This might be a long shot, but I've decided to at least express my interest in taking up this position. During the few months that I have been a member here, I have endeavored to make as big of a contribution as I can. In the last few weeks I have put my designing skills to good use, and my logo's so far are being used on /r/WorldNews, /r/Pics, /r/Gaming, /r/Politics, /r/Games, /r/Zoidberg, /r/AskSocialScience, /r/Windows, and two of my logos have been on the front page. I hope that this stands as a testament to the amount of time that I am willing and able to give to being an active and fair moderator. Despite not currently being a moderator of a Subreddit (apart from /r/Trending and /r/Spacepicks which I am working on), I have drawn my experience of managing communities from when I programmed, designed and ran a Zombie Apocalypse game which grew to over 100,000 registered players in a few months. This task involved coordinating a small army of moderators whilst maintaining the forum and script during the exponential growth we saw. Thanks!

[–]Skuld/r/melodicmetal 10 points11 points ago

Not being a moderator of a default reddit. (prefer to give an opportunity to a moderator of a smaller reddit).

You're doing the right thing here, kudos.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago*

Yeah seriously, I'm glad that they're offering it to people who mod smaller subreddits. The bigger mods are good and all but there are some great mods who never get a chance to do anything just because they happen to mod a smaller subreddit.

[–]Maxion/r/Photography 2 points3 points ago

I'm a moderator over at /r/photography/ and would like to have the opportunity to try out moderating a large reddit.

I work from home so I've got plenty of time to go through the modmail and the spam filter. I usually also do this from my phone on the metro or waiting at clients.

I'm from Finland so I cover the EU timezone pretty well.

[–]Retawekaj 0 points1 point ago

Hello! I am definitely interested in helping out with modding r/worldnews. I'm a commited reader of worldnews; it's always the first subreddit I head over to every morning after checking the front page. I would love to do what I can to help out in any way and have several hours every day to spare.

I am currently a mod at /r/Geology which has around 3.5k subscribers, which is a fairly slow-growing subreddit with around 15 new subscribers each day. I'm also a mod (and the creator) at /r/FifthWorldPics, which also has around 3.5k subscribers and is growing rapidly (sometimes up to 50 new subscribers every day).

It's been an interesting experience modding two subreddits with different growing rates. /r/Geology is more of a calmer modding experience. The slow rate of growth allows for all of us to spend much time discussing and planning for the subreddit. /r/FifthWorldPics, being a newer and more sporatic subreddit has also shown to be an interesting experience for me for new subscribers are constantly messaging us with questions, ideas and problems.

I realize that these subreddits are pretty small compared to the 1.1 million r/worldnews subscribers, but I think that it would be a great experience for me to learn how to work with a much larger and much more active subreddit. Thanks so much for your consideration!

[–]ZoidbergMD 8 points9 points ago

I am a moderator of circlejerk so I have all the experience needed to ban everything I disagree with.

[–]Wordslinger1919/r/StephenKing 0 points1 point ago*

I suppose I can toss my hat in the ring here. I do mod /r/BestOf but it's the smallest default subreddit and is, I'm relatively certain, the easiest one to moderate because anything that comes from anywhere other than the reddit.com domain is qualified as spam as is whacked. Without mercy.

And I also fit all those other descriptions. No really. I can post, like, screencaps of stuff as to how I deal with spammers, new users with questions, new moderators. I'm all over it. As far as the second bulletpoint goes, I've got lightbulb flair in all the service subreddits and, well, you get the gist.

I'm safe, Q.

EDIT: Apparently /r/Movies is the smallest default subreddit. I stand corrected.

[–]slapchopsuey 1 point2 points ago

I would highly recommend wordslinger1919, one of the better moderators out there, and with the experience needed to do a great job in /worldnews.

[–]TheRedditPope 0 points1 point ago

I would join any subreddit WordSlinger moderates...even r/movies...he's just that good.

[–]reeds1999 3 points4 points ago*

AyeMatey is a censor, not a moderator. He removes many times more articles from r/news than all the other moderators combined. Do your subreddit a favor. Do not consider AyeMatey for the job.

[–]AyeMatey 0 points1 point ago

Just saw this now. I don't believe i am a censor, though I have been more active than any of the other mods, recently. I don't believe that activity proves censorship.

There's a rule in /r/news; only one. I apply it. It's a simple rule, is stated clearly, and I try to be consistent about it. I remove posts that violate the rule. When I remove a post, I specify why in a message. In my explanation, I also encourage people to fix the problem and repost, if appropriate.

If you have a specific issue with my actions in /r/news, I'd be happy to explain or discuss with you. If you don't get satisfaction, I encourage you to appeal to the other mods.

Your claim that I am a censor is off base.

[–]reeds1999 0 points1 point ago

You are a censor. Only the articles you deem to be "news" are news. I have not seen any other moderator on reddit remove as many articles as you. Your claim that you are a moderator is way off base. You are a censor.

[–]AyeMatey -1 points0 points ago

Only the articles you deem to be "news" are news.

??? That is how moderation works. Someone makes decisions. You apparently didn't like the one decision I made in your case. That doesn't make me a censor. That is a disagreement.

I have not seen any other moderator on reddit remove as many articles as you.

Numbers mean nothing. I remove lots of posts that do not belong on /r/news.

If I have removed a post without justification, point it out, and I'll address it. Here's what I think: you have a problem with one of my decisions, about one month ago, involving yourself. I deleted a post to a biased article. The situation was clear then, and I explained it. You didn't like the explanation. You are still whinging about it.

[–]reeds1999 0 points1 point ago

Numbers mean nothing.

Pathetic!

[–]TheRedditPope 6 points7 points ago

I would like to offer my services. Currently, I moderate the following:

/r/Campingandhiking (10k subscribers) /r/AdPorn (6k subscribers) /r/TrailMeals /r/World_Politics and a couple smaller communities.

I have the time to help out with World News but more importantly I have the passion to do so. I'm very active in the Republic of News mostly posting US news and I spend a lot of time in World News reading and contributing. My mod philosophy is centered heavily on the user/subscriber and making them feel at home in the communities I manage. Ask any of the mods that also help in the places I moderate or the ones who know me from the SFWPorn Network and they will tell you I am a thoughtful and measured moderator. Thanks for your consideration.

-TRP

[–]jamabake 0 points1 point ago

I can vouch for him as well. Not only is he an excellent moderator, he's very well read concerning world news. You'd be lucky to have him.

[–]TheRedditPope 1 point2 points ago

Thanks, mate!

[–]syncretic/r/bestof -2 points-1 points ago

I vouch for TheRedditPope, he is an excellent moderator in /r/AdPorn, very dedicated and hard-working. Also on reddit almost daily, which is an excellent quality for a default subreddit moderator.

[–]TheRedditPope -1 points0 points ago

Thanks, Syncretic! I appreciate that.

[–]sifarat/r/topwalls -1 points0 points ago

TheRedditPope also has my recommendation.

[–]TheRedditPope -1 points0 points ago

Thanks! That means a lot coming from you.

[–]Wordslinger1919/r/StephenKing -1 points0 points ago

I'd like to recommend this user as well.

[–]TheRedditPope 0 points1 point ago

Woot. Thanks! I certainly agree. ;-)

[–]soupyhandsSFWPorn Network -2 points-1 points ago

I would like to voice my support for this candidate. He is a dedicated and scrupulous individual who can be trusted with tasks both basic and complex. He never whines about users nor does he complain when his ideas receive minimal backing.

[–]MikePalecek 0 points1 point ago

Hey all,

I'd love to be a mod for r/worldnews. I read and comment almost every day. In the real world, I head up the International work of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers - so being up to date on world events is already my job.

I understand that part of the role of a mod is to help create the space for a discussion that includes multiple view points. I also understand that there are set rules of any subreddit. These two points must be balanced carefully.

Thanks!

[–]joelthelion 1 point2 points ago

To the applicants: instead of only listing your moderation experience, could you describe your vision for worldnews and what kind of moderator you would be? I think those are very important factors when choosing mods for a community.

[–]CG10277 2 points3 points ago

I would like to volunteer. I can commit 2-3 hrs per day and online most of the time. I mostly browse /r/worldnews and submit content there. I keep myself updated with world events which will help me in enforcing sidebar rules. Currently, I mod r/health and r/genomics.

[–]violentacrez/r/HeadCheese 1 point2 points ago

I'd like to nominate TalesAbound.

[–]BritishEnglishPolice 0 points1 point ago

Can you give reasons?

[–]violentacrez/r/HeadCheese 1 point2 points ago

He mods a few NSFW reddits for me, he follows the rules (such as they are), he's nice to the customers, and he wants the job.

[–]soccer/r/conspiracy 0 points1 point ago*

I use reddit for several hours everyday. I'm in europe so I can moderate in a different time zone to most of the other moderators. I have a history of helping combat spam by reporting it at r/reportthespammers.. I'm a strong supporter of freedom of speech and will only remove links that break the rules.

Some reddits I moderate: /r/media, /r/MiddleEastNews, /r/Paranormal, /r/spiders.

[–]NagastaBagamba 2 points3 points ago

You have pretty vile views on Jews and how they control the world, did 9/11, faked the holocaust, etc.

It's going to be hard to believe you won't carry those beliefs across to /r/worldnews.

[–]lingben 1 point2 points ago

you are also the mod for /r/iran where you are an apologist for the islamic regime's totalitarianism and up until it was erased recently, /r/holocaust where you spewed holocaust-denial drivel

zereshk

[–]canipaybycheck/r/askreddit 0 points1 point ago*

I mod r/ZombieSurvivalTactics, which has just reached its first 100 subscribers, and I did their css. I am also a mod at r/photoclass2012a and did their css as well.

I'll keep an eye on the spam filter, and I'm on reddit for hours daily. I am very familiar with global news and current landscape, as I have taken several classes devoted to this, if that makes any difference.

I'll be a great moderator for you.

[–]Jaraxor/Earthporn -3 points-2 points ago*

I'd like to throw my name in the hat.

I currently mod:

/r/earthporn - 84.6k

/r/mapporn - 12.4k

/r/villageporn - 7.3k

/r/InfrastructurePorn - 3.3k

as well as a few local subreddits such as /r/lincolnshire and /r/grimsby.

There are quite a few mods on the SFWPorn network, so I do have the time to spare, after all I am a student so most of my time is spent sitting around on reddit, and something more focussed can't be a bad thing. Check /r/moderationporn to see how active I am in the moderation of the subreddits there.

edit: I'm also in the UK, and I think that's an advantage, as it means in the time period of morning UK, which is 3am-9am US time depending the zone I can moderate when others might be sleeping.

[–]HandicapperGeneralSFWPorn Network -3 points-2 points ago*

Ignore this man! I am the one you want! I mod:

In addition, I spend a good amount of time on reddit each day. I also spend time on various mod irc channels, and am well-known among the mod community.

[–]hitlersshit 4 points5 points ago

yo dont advertise on someone elses comemtn

[–]syncretic/r/bestof 0 points1 point ago

They are co-mods in the SFWPorn Network, it was all in good fun.

HandicapperGeneral has a very... unique sense of humor, lol.

[–]sifarat/r/topwalls 0 points1 point ago

Handi for the Mod. :)

[–]gavin19/r/Enhancement 2 points3 points ago

Shouldn't an applicant also be at least somewhat au fait with current affairs and geography? I'm sure lots of people will fit the criteria, but would surely be at a significant disadvantage if they didn't know which posts were appropriate or not?

[–]ReactionsSFWPORN 0 points1 point ago

Hey!

I would like to help out moderating /r/worldnews. I moderate a few subreddits already, but I browse reddit a lot so I got more than enough time to help moderate another one. Here's a few of the reddits I moderate:

So why should you pick me as a moderator? Well, the biggest reason is probably that I browse reddit a lot, thus I will be able to keep up with the mod mail and spam filter. I am always polite, and will always try to help contributing to the subreddits I moderate as much as possible.

I'd like to mention /r/RageOps as an example. It's a subreddit focused on a very small part of rage comics, and it was the first subreddit I started moderating. I helped advertising the subreddit and increasing it's subscriber count a lot, by for example getting other subreddits to link to it and suggesting the creation of the Rage List to POLITE_ALLCAPS_GUY.

Other than that I also have experience from forum moderating, with the biggest one being www.buxville.net (the biggest Minecraft server as far as I know), with over 9000 users.

I live in Norway, which means that I'll be online while for example American moderators are asleep.

Thanks for considering my application.

[–]sifarat/r/topwalls 0 points1 point ago

I'd recommend Reactions too. He is a very gentle and polite guy. :)

[–]ReactionsSFWPORN 1 point2 points ago

Thanks!

[–]IAmAnAnonymousCoward/r/worldpolitics 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to nominate myself. I promise to http://i.imgur.com/oLeTP.jpg

[–]NagastaBagamba 1 point2 points ago

I'd like to volunteer. I'm Israeli and I feel that Israel is represented well enough on the front page of /r/worldnews to get some love on the sidebar as well... :-)

[–]karmadawg 0 points1 point ago

I will help if you can't find anyone else to do it, I haven't moderated before but I can at least help with spam removal. I assume that's mostly what I'd be doing anyways. I probably won't have an hour everyday but maybe around 20 minutes.

[–]kwangqengelele 1 point2 points ago

I'd like to give modding r/worldnews a shot. I currently moderate for r/funny, so I know that is a strike against me, but I try to follow the rules to the letter while giving the user the benefit of the doubt.

I wouldn't consider my political biases when modding. I'm more concerned with clearing out the reported and spam queue. Oh, and I love hunting spammers.

[–]Synth3t1c/r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu 0 points1 point ago

Hey - I think I'd make a great candidate:

  • I am not a moderator of any default subreddits.
  • Time is what I got. I own my own business and set my own hours.
  • Of course.
  • I have never banned a user (aside from spammers), although I have supported bans.
  • I mod /r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu so I have experience with larger reddits. I also mod /r/israel so I have experience with sensitive political topics as well.

If you have questions, just shoot me a PM.

[–]sifarat/r/topwalls -3 points-2 points ago

I'd love to and i guess I do fit all of these qualifications.

[–]DovGoldbery -4 points-3 points ago

One of the r/worldnews mods, davidreiss666, continuously tries to get me booted from Reddit. Dude knows I'm not a bot b/c he's PMed me a few times, yet he's a persistent little bugger. http://www.reddit.com/r/reportthespammers/search?q=dovgoldbery&restrict_sr=on

I post a lot about Israel from reputable sources (Haaretz, JPost, Time) & the community upvotes. He/she resorts to censoring and attempting to silence. Let the community downvote if I'm not providing value.

Whoever mods here should not bring a similar bias. davidreiss666 is obviously abusing his power to silent opposing viewpoints. Pretty lame buddy - viva transparency.

[–]qgyh2[S] 7 points8 points ago

I think the issue is that you submit each post around 3 - 4 times to different reddits. I suggest you submit each post only once to one reddit.

[–]DovGoldbery -2 points-1 points ago*

I point you to http://www.reddit.com/help/reddiquette good sir.

One should not complain about multi posting in various subreddits! Furthermore, my posts get upvoted so there IS value.

No reason to try so fervently to get someone banned unless you have a personal vendetta. Wonder why he's so sensitive...pretty pathetic.

Surely mods know the site guidelines!

[–]AyeMatey -2 points-1 points ago*

I mod /r/news, would love to also moderate /r/worldnews.

  • /r/news has about 100k subscribers, so about 1/10th the number for worldnews; the content is similar, and the rules are similar. (Very simple: 1: it must be a news item. 2: no editorializing in the headlines).

  • I've never banned a person, ever. There have been incidents where I've removed comments for being abusive, or where I've had to remind people to mind their manners.

  • I do remove posts. With every post I explicitly remove, I post a comment explaining the reason. Even if the reason is already explained in the sidebar, it helps to be explicit about it in a message with specific details. (for example, "Your headline was fine, until the part where you wrote, WTF? Reddit, we need to stop this now!") I often encourage people to re-post without the editorialized headline. In some cases I discourage reposts, explaining that both the headline and the item linked are inappropriate.

  • I've never had an argument or disagreement with a co-moderator on /r/news regarding a post. In my experience, the other mods are level headed and thoughtful, they don't need me second-guessing their actions. When the rules are simple and clear and explicit, it makes for easy co-moderation.

  • I have had one or two users that have reacted negatively to my decisions to remove or not unblock their posts. I don't engage in arguments with such people, though I do take the time to respond substantively to their concerns, and clearly explain why I did what I did. If they feel very strongly, and are unsatisfied with my explanation, I direct them to appear to the other mods. For example, once I removed a comment towards me that was abusive, and I explained why. The original poster complained, due to the perceived conflict of interest. I directed him to appeal to the other mods. I keep it professional and non-emotional at all times.

  • my approach as a mod is to blend into the background. The best mod is an invisible one. From time to time I post a longer comment in which I describe the mods approach, and what people ought to do if they find a thread that is objectionable. (Report, and/or message the mods explaining why).

  • I don't stand in the way of arguments that may arise in comment streams, but from time to time I step in and remind people to be civil to each other.

You moderate white supremacist, Holocaust denial and Jew-hate sub-reddits. It's strange that you didn't mention them. Just saying

[–][deleted] ago*

[deleted]

[–]daher -2 points-1 points ago

Regarding your edit: "Anyway my political views don't affect my moderating, free discussion is always good."

I asked you several times to remove the CSS-induced Magen David badge you gave me at /r/Holocaust, presumably because I fight the Holocaust denial that is being done there. You did not think my request deserved an answer. Why? Do you think not answering my request is the right way to moderate? Do you think that moderators that use their power to give CSS-induced badges (as opposed to editable flairs) to users show good Rediquette? And in particular when the badge is a Magen David in a Holocaust denial sub-reddit?

[–]daher -2 points-1 points ago

You moderate white supremacist, Holocaust denial and Jew-hate sub-reddits.

[–]leo1cw -2 points-1 points ago

I am a moderator of several small active subreddits, and I believe that I meet all of the above requirements. I am definitely not ban happy, and I definitely prefer solutions for all as opposed to self- assurances for myself. I am fairly independent in the community and so do not have any preferences for individuals. I believe that I can be very impartial and fully enforce and comply with the rules, while working with both the users and the moderators to form a friendly, open cooperation.

I believe that one of my greatest strengths is lack of preference and thus fairness.

[–]sifarat/r/topwalls -3 points-2 points ago

I'd also nominate Harpertown

[–]thefortitude/r/gifs -2 points-1 points ago

I am moderator of r/gifs. My experiences have made me capable of sifting through spam. I look forward to implementing /r/worldnews' policies to make it a better community. Please consider me. Thank you.

[–]Chipware/r/vegas -1 points0 points ago

I'd like to mod a larger subreddit. My current mod duties are for <10,000 subscribers and I would really like to see how a larger subreddit works behind the scenes. If not /r/worldnews, then another one.

[–]devtesla/r/SRSDiscussion -2 points-1 points ago

Someone who [...] isn't ban happy, tries to work with users while still enforcing rules.

lol not me then. The "find solutions" part is taken out because I do like to find solutions. The solution is banning.

[–]burgplayer 0 points1 point ago*

Id like to throw my name in the hat.

I have nothing to offer but my time, as most of it is spent on Reddit and my own views of what should make it to the front page of /r/Worldnews. Enforcing Reddit's reddiquette, and /r/Worldnews' reddiquette will be my #1 goal, not banning on the spot for posting cute cat videos.

I work 12 hour shifts for the military in Korea, so I would be able to serve this Reddit for a long period of time, during off peak hours.

Vote for me, together we can change America! Or wait... something like that ;)

[–]ProudLikeCowz -2 points-1 points ago

I reddit a lot on my free time and I'm pretty thoughtful when it comes to talking to different people of opinion. I wouldn't mind being a mod and helping you guys out. =)

[–]abuali7866 -2 points-1 points ago

I manage a few small subs and my real world profession is managing on Online News Room. I would like to throw my name in the hat as well. Thanks.
