Do you ever catch a look from any of the current students, like, "if that chump had gone to college, he wouldn't be cleaning my shit right now," or anything like that?

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, most of the students are under the impression that I am a student worker because all the other janitors are much older than me.

IRL it would go like this:

Professor: "Who wrote these mediocre undergrad-level comments on my blackboard? I'm going to call the custodian to clean this shit up."

Custodian cries silently as he erases his magnum opus.

So what do you think held you back? Is the market for it just shit now? What was your GPA like? Did you do any of those extra resume building activities?

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My GPA was a 3.5, in my major it was higher. One thing I know held me back is my lack of work experience. While I was going to school, I was paying for my rent and food myself, and I was unwilling/unable to take an unpaid internship. I did have one lined up, but at the last moment (a month before my final semester), I was told I could no longer be hired because the company had fired a bunch of employees and now considered it unethical to hire me. My resume would probably look run of the mill, I'm guessing. I have A+ and Network+ certs. I know they are a joke, but I was paid to take the tests.

Is this an outsourced skill now?

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 6 points7 points ago

If you are referring to IT in general, I would say no, but I believe that a lot of low level help desk is outsourced, and I'm pretty sure that programming is going that way as well, but I could be wrong.

Junior-level programming and junior-to-mid-level QA is kinda going that way (although we still need domestic junior developers so they can grow into senior developers, of course). Software design and architecture is definitely still a "home-sourced" skill, however.

[–]daboku 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm in a similar situation - I graduated with a Political Science degree, but I never had time to network or do internships because I was too busy putting food on the table for myself and my wife, while all the rich little shits at my school went and did slave labor for no pay so they could get jobs after college. So, I'm working at a rental car company.

I fucking hate my life.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's ridiculous that businesses are allowed to capitalize on the necessary gateway experience and offer unpaid positions. I would have taken even minimum wage, but my labor isn't worth nothing.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hear you guys I end up working in a call center which had multiple contracts taking calls for minimum wage included some IT, then when I got a year experience I lied my way into a job. Most companies with outsource to call centres have to sign NDA's so when the employer checks they only get proof of employment and can varify there is a contract with an IT firm. Not what you actually did for experience. It's shady but the most effective way in. unles you know someone in the industry to get you a leg up.

Damn, you should really look for a different job. Also, look into getting CCNA certified. It takes a bit of work, but if you pass you'll have quite a bit of a better chance of getting into an entry-level tech/networking position in some other company/firm. I don't really think Network+ is regarded very highly, and A+ is just bread and butter.

I couldn't say for sure. Of the ones I speak to on a regular basis, one is working under the table at a small computer store, and another moved to California to find a job. My class was pretty small and we did a lot of lab work with specific partners, so I didn't get to know people that well.

In the UK, graduates apply for a job, and around 80 other graduates apply for it. In areas like food, manufacturing and engineering, it's over 200 per job. 70% of employers won't even look at you if you have less than a 2:1 degree.

Get this: I know a guy who, after working as a janitor for 10 years, decided to go to college part-time to get a degree. It took him 14 years to get a BA. By now, he has been mopping floors for 24 years. His employer gives him a job in the office as a communications director. After a year of this, he has announced that he is going back to mopping floors.

Holy shit man I was in the same boat as you, I wasn't about to take a job as a custodian though and after searching for about 3 months I was about to work at men's warehouse (my friends would of gotten me a job at their store pretty easily). One day the phone call came and I finally got the interview and I went to it under the mindset that it would be the last one I would get in months. I got the job and now I'm working at great company doing something I enjoy for a decent livable wage. But man OP I feel you, there are no fucking jobs anywhere for a new grads, it's a fucking mess and everyday I see the news I see these republicans doing everything they can to fuck us over even more and it just makes my blood boil. I wish I could say things will turn up and get better soon but holy shit, these midterms have me fucking scared.

The pay actually isn't bad for a shit job. I get 13.00 an hour plus a shift premium for working midnights. I also get decent health care, vacation and sick days, 401k, and the school will pay for my education if I care to take it any further. The biggest problem I have is that I am not being challenged at the workplace... it also kills me that I am working as a janitor at the place of higher education I graduated from. If that's not ironic, I don;t know what is.

[–]sidewalkchalked 25 points26 points ago

You should try to get featured in admission brochures. That, or have tour guides bring the tour past the bathrooms and introduce you as class of '0whatever.

Sorry man that sucks. I had a similar thing for a while and I didn't like it. The thing that kept me going was a good hobby at home that I eventually used to become my new job. Any hobbies you are working on?

[–]Yargyarg 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hate to break it to you but you can get a job at McDonalds near where I live for 13.50/hr.

Edit I don't know why I'm getting downvote... the minimum wage in my province is $8.80/hr and McDonalds is usually a little more than minimum wage. Besides that full time employees usually earn about .50 - 1.00 more /hr than part time employees, so I'd say at least a starting wage of about $10.00/hr for just a regular employee. Add on top of that, that you usually get a minor raise every 6 months or so (from experience), within a year, as a regular employee, you could easily be looking at about 11/hr. I also posted a link in my reply to Andybaby1 that has the job posting I was talking about when I mentioned 13.50.

[–]Yargyarg 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I obviously can't speak for the states (I assume that's where you're living), I was just making the point that McD's, at least where I live, treats their employees pretty fairly. That being said, I've heard some fucked up things about employment laws in the US so you could be getting a sweet deal. On top of that, Canada has some of the highest rates of secondary education attendance in the world, meaning that there is a surplus of blue-collared jobs.

If I were in your position I would definitely start calling around to food distribution warehouses, they usually pay pretty well and are usually unionized, meaning good employee protection. The best way to get into warehouse work is call them before Christmas time or before summer holidays, usually they're looking for relief staff for their regular employees who are taking holidays. If you can get a temporary job with a warehouse during a "peak time", you can usually bust your hump and might find yourself with a full time job that pays pretty well.

Besides all of that, I would honestly tell you to look in a different country for a job. Apply for a temp work/holiday Visa in Australia and go pick grapes or something; the thing is, you aren't going to be making any LESS money and now, before you get settled, is the best time to travel. If you're discontented in your situation, make lemonade, don't think of it as being burdened by you situation, think of it as being freed by little to no responsibility.

Seeing as this is an AMA: do you guys have interest relief on your student loans? In Canada you can seek relief from repayment of your student loans based on your situation. Lets say I couldn't get a job for 6 months after being laid off and I don't have enough money to pay the government on a monthly basis for my student loans, all I have to do is write a letter to the Loan department, they review it, and then they allow me to stop making payments and interest ceases to increment for (usually) a 6 month period. When I'm back on my feet, I can start paying again, or if I still haven't found anything, and I can prove that fact, I can write them again and they'll decide if I can stay on interest relief.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My job is unionized. I start off at 13, but it go up a dollar a year for four years, if I were to stay here, and that is in top of wage increases negotiated by the union every few years (never more than a dollar, from what I hear). I have a few other perks as well. Yes, we do have some pretty terrible labor laws. Non-unionized custodians make less money in general, and have fewer benefits if they have any at all.

I have considered going out of country, just for the sake of having a different experience, but I convinced myself that it was not pragmatic to do so. I have a feeling I will regret that decision later in life.

As far as I know, we do not have interest relief on loans. We do have loan forbearance, which is similar to what you are talking about in that payment ceases, but interest still accrues. I'm not an authority on the matter though, I opted to pay as soon as I graduated because I want to get out from underneath Salliemae's thumb.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe it is ironic. The key is that he went to this university with the expectation that it would keep him out of shit jobs, but in fact the opposite happened: it landed him a shit job.

Some things are in fact ironic.

[–]truco -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His comment was that it was ironic that he's a janitor specifically at the institution where he achieved his education. That's a coincidence, not ironic. It is ironic that he's a janitor now but that wasn't his point.

Some things are not ironic.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Under that interpretation, OK. Perhaps I read into it too much? I took the reference to the university as his evidence that there was a causal link between his decision to get his degree (and in so doing avoid a shit job) and acquiring a shit job.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You should double-check the definition of coincidence.

[–]truco 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Coincidence: a chance occurrence of events remarkable either for being simultaneous or for apparently being connected

Irony: an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Given that you invested heavily in a college education, the fact that you are now a janitor is ironic. The fact that you're now working at the institution you were educated at is not because there was no expectation that you would not work there were you to become a janitor. It is a coincidence because you and the institution have a history together.

I'm sure you have already looked around but a GREAT tech website for tons of jobs in the IT world is www.dice.com. A bunch of my friends with IT degrees from my college (I'm in Maryland) have gotten jobs from them. I have also posted my resume on their website but I don't graduate until May. But check out companies like Raytheon and Lockheed Martin or Northrop Grumman. I think they have a few positions open out in MI.

You may want to relocate to the MD/VA/DC area (which I'm sure isn't pleasing but the pay is better and but the cost of living is a little higher) but the tech jobs are much more plentiful. Plus in you get a job with the aforementioned companies you can get a security clearance with is a HUGE golden ticket to pay increases and job security. Just a career tip =)

No problem =) I always love helping out a fellow IT major. In this current economy, even though we are the ones that make the world go around (besides the engineers) we are having the most trouble finding jobs it seems. At least the ones outside of the MD/VA/DC so I don't sharing. Also check out www.monster.com and www.careerbuilder.com. I was just talking to another IT friend who graduated about a year ago and he said he got a lot of hits from them too =)

You have the degree and the smarts to get through college. Don't lose momentum and stay where you're at. I have friends who are 40 who put off life because they were demoralized and now they're screwed. They used excuses in life not to get moving again and they still thought they were 22 just out of college with the idea of "there's still time." Now they truly are screwed with a much more difficult feat of trying to change professions and going back to college. It's not impossible, but so much easier in your situation.

Dig in now and keep things going. While a college education in itself doesn't give you a job, it isn't easy getting one and does set you apart and it sounds like you paid for it all yourself which is an amazing feat. Now tap into that superpower, get out of your custodian job and keep looking for a job or go back to school on their dime and do something else. You can do it!

Use indeed.com. It pulls jobs from all the major job boards so you don't have to go to each one individually.

Security clearances are a pain in the ass, especially Top Secret. It requires a Single Scope Background Investigation with polygraph. I actually bailed after being hired for a TS job and was about to get the full raping, but I was really irked about how intrusive the SSBI is and I don't believe in the polygraph.

It's fuckin' brutal, and once you're in, you can't tell anybody what you do, where you go, and are under a constant eye. Fuck that. Anyway, good luck to you, Indeed is the way to go. I finally got a network tech job after a year out of work off that site. I'm making a third less than I was as a telecom admin for a bank that went under, but at least it's something and the benefits are good.

So its true that Michigan is out of jobs? I know somebody who move to Florida from Detroit just to get a job.

You should enjoy your work because it does not seems that bad, you go to collage parties, you can get more education for free, and the salary its enough to pay your debt.

A lot of married with children guys would kill to be so free, and not be worried everyday if the company its gonna go belly up or about getting fired, because challenge its nice, but after so much its just nasty, and all your life goes upside down.

Michigan has shit for jobs. I do recognize the perks of my job, and I know I am lucky (in a very weird sort of way), but at the same time I feel like my potential is being squandered. I just hope that I don't look back with regret when I leave for a professional career. It's nice having security. That's why I need to get one of those cushy gov't jobs.

How long did you search for a job in your degree field before applying for a custodian job? Are you still looking or pretty much given up on the idea?

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I searched in state (Michigan), for roughly 4 months before gaining full-time status at the university. I was bound by a lease, and was unsure I would be able to afford the two rents and one student loan payment that would burden me if I moved out of state. I am contemplating going back to grad school as the union I work for would pay for the classes, but I don't know if the program I am looking at would be any better than the undergrad it is an extension of.

[–]neosapien 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I searched in state (Michigan)

That's your problem right there. Michigan has one of the worst unemployment rates right now. Also, embellish your credentials in your job interview. Make up for it later when you have a job in hand with hard work.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, Michigan is a cesspool. I regret signing another lease here, because I believe if I had widened my net, I might have found something.

[–]neosapien 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Keep trying! Your field has jobs, they're just not (apparently) in Michigan. Your lease shouldn't hold you up. In my state (Minnesota), the landlord is obligated to try to rent the apartment if you give him notice. The only people that should be in your situation are people with worthless degrees like studio art or history.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I might have to look into that, but I also live with people so my circumstances may be different. Thanks!

[–]tjl2015 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look out of state. Look RIGHT NOW. The further you get from graduation, the harder it will be. Try looking in Texas, the economy is pretty good down here and there's no winter.

Don't let the lease get you down. There's an easy way around that if you find something. If you can find a job in another state, especially if it pays better, you can find a subleaser. If you get a job that pays decently more than a janitor (which shouldn't be hard), just sublease on a fire-sale.

I was in a similar situation. I graduated from Texas A&M back in May '09. I started up my masters at Purdue. It's a long story, but my research position didn't go well for me, it was not what I wanted to do and I needed to leave fast. Here I was just after New Years 201, I had to pack everything up and transfer back to A&M.

Problem was, I still had my apartment. To solve this, I just subleased it at a greatly discounted rate. For the right price, you can sell anything. My 1-bedroom apartment rent was 680/month. I put a posting on craigslist and subleased it for $450/month for the remaining 6 months of my lease.

I took a big hit, but it was worth it to me. In your case, subleasing on a fire sale would probably make you come out ahead, considering the increased pay.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've had a few people tell me it is harder to find a job the longer you wait, but I was never sure why. Is it because employers view you as being undesirable? Can you elaborate? Also, when you are talking about the fire sale, it actually puts my mind at ease. I have a three bedroom and my portion is only 250 a month.

[–]tjl2015 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're worrying about a measly $250 a month? You have to be kidding me. Sheeze, that's nothing if you start out on a decent job. Even at the janitor's pay grade, 250 a month can't be a huge portion of your income (depends on how many hours you work.) If you can find a subleaser, great. If not, who cares. You won't have any problem paying an extra $250 a month for the remainder of your Michigan lease. It will be worth it if you can get your career going.

Seriously, you need to be looking NOW though. There's a real simple reason waiting hurts you: you will be competing against the next crop of graduates. Basically, they learned the same things you did, except you haven't practiced those skills for (six months, a year, two years, etc.)

That's basically it. It doesn't mean you're not qualified. It's just that they can find someone with the same training, but without a huge time gap.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes a lot of sense. I'll buy you a beer if I get a job in Texas.

You can't find a job in an IT dept at your college? There must be a low tier spot, at least. It's easy to get one in my university b/c t's a big public university...I don't know about yours. I used to have a help desk job but a few people I know who worked with me climbed up the ladder to bigger things.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I was a student I interviewed for one, but someone a grade ahead of me got the job. They don't allow non-students to occupy these positions afaik, and the janitor gig pays more. How sad is that?

Consider earning a masters degree (if possible), or a second bachelors. I work for an institution, and while my position is Masters-required to get into, nearly everyone I work with is working on a 2nd Masters (usually an MBA) or a PhD, for free. Do whatever you can to advance yourself. I understand the situation you're in to some degree, I worked part time for my university after graduating, and was only able to get a job when I entered a grad program here (and accrued additional debt). A second degree isn't necessarily going to make you more marketable, but it can't hurt either.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the advice. I am strongly considering continuing my education, especially since it would be free, but the only thing holding me back is the issue of marketability.

An actual university. I toyed with the idea of attending a technical school, but was persuaded not to. I'm really not sure how much better off I was in attending university, although I suppose being able to continue my education is a plus.

If you want an IT/networking job you will need to look everywhere and I mean everywhere. Check hospitals, schools (public and private), small businesses, corporations, colleges/technical schools, government, government contracting, etc. You have to get creative and think about places where there could be IT jobs and not alot of applicants. That's what I did to find my job.

Have you been doing stuff like studying (like learning more about common programming languages and software used in industry), building on transferable skills (Toastmasters for communication skills, volunteer work for leadership skills), looking for part-time/temp work in your field, and/or completing more certifications as you work? Just because you're not in your ideal work environment doesn't mean you lose the ability to improve your resume, even for just a little bit.

I've actually had the experience of doing lab work as a postdoc and having the janitor comment about how utterly tedious the work looked like....and he was right, his work was probably more stimulating then a lot of the lab drudgery...I'm pretty sure he was getting better pay than most grad students too.

Good for you. Any of the profs in your department you get along with? You may be able to do some independent research or the like-- might at least get you some practical experience. Also, while janitorial work is probably less stressful, consider admin jobs. I spent several years as an admin assistant before I finally got my degree. Also, I don't know how you're doing emotionally, but I hope you know it isn't you, it's that you were born at the wrong goddamn time economically. I feel for my students; they're not going to get the same opportunities their grandparents and great-grandparents got.

[–]jabigmeanie[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I appreciate the sentiment. I've got a good grip on my situation, and I know it's not wholly my fault. I'm definitely going to be more aggressive in pursuing opportunities the second time around, whether it be working with a professor or volunteering some hours somewhere. It's going to make my life hell for a few years, but I know it will be worth it. I only wish I had realized that the road to success, or whatever you want to call it, isn't as well paved as I thought it was when I was in undergrad.

[–]bread555 -1 points0 points ago

not really sure what a MS will do for you in IT... I would cringe hiring a guy with a Masters Degree in IT whose resume went: Undergrad - poo cleaning - Masters. Honestly, look at joining the Navy/Airforce. With a degree in a technical subject you would be able to join as an officer, do a couple years, they will help pay off your student loan and you will come out with a clearance and experience.

Many grad schools in the sciences will pay your tuition and give you a stipend of ~$20,000/year. Plus, his student loans would stop accruing interest. At $13/hour, it seems like his loans are already growing faster than he can pay them down. Financially, this may not be the worst idea in the short or long term.

[–]origin415 1 point2 points ago

The people who work the shift before me are extremely lazy, and they leave everything for me to clean up. I constantly find shit dried to toilets, which is not that easy to clean up. The most constantly disgusting thing I clean is dried period blood, but the single most disgusting mess I've personally cleaned was the mess from a baby diaper someone dropped on the carpet and smeared around. I was livid, especially because it was at a large event and people stood around gawking at me.
