PREMISE:

Wanted ultralight backpacking sauce mix made at home instead of overpriced Knorr crap.

METHOD:

Milk powder+corn starch= instant Bechamel sauce mix?

RESULT:

Milk powder+corn starch= instant Elmer's School Glue.

That sounds handy.

I didn't feel like this warranted its own post so I'll leave it as a comment here.

When I was a kid I decided that I was going to make custard (like the filling of custard pie). I mixed eggs, sugar, milk and vanilla together and stuck it in the fridge. I thought it would set like how Jello does.

It didn't. My mom laughed at me.

When we were little my sisters and I figured we could make bread by mixing flour and water and putting it in the toaster oven. Nope. We did succeed in making a huge mess though.

I have a spectacular failed chicken curry attempt. Photo logged and everything!

Hmm, I have a few good stories. I'll try to take pictures of my macarons attempt tomorrow--and we'll see if I need a Fail or Success tag. :)

Pierogi.

I used to make them once or twice a year. They were always okay, but I hadn't found the right dough recipe and was always trying new ones. After reading a few different food blogs, I decided to try to work some wheat flour into the dough.

I'd never made a batch that I didn't finish, so I made like 6 dozen of them, three different fillings, all by myself, took hours, huge mess.

They were inedible. I hate wasting food so I tried to eat them a few times, but I just ended up peeling away the dough and eating the filling. I haven't tried making them since.

I'm making Roti Canai right now and I have a feeling it is going to be a failed recipe. The instructions asked for 10 oz flour, 1/2 cup ghee, 1/2 cup water but only mention 1/4 cup of the ghee in the actual instructions.

btw if you like sausage making check out /r/charcuterie

When you try something new in a breadmaker, avoid the temptation to make avocado bread. You'll end up with a green doorstopper which is only 1/3 height of the supposed bread and completely inedible.

(I added one avocado to the dough.)

I got some kind of empanada recipe from a magazine. I wanted to cook these empanadas for my boyfriend's birthday. They were simple enough: 2 cups of shredded chicken breast, 2 Tbsp of Cilantro, and 12 oz of Velveeta Cheese mixed together in a bowl. Make little pockets out of two pie crusts (fold them into half-circles) and add some chili powder if desired to the top of them and put in the oven for 15 minutes on 375.

I'm not exactly sure what happened. The first half came out ok, but they tasted like blah. They didn't really have any flavor.

I put the second batch in, and five minutes later I smell smoke. I think this was an oven malfunction of some sort (since my bf's oven is really REALLY bad most of the time), but the second batch caught on fire. Yeah....

Boyfriend still ate them. He said they were delicious but I knew he was pretending. (So sweet! :D). At least I made him 6 other things so he wasn't forced to eat all of those things.
