Running in the cold (self.Fitness)
submitted 5 months ago by DamaAgcria
What do you guys usually do when running in the cold? I feel like my lungs are being shredded apart from the air >.>
[–]DiarrheaPocket 17 points18 points19 points 5 months ago
About the only thing I've found that helps at all is putting my tongue against the roof of my mouth. I have a problem with my nose where one nostril or the other is plugged at all times so I have to breathe through my mouth in order to get enough air. Putting my tongue against the roof of my mouth helps heat the air just a bit as I inhale it. Or it might just be a placebo. Either way it helps some.

The nasal cycle is the alternating congestion and decongestion of the nasal cavities in humans. It is a physiological congestion of the nasal concha due to selective activation of one half of the autonomic nervous system by the hypothalamus. It should not be confused with pathological nasal congestion. The nasal cycle was first described by the German physician Richard Kayser in 1895.

NO EXCUSES!
[–]DamaAgcria[S] 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
Sounds simple enough! I'll have to give it a try.
[–]lizard450 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Try nasal irrigation
[–]ro_ana_maria 8 points9 points10 points 5 months ago
Like DiarrheaPocket said, keep your tongue against the roof of your mouth, it really works. I've used the trick all last winter, and started using it again now that the weather is getting cold.
There are also some running masks that cover your mouth and nose. I can't use them because I hate having anything over my face while I'm running, it makes me feel like I'm suffocating; but I see a lot of other people using them with no problems, so they might work for you.
[–]DamaAgcria[S] 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Yeah, I tried a mask the other day, but it felt terrible.
[–]ACRobb 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
It took a lot of trail and error for me to find a mask that was comfortable. But when I did, it helped quite a bit. Neoprene and other stretchy materials were too heavy and thick, fleece allowed better airflow.
I put a big emphasis on nasal breathing while running and I was getting a sort of an ice cream headache feeling running in the cold. The mask helps with that.

I used to wear a tight jumper (sweater) but that made me too hot. No matter how cold it is I just wear a t-shirt and it takes no time for my body to warm up. Obviously I don't wear JUST a t-shirt, but you get the picture, hopefully.
[–]nulledit 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
I wear JUST a big t-shirt. Works great.
[–]WeirdAndGilly 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
How cold are we talking here?
At certain temperatures any exposed skin can be a bad idea.
[–]seydar 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I'm guessing MRWJG doesn't really experience winter where it's <20°F for weeks at a time. After it's been sub-zero for a week everything else is pretty much summer, which is sweet.
[–]MRWJG 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I'm in south UK which is well above 0 most of the time -so yeh, not soooo cold but cold enough.
[–]scragpad 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I'm trying not to sound like a dick, but you must not live in a very cold place or run for very long in the cold. EDIT: or you are chewbacca.
It's probably about 6 degrees at the coldest. I'm in south UK and I only run for 20 minutes or so - it's not that cold :-) but it's cold enough.
Okay, that makes me feel a lot better, I was a little worried that I was a huge pussy for a second there. Its -2(C) here in new england and I just strapped on my 3rd layer for an hour run. :-D
hah.
[–]ninjaDOLEMITE 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
the only time of the year my treadmill sees action.
I have asthma so running in the cold triggers some nasty problems :(

Same conversation from 12 days ago: http://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/comments/muh0k/sup_just_back_from_a_morning_run_in_freezing_cold/
Might find some tips there that don't get mentioned here.
[–]Ragenori 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
I run in a hat, t shirt and shorts when it's cold. As long as it's not wet, your body gets warm about 10 minutes in. Gives me a great incentive to not stop running.
[–]razorblade2099 14 points15 points16 points 5 months ago
I'm Canadian. Try that here in about 2 weeks and see how long you last.
[–]Mr-Sagan 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
Try that in Iceland and you will not be coming back home.
[–]below66 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Apparently it's nothing for this dude.
[–]lizard450 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
that sounds like the worst idea ever. Tshirts are fucking cotton. Cotton is terrible. Either you live in an area that doesn't get cold, you don't run very far, you run at a ridiculously low intensity, or your sweat glands are fucked.
Wool base layer, and a layer on top (maybe a running jersey and shorts). Some thin gloves should do you nicely at ~35F
When you get lower than that you will want to add a thin jacket.
Avoid cotton like the plague.
[–]I_fantasize_about___ 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
It must not get very cold where you run.
[–]knave000 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I just travelled for 3 months and met loads of Europeans and Canadians. I quickly learned that the answer to "What's Melbourne like?" is not "Awesome city, gets cold though...around 2 Celsius sometimes!"
[–]scragpad 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Try to breathe through your nose a little bit more. It will help warm the air. Your lungs will also adapt to the cold to some degree after a while. You could also try loosely wrapping a thin scarf over your face, I find you get a little better airflow with that as opposed to a balaclava or soemthing. I'll run outside into the high teens (F) without too much trouble but once it gets close to 10 degrees I try to find a treadmill.

Cold has never bothered me personally, but I've heard that a brief warmup (5 - 10 minutes) indoors helps a lot. Jumping jacks, etc.
[–]pheldagriffRock Climbing (Intermediate) 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Protect your extremities (toes, fingers, and wiener) and HTFU.
[–]mkawick 5 points6 points7 points 5 months ago
Since you mention that, I have a related question. The air doesn't have to be much less that about 10° (50° f) for my ears to become painful: a 20 minute run in this temp hurts my ears a ton and causes all kinds of havoc to my eustachian tubes (ears popping, runny nose, painful inner ear).
Just a few weeks ago, I tried running with just a beret on and the tops of my ears covered (berets don't cover very much) and the improvement was astounding: no pain, no frozen ear, nothing. I couldn't cover the whole ear, but that minor covering made a huge difference.
Is there any other better way to help with this problem?
[–]HuggableBear 7 points8 points9 points 5 months ago
Covering your ears won't really fix this. It's not your ears that are actually all that cold. It's your sinus cavities/eustachian tubes, etc. Breathing the cold air is the real problem. You and the OP should go scarf shopping together.
[–]nulledit 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Ear muffs.

upvoted you, the beret is probably the best option unless you prefer a whole beanie.
[–]abeuntstudiainmores 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
running in GA never really gets that cold... reading these comments makes me glad of that fact...
[–]AlphaOfUrOmega 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I've run in Chicago for years. The first week or so when it gets cold is miserable and your lungs WILL hurt, there's not much you can do about it. But after that week, your body will get used to the cold air and it won't be a problem.
Sounds like you're breathing through your mouth. Stop that and breathe through your nose.
[–]DamaAgcria[S] 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
This seems so simple but it's extremely hard. My nose is always stuffed up so it feels like i'm breathing through a straw :(
[–]lizard450 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Nasal irrigation. Do it regularly. Over the years my nose has become much healthier because of it and I do it before every race. Also shave your nose hairs.
[–]medic914 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
more than 20 degrees F but less than 40 i wear shorts, compression undershirt, longsleeve tech shirt.
If it gets colder usually less than 20F, I wear regular old sweatpants, longsleeve compression tee, and maybe a tech hoodie, and a balaclava like one pictured here to keep the dry cold air from burning my lungs.
[–]Cyric1972 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
what do most people wear when running in the cold. I live in Houston so cold to me is 20s-40s. I am about to start running at our local park but being in a warm weather area I have no cold weather work out clothes. I will have to see how the cold effects my breathing when I do a cold weather run. its in the 70s here now so no worries on cold weather running, but we tend to go from the 70s to 30s and 40s and back all the time.
I know for all the people in places that are actually cold this probably sounds like summer weather :)
[–]gwerst 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Any wheezes?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
I wear one of those neck things- don't know what it's called but mines a black pull over from the running room, its not really thick but it protects the face and neck and has breathing mesh that lets you breath easily + warm air.
also: lemons, suck on them before running and your throat won't hurt so much :) (I guarantee you)
Edit: just went for a run in -15 weather btw.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago
Don't focus on the pain, and don't focus on not focusing on the pain. Just pay attention to your scenery, or visualize that nice cup of hot chocolate you're going to treat yourself to after the run. After a while you'll hopefully get used to the feeling.
