I think you should really judge what others are wearing in your position. If all the interns are wearing business casual and you walk in with a three piece on you will look like a douche. "dressing for the job you want" only goes so far.

This. I've never heard of interns wearing suits. They generally wear dress shirts with no tie or a polo, depending on the office.

OP, unless someone told you to wear a suit, I wouldn't recommend it. Just do your job well and the important people will notice you. An office, especially one where you're new, isn't the place to make fashion statements.

I'm wondering if a vest is too formal for a day-to-day business environment, and if it is, should I care?

Yes and yes. Don't wear it.

Interesting. Show your work.

Vests are the classic example of a next-level item that young guys go for and more often than not don't look good in. Focus instead on basic things like an impeccable fit on your suit, nice shoes, and a perfectly-knotted tie.

I normally reserve the vest for more formal days (ie. first day, important meetings, etc.), but I think a lot depends on the attitude/style of your office. Give it a go tomorrow and see how it feels. You want to be remembered as the intern with style, not the intern with more expensive clothes than the boss(es). Congrats on the j-o-b!

The suit was $200 from Sears, so I doubt it'll be more expensive than anyone's.

Also, it's not a job, it's an unpaid internship I'll have to drive an hour and a half through DC traffic to get to, but hey, there's only one way into the field I want to work in so a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

I'm not trying to correct you, just show how important this gig could be for me. I appreciate your help. I've seen people pull off vests for interviews for these sorts of internships, so I'm learning towards wearing it.

Don't wear the vest. Better to blend in your first day than stand out as that weird intern wearing the vest.

I only wear my vest at weddings and the like. It's a party thing IMO.

I think a vest would draw a lot of unwanted attention. Instead you should invest in some nice dress shirts and ties that make you look sharp. Also make sure the suit is tailored well.

Better to have your suit/shirt/pants fit impeccably and be remembered for that. Wearing a vest as a lowly intern isn't going to get you any style points really, it will just look like you are 1. trying too hard 2. don't know where you stand. And if your suit doesn't fit perfectly and you are trying to wear a vest as an intern? You'll look like you don't really know what you're doing either.

A well fitting suit, good tie selection/knot, and nice shoes will get all the attention you need. It is very easy to distinguish between people who dress well and people who don't just from their fits. A vest is is not required to stand out, and is simply too loud.
