I too would love to solve this issue since I am getting a new Verizon Android phone on Sunday and have an iTouch that I would proudly sell since I wouldn't need it anymore.

They are about the same. The hard part for me was replacing software. I use doubletwist player on my phone, Google listen for podcasts, and media monkey to sync.

Well another important part is sync. I really love my iTouch as a media player, but if I had a dying wish, it would be to see iTunes wiped out from the face of the earth. I'm a linux user, so drag-and-drop sync is kind of a must-have. I'm assuming Android does that out of the box. Right now I'm looking into Samsung Spica. Quite affordable and does what I need it to do.

this is the main reason why I am dropping the iphone after my contract is up. It should not be so difficult to control how I interact with music files and applications that I already own and forced backup is ridiculous.

Totally agree! iTunes is horrible.

But, it did encourage me to move to Ubuntu.

Agreed. I don't think any phone particularly makes a better mp3 player. Just look at form factor and hardware specs. Pretty sure they all have 3.5 headphone jacks and rocker volume, and they all run approximately the same software.
