Is Brooks Brothers the only place to buy nice extra slim fit dress shirts? (self.malefashionadvice)
submitted 3 months ago by baileyboy14
I love the fit of the extra slim fit dress shirts by Brooks Brothers, but usually only pick them up if they're on sale (still around 44$ + tax and s&h). What other quality brands make an extra slim fit?
[–]shujinConsistent Contributor 13 points14 points15 points 3 months ago
No, there are many. I advise that you read through this.
Some affordable options include Uniqlo, H+M, TM Lewin, and some would argue Express. Once you plan on spending more money a whole world of slim fit shirts opens up to you. Ervell, Gitman Vintage, Engineered Garments, Band of Outsiders, Comme des Garcons, Ovadia and Sons, just mountains of brands.

Thanks man, the forum link is quite a bit to go through...and I'm browsing some of the recommended sites now...I knew I couldn't be the only one frustrated with only having a "fitted" option for dress shirts...
[–]liiime 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I'm not familiar with TM Lewin, but Uniqlo, H+M and Express are all well below the quality of Brooks Bros. A BB shirt will likely last you the better part of a decade. Uniqlo might last you a couple years. H+M and Express ... you're lucky if they last a year or more.

the JCrew tailored fit and regular fit RL Rugby shirts can be pretty nice and are the same fit as the BB extra slim fit
[–]Happyxix 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Not even close
[–]jsalvatier 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Certainly not on J Crew tailored fit.
[–]jsalvatier 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Thanks for this. Do you know which ones of these have highish arm holes? I got a Gitman shirt and it seemed to have relatively low armholes, which I find a bit annoying. Also, is there a reason to want non-high armholes on slim shirts?
[–]jrocbaby 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
You should look for arm holes that fit you and that you are comfortable in.
The reason low armholes exist in such great numbers now a days is not because that is what we should be wearing, but because it is cheaper for them make and stock a 1 size fits all shirt. When they make and stock different sized arm holes for each of their shirts it drives up prices. Although there are plenty of decently priced places that stock cuts with high arm holes. Keep your eyes open.

People think 45 is expensive for a dress shirt?
[–]patiscool1 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
Also, when are Brooks Brothers dress shirts $44?
[–]baileyboy14[S] 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Their website usually has a few on clearance. Random fits, collars, colors, etc., but they all fit so perfectly, its hard to beat...
[–]TJNekko 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I stopped into one today. They had a ton of shirts that were 70% off of the usualy 60-90 price tag. Sleeve length was the only reason why I didn't get anything, but the fit and designs were solid.
[–]pujuma 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
around now, 50~60% off
[–]baileyboy14[S] 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
Yeah, I'm a full time student and work full time at an office. I gotta dress nice, but can't go all out...Lol, and stepping up from van husen and others like that is pretty fancy in my book.
[–]Arcs_Of_A_Jar -20 points-19 points-18 points 3 months ago
This doesn't sound plausible, you can't be a full-time student and a full-time office worker at the same time, it's an oxymoron.
[–]baileyboy14[S] 10 points11 points12 points 3 months ago
Lol, it's not much fun, but yeah, I work 8-5 and go to school nights and weekends. Not much life outside of the two, but I feel pretty productive...
[–]Arcs_Of_A_Jar -18 points-17 points-16 points 3 months ago
That's not full-time student, that's part-time student.
[–]baileyboy14[S] 9 points10 points11 points 3 months ago
14 units between 2 schools is full time sir. I have the bills to prove it...
[–]R7-D1 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
That sounds like you're double part time, which means you miss any benefits that could come with being full time. Is that not way more expensive than taking all your classes at one school?
Na, I work for a local courthouse, full time with benefits...I'm taking 9 units at the local university, paying full time, but also paying a bit for a 5 unit bio class at the community college on saturdays...classes are limited these days, gotta get what ya can, when ya can...
[–]R7-D1 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
That makes sense, sounds like they're keeping you busy. Good luck!
[–]itsOKillwait 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Express fitted shirts are a pretty slim fit.
[–]icyicyicy 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Seconded. They're not great quality, but they fit extremely well in the chest. I wouldn't advise purchasing for daily wear as they don't hold up THAT well.
[–]Syric 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
What do people exactly mean when they say Express shirts don't hold up? I have several that I've been wearing regularly for work for about two years. They're fine as far as I can tell, other than that they don't stay ironed as well as other shirts. (But they had that problem when they were new)
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
All mine start to look crappy after about 5-10 wears. The fabric loses its tension, starts to wrinkle and sag easily. Just looks terrible.
I think I see what you mean about sag. I thought that was just because I've been losing weight and they didn't fit me the same as before, but maybe it's the shirts' fault after all.
[–]jrocbaby 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Yeah, their shirts are made from a blend of Spandex. Wrinkling is a big problem, so the fabric losing it's elasticity.
[–]thestraylightpun 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Spanex = wrinkling problem
wait, what?
it's just a bit of spandex. It gets stretched out easily and loses it's elasticity.
I wear mine solely to church not on a daily basis so they've held up perfectly fine and look nice for what I'm using them to do. I just wouldn't recommend them to someone wanting to wear them daily for business casual and the price doesn't reflect the longevity.

Specifically their Extra Slim shirts, which you may or may not find in store.
What size (height/weight) are you OP and what size do you wear? Been thinking about ordering, just curious.
I'm 16 x 35. 6'2, 170lbs.. I've tried a variety of slim fits, but the extra slim fit from brooks brothers is a little more snug just under the arms, which is a great fit. I wish I could go for more, but they're like $90 shirts usually.
Wow, almost my exact size, that's what I like to hear. Got motivation to make the drive there this week - thanks a ton!
Yeah, I usually only buy online...I know the outlets don't carry extra slim fit, but the stores should...They usually have a few on clearance on their site, but I'm not sure on the store prices/sales..
[–]jinp6301 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
wow you are actually exactly my size, down to the weight. I personally thought that the BB extra slim was still too big in the waist.
[–]alostserendipity 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
J.Lindeberg has some very nice shirts.
[–]Misterine 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Exactly.. how extra slim fit are these? I'm a size 32, and it's also hard to find a jacket
[–]Sushirobots 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I have recently bought a few ralph lauren slim fit. I find they fit just a bit nicer on me than the custom fit. Bit more pricey but best fitting shirt off the rack for my shape.
Meaning more slim or less slim?
[–]Sushirobots 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
More slim.
[–]thestraylightpun 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
H&M
[–]timjyjy 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Calvin Klein makes GREAT slim fit dress shirts, if you can find them on sale, they're around 35-60 bucks.
[–]OzzymonDios 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Thomas Pink
[–]Die-In-A-Fire 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Charles tyrwhitt tailored fit (not slim)
[–]dradiscontact 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Find a store/brand whose collar and shoulder size fit you, then tailor the rest (slim sides and shorten sleeve length as needed).
