tax Amendment, Proposition 1 (2011)
  • Texas Water Development Bonds Amendment, Proposition 2 (2011)
  • Texas Education Loans Finance Amendment, Proposition 3 (2011)
  • Texas County Redevelopment Bond Amendment, Proposition 4 (2011)
  • Texas Interlocal Contracts Amendment, Proposition 5 (2011)
  • Texas Permanent School Fund Amendment, Proposition 6 (2011)
  • El Paso County, Texas Parks and Recreational Provision Amendment, Proposition 7 (2011)
  • Texas Water-Stewardship Tax Amendment, Proposition 8 (2011)
  • Texas Governor's Pardon Amendment, Proposition 9 (2011)
  • Texas Automatic Resignation Term Length Amendment, Proposition 10 (2011)
  • Washington Voter Residency Requirement Amendment, SJR 8205 (2011)
  • Washington Budget Stabilization Account Amendment, SJR 8206 (2011)
  • Washington Transportation, Initiative 1125 (2011)
  • Washington Liquor State Licensing, Initiative 1183 (2011)
  • Washington Long-Term Care, Initiative 1163 (2011)

...plus local measures in some places in Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin. http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/2011_ballot_measures#Local_measures

One of my favorite bits from the West Wing - President Bartlett has his own exit pollers in the field keeping tabs on the Board of Ed race in his home town, because he hates one of the guys running so much.

He says it's because ALL of the governing that really mattters is done at the local level. While all the rhetoric and political posturing is done nationally on a grand stage, it's the Boards of Ed and Town Councils that affect us the most. I always agreed with it, and it was funny hearing it coming from a (fake) president.

[–]cmdaniels 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a big movement in my home town for write-ins for school board. Our current school board is brainless so I'm traveling a pretty substantial distance (about 30 miles each way) to get out there to vote today. Maybe you did miss something, you just don't know about it.

[–]chkltcow 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I tried to vote today but was told to go home as well. I live outside the city limits, and the only elections are municipal. Since I don't pay taxes in the town I live nearest, I don't get to tell the fundamentalists to shove their prohibition right up their arse so I can buy groceries locally instead of 20 miles away where they have beer.

If you live in Virginia, find out which candidate will continue to oppose uranium mining. There is a serious danger of uranium mining getting the go-ahead, as well as fracking in GW Forest, if Republicans control the state senate.

[–]sweetcommunist 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If Republicans gain control of the Senate, they'll introduce personhood measures like in Mississippi and outlaw abortion. Most of our clinics will already be shut down, thanks to the new regulations that require them to meet hospital standards, despite being outpatient care centers. Fuck Virginia Republicans and everything they stand for.

Unfortunately, my asshole Republican Senator and Representative are running unopposed, so I wrote in other people's names, instead.

WHAT IF SOMEONE DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGY THAT ALLOWED PEOPLE TO VOTE FROM THEIR HOMES, ONLINE. I would do it. Any one have websites/info about how to find out where to vote??

[–]Rielos 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I read that Oregon is actually voting on whether to allow iPad voting for elderly folks!

It's sad that this is not a technology issue so much as a political and states-rights issue. Heaven forbid we have instant, accurate, hassle-free election results!

[–]huxtiblejones 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That seems even more unreliable than a polling place. A better solution would be election holidays.

[–]mja666 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except it would suffer from the same problem as electronic voting machines, it would be unverifiable, allowing unscrupulous people to hijack your democracy.

[–]cos1ne 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a solution for this in that during the election people were given randomized ID cards (a strip of paper with a sequence of numbers on it for clarity as well as a password) with their ballot, then in scantron style they would fill in bubbles that matched their ID card. Once the votes were tabulated it would immediately go online, and you could view your ballot and see whether there were any errors or impropriety. If there were you'd hit a "report" button and type in the (given) password. If enough "reports" were made, then there would another election (and an investigation).

It doesn't matter if people can view random ballots (typing in random numbers to view ballots not their own) because there is no identifying information on them and ballots IIRC are public record and can be viewed by anyone if they so desire. Likewise the password is put in there to prevent anyone from "reporting" when it's not their ballot.

Do I have to register or something?

How do I adult

[–]avfc41 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless you're in a lucky handful of states, if you're not registered by now, you can't vote. Election-day registration should get a lot more attention, since it's one of the few reforms proven to boost turnout (early voting is a mixed bag at best in this regard).

[–]commercialproduct 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

quick rant and question:

now, i know that turnout rates for elections are pretty terrible. on off-year elections like this one, you could very well see turnouts smaller than 10% of the registered voters in certain voting districts. the best turnout is seen during presidential elections, but even then turnout is maybe 50%.

so, why do not more people vote? why do more people not exercise their right of franchise, a right so many populations throughout history struggled dearly for?

voters may have the attitude that they're better off not voting than voting without full knowledge of the issues/candidates. this is not a good excuse because, if you're reading this right now, you know about the internet and how it can be used as a resource of information. just do a google search or two.

the bigger issue is that election day is on tuesday, a regular workday for most. many people simply don't have the time to vote on a regular workday. for example, my mother, a nurse, works 12 hour shifts. accounting for time to commute back and fourth from her hospital, she leaves home at 6 am and returns around 8 or 9. that leaves her little time to catch the polls, let alone research and inform herself of the candidates/issues. keep in mind, most people who must work hours that keep them from voting are generally younger low and middle class individuals.

so, what would be a remedy to the problem of low voter turnout? why not make election day a federal holiday? having an off day from work solves the issue of time for working voters. that's resolving one of the biggest obstacles to people being able to get out and vote.

my question is this: why is election day not a federal holiday? can anyone give me a good reason why?

[–]ladyvonkulp 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A big part of increasing participation would be making it easier for college students who are out of their districts to vote. This is often a touchy subject for the GOP because chances are most of this demographic would vote for Democrats.

[–]skankingmike 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Personal freedom and most companies wouldn't observe the holiday anyway. Aka best buy would have a "federal holiday sale!" they'd probably make fucking car deals that day.

Welcome to America, were we love a good car deal on our national holidays.

[–]ElephantRider 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe that it's already federal law that employers must give time off for employees to vote during the workday if they can't get to the polls otherwise. A federal holiday wouldn't do anything since the jobs you're talking about usually don't get those holidays off anyway and they would be even more busy from all the people that did get it off.

*OK, there's no federal law but most states have some allowance for people to get to the polls during work hours, or some other absentee system.

On even numbered years, there's a long line out of the voting room, and every 4 years there's a long line around the corner. Today I walked in at 8:10, walked out at 8:12, no line at all. Meanwhile local government has quite an impact on your day to day life . . .

[–]butlertd 3 points4 points ago*

Purely hypothetical question:

For local positions where you can vote for multiple people for a position with multiple seats (city council), what is likely to happen if I use misspellings to vote for the same candidate many times?

Example:

  • Bart Simpson
  • Bartholomew Simpson
  • Bart Simpsson
  • Bart Simpsonn
  • Bartt Simpson

Would misspelling invalidate an otherwise legitimate vote? Would those votes be invalidated? For the case of the above, it seems feasible that the real Bart Simpson could end up with zero, one, or five votes on my behalf (depending on software and procedures and crap). Which do we suppose would actually happen?
