Then... look up your irc network's policy on hostmasks.

Pretty much!

Go to #freenode and message a staff member asking to apply an unaffliated hostmask to your nick. You will get something like this:

DRW_ has userhost ~D@unaffiliated/drw-/x-6592512

Staff members on freenode are voiced on #freenode.

If you are on freenode, you just need a registered nick and then you can join up in #freenode and ask to be cloaked.

Unless you are an operator in a channel you won't qualify for an affiliation mask. You can also donate to the freenode project and get a donator's cloak.

Do I have to set it up, or do I have to ask

[–]jesst 0 points1 point ago

you have to register your own nick. you just send

/msg nickserv register <password> <email>

Youll get an email confirmation that will tell you your next step to confirm registration. Once you have done that you can go into #freenode and ask for a cloak :)

Alright, thanks. I registered my name, but wasn't sure about the cloak. Thanks for the help, much appreciated :)

Unless you are an operator in a channel you won't qualify for an affiliation mask.

Why don't operators qualify? Can they qualify by donating?

edit:

Also, why doesn't freenode mask IPs automatically like rizon?

you have to be an operator in an affiliated channel i.e. reddit or wikipedia (there are others, those are just the ones i could think of off the top of my head). Yes you can get a special mask if you donate. Just anyone can get whats called an "unaffiliated mask".

I don't know. I'm not familiar with rizon's policies, as I am not on any of their channels.

And just a little basic information on how PeerBlock works: it stops unwanted parties on its lists from being able to connect to you, or you to them. It doesn't in any way hide your IP.

Just clearing up that basic misunderstanding.

Ooh alright. That's for clearing that up
