Sorry for your loss. I hope the dumbass label is a term of endearment.

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 8 points9 points ago

Totally. He was a dumbass and a dick and he knew it and we loved him for it. If you had a stupid idea, you could get Mike to do it.

[–]cerealdaemon 3 points4 points ago

sounds like a pretty good guy!

[–]drewism 7 points8 points ago

Sorry for your loss.

[–]KazyoleCervélo R3 Team 16 points17 points ago

Also, please don't ride drunk on busy roads

FTFY

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 7 points8 points ago

Thanks. I felt a little hypocritical saying just don't ride drunk since I have.

[–]smckenzie232012 Novara Safari 3 points4 points ago

I used to ride my bike drunk often when I was young. At least you aren't going to kill a family of 5 like you would in a car. The risk is there, but it is mostly yours.

[–]KazyoleCervélo R3 Team 6 points7 points ago

The person who hits you still has to deal with the psychological effects of killing someone.

You could also hit a pedestrian.

[–]smckenzie232012 Novara Safari 1 point2 points ago

No it is true. The city I was in had no transit at the time. Too poor for a cab. Seemed the best option at the time.

[–]pikasurfer2001 Quintana Roo Tequilo 1 point2 points ago

I live in Davis and I have done more than my fair share of riding drunk coming back from a party, if you are going through bike paths and neighborhood streets it is usually pretty safe. Although there is a certain level of inebriation that doesn't allow you to even balance. If you suck at riding a bike in the first place its definitely not a good idea to ride drunk anyways. I can definitely say that people riding after drinking has definitely saved many lives here. I have never heard of a story like this until I read this post, and I am a senior here.

[–]vivaseandave 5 points6 points ago

I will be at A Comic Shop today for the memorial. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 1 point2 points ago

Awesome, I'll be there too. I'm pissed his bike got trashed. I wanted to see about putting it with the memorial someone started outside the shop.

[–]vivaseandave 4 points5 points ago

I know a few people are working on a ghost bike. They are gonna weld the parts all together and cover it in reflective tape and bolt it like 10 feet up above the intersection where he got hit.

[–]kamoylan 4 points5 points ago

I think of ghost bikes as memorials to people who were killed by cars through no fault of their own. This ghost bike feels inappropriate to me.

(I feel sad for you for your loss.)

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 1 point2 points ago

Really? I need to get in on this! It'll be perfect. EDIT: There needs to be cans of PBR hanging from it.

[–]vivaseandave 2 points3 points ago

and Aaron got his shoes and hung them in the GeekEasy, so that is nice.

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 1 point2 points ago*

I saw the picture! That is so awesome! I'm gonna just fucking bawl when I see them though

[–]vivaseandave 2 points3 points ago

You and everybody. I was there yesterday to show my support and just see everyone. He had just put them up when I was talking to him. It is gonna be a good/sad/cathartic night for everyone.

[–]skwigger 5 points6 points ago

Mike was a cool guy. He was the only one working the first day I ever went to A Comic Shop. He had a real mohawk over a foot high. I'm surprised to see he was 28, looked younger.

I wanted to bring up the point of bikers obeying traffic laws but didn't quite know how to do it without being a dick. It sucks to lose him this way.

Also, 99.99% sure you can get a DUI even on a bike.

[–]nanomagnetic 3 points4 points ago

Also, 99.99% sure you can get a DUI even on a bike.

Depends on the jurisdiction.

[–]TheProle 1 point2 points ago

'round here (Austin TX) they give you a PI (public intoxication).

[–]nanomagnetic 0 points1 point ago

And in WA and OR the legal framework is just twisted enough that a LEO can't gather evidence of a DUI if you're on a bicycle rather than a motor vehicle.

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, a lot of bike riders think they can fuck around because it's a bike and we're speedy, but then this stuff happens. Totally on page with him being younger too. I always thought he was like 24 or less. Oh, and yeah, they can get you on a bike, but it's not a DUI. It's basically the same thing though.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

It is a DUI (at least in CO), but it doesn't take points off your license and insurance companies can't raise your rates.

[–]sixtyfootersdude 0 points1 point ago

Depends on jurisdiction. I Canada -> DUI.

(at least the parts I am familiar with)

[–]chinaunderattack 3 points4 points ago

I ride drunk all the time. I make a point not to run red lights when doing so and to treat stop signs as a yield. That being said, I haven't ridden so drunk that I can barely control my body since being in college. That shit was dangerous and scary, and I am lucky to have made it back to my shitty dorm room in one piece.

[–]ddddaveTrek Gritty 5 points6 points ago

This really hits close to home. He was the same age as me and I use the same excuse for riding my bike shitfaced. "At least I'll only kill myself and not another driver." I ride my bike all over town, and I especially like going to bars on it because I feel like it's better than driving a car drunk, which I'm not proud of doing either. I like to drink and I like to ride my bike. Sometimes the two activities coincide, and most of the time when I'm drunk caution is thrown to the wind. I haven't had any accidents, but I've had a few close calls. I think it's fair to say that when your bicycle is your primary form of transportation you're always going to have close calls.

I feel like a fucking asshole though. This hurts my heart, even more so because deep down I know I'm not going to learn anything from it. I'm still going to go to a bar on my bike, and I'm still going to come home on my bike. I wish I could say that this is going to change my perspective, but I don't want to be a hypocrite or a liar.

Triforce Mike will be in my thoughts though, I don't think I'll be running any lights in the middle of the night without looking anymore. I'm sorry for your loss, I used to live in Orlando and am familiar with A Comic Shop and would go there every now and then when I was in school. I'm glad he has friends to honor and remember his life. It's not fucked up to ask what intersection in Orlando, is it?

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 1 point2 points ago

It was actually just outside the shop on University and 436, on his way home from Odin's Den I believe.

Don't do it man. I mean, I rode home drunk Monday night after drinking all night in honor of him. There's no excuse when you can always spare time to sit for a bit or time your cut off better. But I get it, I never learn either. If you're gonna do it, take side roads and stay on the sidewalk at least?

[–]4FukSake1983 Raleigh, Fixed conversion 3 points4 points ago

Just wanted to let you know that he was headed to the bar when this happened. He was drunk though, that part is true. We had been at a bike polo event all day and he had to leave to go do his geek show and was gonna meet us at the Den after. He never made :/ Everyone got worried and started calling around. Happened around 10:30pm Sunday night. I'm actually the one who put the ghost bike together and we mounted last night where it happened at the intersection of Hanging Moss and 436. This kid made an impact on everyone that knew him, even if you only met him once. He was literally a ray of sunshine and the best partner in crime anyone could have. Someone said it best when we were all at the hospital. "Either you loved Mike, or you never met him".

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for more details. I'd been told it was on university and 436, but I'm really glad to know the truth of what happened. Thank you for working on the bike too. I saw this evening, it's awesome. I just started crying like a bitch when I saw it. That's a perfect description of him too. Five minutes and you loved him. Oh fuck, here I go again...

Is it cool if I go by tomorrow and put a poster with a triforce and some ponies on the bike?

[–]4FukSake1983 Raleigh, Fixed conversion 2 points3 points ago

No problem and yes hang whatever, leave flowers, stuffed animals, ANYTHING that Mike would have liked. I think the more things that are placed around it the more of a chance of it being left alone by the city.

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 2 points3 points ago

All the things!

[–]DareMaster 0 points1 point ago

He was an amazing guy and I'm still sad & shocked that he's gone. Seeing him in the hospital was hard but it has encouraged me to bike more instead of less and also to get involved in bike awareness as well as encouraging bike safety.

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 1 point2 points ago

Oh totally, I cried like a bitch in the hospital and have been crying every day since. I've been riding way more now and finally really taking care of my bike. Finally got a helmet too. Mike used to bitch at me all the time for riding without a helmet because they're uncomfortable to me. He finally won the argument.

[–]ddddaveTrek Gritty 0 points1 point ago

I never have that far to go, my regular bar is just under two miles from my house. Sometimes I'll ride home and not see a single car on the way, I can ride in the middle of the road the whole way and be fine. I can see how that one car in an intersection can be disastrous though. I usually take side roads everywhere, but not sidewalks. They're fucking deathtraps in Miami, the quality is shitty and drivers are never looking for someone on the sidewalk, so you get cut off by a turning car much more frequently. I also don't like riding on sidewalks at night where I can't see everything on the path. I have a headlight, but even so I'd rather just be in the street. There's a path along the metrorail here that's kinda like a sidewalk and I'll take that, but I always go a lot slower there for fear of a fallen branch or sleeping hobo. I guess slowing down is probably the best idea at night.

That intersection is dangerous even in a car. I've seen the aftermath of quite a few accidents there. I would definitely stick to the sidewalk if I had to ride along Semoran, the road is too wide and cars go too fucking fast. I hate roads like that, and Florida is lousy with them. When there are 3 lanes in each direction, you'd think it'd be easy to share the road. Nope, it's worse. People just drive more recklessly on them and go too fast.

It sucks that he was killed and it sucks that he was drunk while it happened, but it's also a dangerous road to begin with. I'm not saying that the alcohol had nothing to do with it, but it's not like no one sober has ever been killed on a bike. Riding a bike in any city is dangerous, there's no denying that. So what's the greater lesson? Don't ride drunk or slow down and obey traffic laws?

I know it's all of the above, but I'm going to just pretend it was the latter so that I can still continue on in my happy land of denial.

[–]gaymo 4 points5 points ago

Sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing. You would think this stuff is common sense but some people need to hear these things so they know this stuff is real and it could happen.

[–]9ner 3 points4 points ago

Three years ago I scratched badly (and destroyed a rim) because I was drunk and slow. Do not ever drink and "drive", folks.

At least let it go for a few hours.

[–]Werepez 4 points5 points ago

He was one of the closest friends I ever made in Orlando, and it still hasn't entirely hit me that he's gone. I moved out of town back in May, so not seeing him on a weekly basis was something I'd gotten used to, but the air is just so heavy now.

The gathering at A Comic Shop was really nice, though, it was great to see all of our friends and to see how loved he was. ♥ I definitely am glad that my life was enriched by a cool dude like him. :))

[–]valhon99 4 points5 points ago

Upvote for knowing Mike, he was so lovely, I am so sorry for your loss. My son came from England for the memorial. A lot of hearts are broken, but you just have to smile when you think of him <3

[–]ginpandaEnter bike & year[S] 1 point2 points ago

From England? Holy shit! You're son it awesome, I'm glad he could make it.

[–]Werepez 1 point2 points ago

It brings tears to my eyes (in happiness) seeing all the people that came from across the country or, in this case, across the pond. Amazing!

[–]goood-dog 2 points3 points ago

I am sorry for your loss.

[–]To0n11984 CrMo Shogun 400 Touring 2 points3 points ago

You have my condolences, and another reason for why I stop at every light. In the game of physics, cars beat bikes. F = M*A and all that.

[–]protoAmericanThorn Club Tour 4 points5 points ago

That physics > laws is important to remember even when sober. Just because you can cross and it's the car driver that is at fault for running a red light will not make much of a difference to you.

[–]To0n11984 CrMo Shogun 400 Touring 1 point2 points ago

Very true... I do look both ways, but that's out of habit of nearly being only run over as a ped.

[–]valhon99 2 points3 points ago

Aaah, Triforce Mike, our hearts are breaking all over Florida. He was a lovely bloke and an incredible dancer. In Nerdhalla xxxx

[–]GodHatesSkags 2 points3 points ago

This is just a reminder of how important it is to obey traffic signals. Too often people get hurt or worse in tragic accidents like this that could have been avoided by simply stopping at a light or stop sign.

Please, please, PLEASE be careful, everyone.

[–]TheGunshineState 1 point2 points ago

I heard one of the guys that showed up to both the pub crawl and polo last weekend was in intense care, but I didn't really know any of the details. We actually briefly discussed it at our weekly meeting for the bike advocacy club on campus, but no one was quite sure of the circumstances. I didn't know him, but I do recognize him now, and its sad to now put a face to the whole thing. It's unfortunate this is how it happened, but it certainly serves as a warning and a reminder to us all.

[–]Renovatio_ 0 points1 point ago

I rode my bike drunk once. It was about 1am and I was behind another cyclist when he inexplicably swerved into a curb and went headfirst into the pavement. He got up quickly, blood pouring from his face. I asked if he was okay and he said yes. I probably should of stayed to see if he was okay but I would of been no help in my state. Even though I'm a decent enough cyclist I don't think I'll do it again. Walking is difficult enough when I'm trashed.

[–]safeforworkyworky -2 points-1 points ago

He was an hero.

[–]valhon99 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, he lives on xxxx

[–]madcal -2 points-1 points ago

Riding while drunk is the same as driving while drunk. Stupid and illegal.

The only difference is a drunk in a car usually survives the inevitable accident, and is more likely to kill someone other than themselves in the process.

It's a shame that he died, but he brought it on himself if he was as you say "Drunk as hell".

And I haven't seen anyone else raise the issue so I will, his actions while fatal to only himself, have likely also scarred someone else for life (the poor driver who got to run over him). So don't ride drunk.

He didn't die right away. Went into a coma, got put on life support and got taken off when they realized he was so fucked up there was nothing they could do.

Even if he had, passed away is fine. Would you rather I say he got fucking mutilated? Car hit him so hard his body shut down?

Passed away is fine, and yeah, it's insensitive.
