Honestly, I don't think my mac experience would be the same without QS. I know that Spotlight was released in April 2004, so the idea has been around a little longer that QS.

It seems like Windows-to-Mac converts always download uTorrent right away. Transmission is far superior in pretty much every way, though.

Papers. There's nothing like it when you're trying to do research,

[–]Nerdlinger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How does it compare to DEVONthink?

[–]Engineroom 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I run both. I set papers to default for research papers, and then just get DEVONthink to index the Papers "library" directory.

Works amazingly well. I personally couldn't do without either of them. Once you get them working in unison, it's incredible.

[–]thingamagizmo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never used it, but DEVONthink looks pretty good. Papers has an iPad and iPhone app though, and it has built in academic search engines, like google scholar (which is 10 times better on Papers than on the actual web). But just to be safe, I'd try out both and see what you think!

Logic Studio. So simple but so powerful.

[–]Headpuncher 0 points1 point ago

Logic is like a lot of software aimed at professionals, it gets used by people like me who need a lot less options if they are to be productive.

What I really like for getting tracks set up quickly is Renoise. Once I got used to the tracker layout I found it to be so easy to use.

Things for task management (Getting Things Done)

Skim for reading/annotating papers (like Preview but more functionality for annotation and integration with BibDesk)

BibDesk for managing bibliographies (like JabRef but better)

TextMate text editor (and so much more that's worth paying for it)

[–]btgeekboy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ooh, thanks for Skim and BibDesk. They'll be very helpful for my research.

[–]mgacy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Skim is amazing. Before, I absolutely hated dealing with PDFs and would always prefer to print my articles. Now, however, I always try to obtain research materials as PDFs.

I use BibDesk for books, but I prefer Papers for articles.

[–]neosapien 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What does Papers bring that BibDesk doesn't? For me, I just want something to manage a library of pdf articles along with bibtex. What else does Papers offer that makes it worth the cost to you?

[–]mgacy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel the way Papers integrates with different journal databases justifies its cost. Check out the chart comparing BibDesk, Papers, and other bibliography programs on Wikipedia.

As far as I know, if I want to get an article from JSTOR or Project Muse into BibDesk, I have to search the site, download the PDF and export the citation, open up the Finder (or use LaunchBar) and add those to BibDesk. The whole process is a big pain.

With Papers, I can search for articles and add the citation and PDF all within the program and in a fraction of the time.

Can you or anyone else explain why? I tried it a few years back when it was still getting regular updates and I simply couldn't see what the fuss was all about. Maybe I missed something or wasn't making use of the features but having to have various windows for all sorts of tasks got on my nerves.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did an entire project last summer on my 13 inch Macbook (2 GHz C2D, 2 GB RAM, 9400M, etc.) with Final Cut Studio. Final Cut, Color, Motion, and Compressor all ran well enough for me never to jump over to a desktop because my laptop wasn't keeping up. I lierally could not do most of my work if I didn't have Studio.

I do love to work with FCP and the Pro Res format is awsome.

On PC the adobe suite does much the same - Premiere is almost identical to FCP these days and CS5 is looking great. Not only that but the link from Premiere to AFX is awsome.

I can't wait to see how the CUDA acceleration increases the power of an Adobe setup: 4 streams of 4K red at once? Yes please.

Disable Facebook chat in Facebook?

[–]zemo 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the problem is that when I have Facebook open, then Adium connects, Facebook's session is invalidated and I'm logged out. When I go to click anything it tells me to log in. Once I log back in, Adium gets kicked out. I can't seem to get connected to both at the same time. Logging onto one disconnects the other.

[–]harlows_monkeys 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Until they fix the frequent disconnect bug, Adium is useless. Googling shows people have been having this problem for over two years, so I'm not hopeful on this front.

[–]bdfortin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm in the boat of people who haven't been experiencing the bug.

If there's a bug report filed for it at http://trac.adium.im/ you should consider adding your specs to the bug report to help narrow down the cause. Otherwise you could file the bug report.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why the fuck would anybody downvote me for this? Fucking fanboys

[–]hab136 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because the down arrow is for comments that add nothing to the discussion.

Name-calling ("The tabs look like they came out of Windows 98") doesn't advance the conversation. The only possible replies are "I hate it too" or "no you're wrong it's pretty". Constructive criticism on how they could improve the interface, or what specifically you don't like about it would be better.

[–]rtgjf 0 points1 point ago

Adobe Lightroom (osx&win) provides a pleasurable photography workflow and does wonders to tweak that perfect image. Unfortunately it's too expensive unless you qualify for an education discount. My favorite daily use app by far. In the zero cost category, I find Dropbox indispensable on keeping all my stuff synced between computers. Bonus dropbox referral link for anyone who still hasn't signed up and got extra storage space.

DEVONthink Pro Office Absolutely incredibly personal database.

Papers Organises research papers. Indispensable for me, but if you're not in research / studying probably no use.

Circus Ponies Notebook Best note app i've seen. Similar to one-note, but way, way better. Do all my research / uni stuff with this.

Overflow App launcher, but mouse based. I bind the 'show window' to a mouse button. Works awesome

Omnifocus Best to-do app ever. Things is also good if you need less features.

CloudApp File / Link / Image sharing app. Really quite useful. Cmd+C = upload image / link / file to cloud, automatically puts shortened url in clipboard for you to paste.

How do Windows editors like Notepad++ compare to TextMate? I've always wondered.

[–]laudinum 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a Textmate clone available, haven't tried it. When I used PC, I used Notepad++, it was a pretty good basic free editor. I have used jEdit in the past also. Textmate's bundles are just enough coding help. I do not like the code hints of a full IDE, in Textmate, I can type form (tab) and a form skeleton is generated.

[–]masterJ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I use Sublime Text at work on a Vista machine. It can use Textmate bundles fairly well, with the same tab completion feature. I used E for a while, but it just isn't as good.

It's also beautiful full screen and has a functional split screen, which will be nice when/if they're introduced into Textmate.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Notepad++ and others don't have the advanced snippet support that text mate has, which makes it a huge pain to use. Additionally, it doesn't have the nice project view that textmate has. I haven't tried the textmate clone either, although I will now, but it's not just the snippets themselves that make textmate great, but the implementation.

[–]masterJ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I prefer Sublime Text to E on Windows, and it also has most of the Textmate features.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is actually what I have on there now. Definitely better than the other editors I've tried, but it steel doesn't feel right to me and doesn't have the smart snippet capability textmate does (you can tab through a snippet to input parameters or get to other significant parts).

[–]masterJ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

doesn't have the smart snippet capability textmate does (you can tab through a snippet to input parameters or get to other significant parts).

... yes it does? The {$1: example} triggers work the same as on Textmate... As far as I can tell the only difference between snippets on the two is that sublime goes by keystrokes instead of the text before your cursor, so you must type the trigger all at once.

Oh, and true multiple cursors vs column editing is nice. This is slated to come to Textmate when and if 2.0 is released.

As far as I can tell the only difference between snippets on the two is that sublime goes by keystrokes instead of the text before your cursor, so you must type the trigger all at once.

Well that's why my snippets aren't happening half the time. As for smart snippets, that's great news, I'll have to try it. Personally I could care less about column editing but I guess that's a nice bonus.

Notepad++ is ok, it just doesn't have the huge number of add ons and macros (you can make them, but the community isn't there). The e editor is TextMate compatible, but I haven't used it.

I couldn't live without Growl, HardwareNotifier and MailAppetizer. As well as GlimmerBlocker, MenuMeters and iStatMenus.

Downvoted for making me think that MailAppetizer had finally been updated for 10.6.

Can anyone suggest one for sorting/managing your downloads folder?

[–]greenysmac 0 points1 point ago

Hazel. You can build rules that are folder specific. I use this for my downloads folder to sort/unarchive/etc.

Listen to this man, Hazel is really good. Defaults are good enough out-of-the-box; but it also lets you customize for every pedantic power-user specification you might have :)
