since there seems to be a disturbing lack of ethnic food in SLO city on this list...

thai classic downtown next to firestones! they do not mess around with the spiciness levels, and they're cheaper (and more authentic) than thai palace.

shalimar out on broad is the best indian place in SLO hands down. order something other than the chicken tikka masala. it's good, but their vindaloos are WAY better. also lots of vegetarian options!

[–]mrsushisushi 3 points4 points ago

try thai boat!

[–]michelementMathematics - 2012 0 points1 point ago

the one in morro bay? i've been there a couple times, and it's reeeeally good. just a bit far from me and i don't like driving. sigh

[–]couchmeister 1 point2 points ago

good thing they've moved to Broad street a while back :D

[–]michelementMathematics - 2012 1 point2 points ago

welp, i know what i'm eating tomorrow! :D

[–]mrsushisushi 0 points1 point ago

awww yeah!

[–]ManginIsGod 0 points1 point ago

The place is usually packed.. Apparently a genius location to open a Thai Restaurant @ Broad and Orcutt.. A really money location, and when they keep the prices relatively low, like they have, while still producing very tasty dishes, they are going to keep a very loyal customer base.

[–]ManginIsGod 2 points3 points ago

Agree, Thai Classic downtown is really great Thai food. Go for lunch though, much better value than dinner. For a cheaper Dinner, Thai boat is ok, but not quite the same level of quality.

Also, agree with Shalimar, a really great Indian Restaurant, and the family that runs it is very friendly and welcoming.

Other good restaurants: Creekside has great food (The Oakhurst sandwich or whatever) is just a great brisket sandwich, which comes with a salad or soup. About 8 bucks, awesome.

[–]JeffTDPolitical Science - 2013 2 points3 points ago

Yes to both of these. Shalimar is my motherfucking JAM.

[–]ManginIsGod 0 points1 point ago

Get a Union Jack with the buffet and.. yeah.

[–]JeffTDPolitical Science - 2013 0 points1 point ago

I'm not even sure what that is, but there's a certain irony in an Indian restaurant serving anything called a Union Jack.

[–]ManginIsGod 0 points1 point ago

Yes, yes there is. Actually feel kind of like a colonialist ordering it, but it goes great with the sag paneer and tikka.

[–]FrrostyBearBiological Sciences - 2013 0 points1 point ago

I would argue that Taj Palace is better, but hey, we're all white, so we don't actually have any expertise in this. It's just a matter of preference, but the owner there looks like an aged Benny Lava and is really nice.

[–]stayhomeGraphic Communications - 2014 2 points3 points ago

My roommate is full Indian, and Taj Palace is his go-to around here. I happily trust his judgement.

[–]Jobact 1 point2 points ago

Minor bun engine?

[–]aRelavantUserNameSocial Sciences - 2011 0 points1 point ago

That's Indian food

[–]FrrostyBearBiological Sciences - 2013 0 points1 point ago

I refuse to disagree with you. I meant to refer to Shalimar. didn't...

[–]corevetteSoftware Engineering - 2013 17 points18 points ago

Not really in SLO city, but Sylvester's in Atascadero and Los Osos has delicious burgers. Additionally in Los Osos there's Noi's Little Thai Takeout for great Thai food

[–]couchmeister -1 points0 points ago

I went to Noi's based on their raved reviews since Thai is my favorite food, I felt that they had horrible food. No flavor and very few options, very Americanized. Thai boat is probably one of the better Thai places in SLO, and there's supposed to be some good ones in AG I have yet to try

[–]ManginIsGod 1 point2 points ago

Nois is really hit or miss.. some of their dishes are amazing, others are duds.. really should find one you like, and stick with the day they offer it.

[–]dangeroComputer Engineering - 2005 5 points6 points ago

It's not SLO proper, but I recommend Jocko's in Nipomo if you want the best Filet Mignon you'll ever have in your life. It's pretty cheap too. Good date place for a little out of the way adventure.

Breakfast Buzz is hard to beat in the morning.

[–]hailchristian 1 point2 points ago

Jocko's is amazing. Best steak house in the area if you ask me.

[–]stayhomeGraphic Communications - 2014 2 points3 points ago

Kona's Deli has my favorite sandwiches in town. Everything's really fresh, and the bread itself is amazing, too. Right next to SLO Textbooks, in that same structure.

There, and Taj Palace's lunch buffet is pretty good, too, if you like Indian food. Simple choices, but it's good. They're across from Bali's and Pita Pit on Foothill.

[–]mwaxWine & Viticulture - 2012 2 points3 points ago

I work at Kona's, love to hear the positive feedback!!

[–]stayhomeGraphic Communications - 2014 2 points3 points ago

Props to you and the other guys/girls there! Everyone's always really nice, and I've never been given a sandwich that was less than great. Keep it up.

[–]k4tertotsAgribusiness - 2012 1 point2 points ago

wait give me a free sando

[–]mwaxWine & Viticulture - 2012 4 points5 points ago*

JAFFA! Hands down the best EDIT: Mediterranean food place near Higuera and Toro

[–]sjshaolianArchitectural Engineering - 2013 11 points12 points ago

Firestone has the best tri tip sandwich by far

[–]corevetteSoftware Engineering - 2013 6 points7 points ago*

More than anything, the BBQ sauce is crack. Put it on anything and it will be good

TIP: You can ask for extra BBQ sauce that comes in a small separate plastic container

[–]Worthy_Avatar 0 points1 point ago

I have found Firestone's tri-tip to chewy. I think McClintocks has a better tri-tip. More tender.

[–]ExtremeZarfComputer Science - 2013 3 points4 points ago

Sylvester's in Los Osos is delicous. The Chile Peppers by the train station in SLO is way different from the one on foothill, and also way more delicious. IMO the best pizza comes from Pizza Solo, but a lot of people know about there. For a sit-down dinner, you can't beat Novo in downtown. The creekside seating is great for dates too.

[–]deku12345Computer Science - 2011 3 points4 points ago

Thai Boat. Tom and Paul are awesome servers and the food is amazing. Also the G Bros breakfast is surprisingly decent for its price. Cool Cat Cafe down on broad is a pretty good burger place. Their Western Burger is pretty great. And going to throw one more vote for Creekside. I love their beers.

Man, now I'm really missing SLO.

[–]mwaxWine & Viticulture - 2012 1 point2 points ago

I 100% agree with G Bros! Especially the $1 tacos $1 beer deal they have mon-fri 3-5. So good, such good quality for the price

[–]tonycerealMathematics - 2012 3 points4 points ago

Anyone who hasn't been to Tacos de Acapulco (on Laurel Lane) is seriously missing out. It's definitely my favorite Mexican place in SLO.

Others I love include High Street Deli, Lincoln Deli, Chino's, Cafe Roma, Chilie Peppers, The Shack, and Sylvester's out in Los Osos.

[–]ManginIsGod 0 points1 point ago

I seriously got food poisoning there, and their food is seriously overpriced.

Chili Peppers on Broad may not look the cleanest, but I've been eating there for 15 years and never have had food poisoning, plus I think their food is better, even though quality has gone down in the last 3-4 years.. still the best on the south side of town IMO.

That said, right next door to Tacos de Acapulco is the SLO Fresh Market I think it's called- They are great people, the lady who runs it is awesome, and they make custom sandwiches- you also can get a punch card- so you get a free sandwich every now and then. It's a great, smaller, local market to support.

[–]tonycerealMathematics - 2012 0 points1 point ago

Shoot, that sucks about the food poisoning. I used to live right on Augusta and Laurel so that little shopping center was a two-minute walk; I ate there many times and never got food poisoning nor heard of anyone else getting it :/ That market next door is really awesome though.

Broad St. Chili Peppers is good too, but I've only eaten there twice and both times it wasn't really so remarkable that I had to return. To each his own I guess.

[–]AkimboGogurtsPsychology - 2015 6 points7 points ago

Well, I have some what of a HABIT you might say.

ITS A HABIT FORMING RESTAURANT.

[–]smithandjohnsonComputer Science - 2004 6 points7 points ago

Haven't even visited in awhile... is Firestones not still around? If it is, how can you not have mentioned it?

[–]AlarminPolitical Science - 2012[S] 3 points4 points ago

Haha read the post man

[–]smithandjohnsonComputer Science - 2004 0 points1 point ago

God DAMN I missed that. GG, OP... gee gee...

[–]therantingnorwegianComputer Science - 2013 3 points4 points ago

Still here, still a big deal.

[–]pinkpeony 2 points3 points ago

I thought Eureka burger was hyped up, but the items I have had were pretty good, but pricy. Mama's Meatball has the best crack... errr... garlic bread balls. Cafe Roma is more authentic and tasty I think.

Side note on Custom House, you can order food through Mr. Ricks if the line seems ridiculous. Also Thai Bounty is owned by Noi's sister in Morro Bay (OMG... Pad Kee Mow is my favorite!).

[–]GalacticFisherEconomics - 2013 2 points3 points ago

Jaffa Cafe. I love me some Mediterranean food.

[–]fradra9 2 points3 points ago

The Shack and Splash are the only restaurants that matter.

[–]abaddono1Computer Science - 2012 0 points1 point ago*

Los Osos: Noi's, Sylvester's, 10th street grill, Jimmy Bump's Pasta House

Morro Bay: Taco's De Mexico (not the other 2).

San Luis: Sumo Sushi, Thai Boat, Upper Crust, Mo's, Thairific, Cool Cats Cafe.

Pismo: Fat Cats, Splash Cafe.

Edit formating, wow didn't check my work :(

[–]tonycerealMathematics - 2012 0 points1 point ago

Haha I used to work for Jimmy Bump, he's a funny dude.

[–]abaddono1Computer Science - 2012 0 points1 point ago

I never met him. The 2 waitresses that work there are really nice though.

[–]ChocolateEClaireSoftware Engineering - 2014 1 point2 points ago

Now I am hungry :(

[–]AlarminPolitical Science - 2012[S] 0 points1 point ago

Now I'm hungry and there's 7000 new places to choose from :(

[–]ChocolateEClaireSoftware Engineering - 2014 0 points1 point ago

Then let's go get something to eat! check your reddit mail.

[–]JeffTDPolitical Science - 2013 0 points1 point ago

Moe's has some ridiculously good burgers + pork meals and the sweet tea is like drinking diabetes.

[–]earthDF 0 points1 point ago

Chili Peppers. Not the chain one but this one (i think) 2121 Broad Street San Luis Obispo, CA 93401-5204

I find it to be delicious

[–]FrrostyBearBiological Sciences - 2013 1 point2 points ago

Taco Temple in Morro Bay is my current favorite. Tacos are gargantuan and reasonably priced, burritos are supposedly heavenly. It's like 10 minutes north on the 1 of the North Entrance (Highland @ Santa Rosa) of Cal Poly.

Taj Palace is solid, Monday Buffet is grandiose, particularly whilst lit like a tit.

The Shack has some pretty solid burglers. Sylvester's is overrated.

Natural Cafe is interesting. Carrot Milkshake was a winner for me.

[–]vCtrlAltDelvComputer Science - 2014 0 points1 point ago

One of my favorites is The Galley in Morro Bay. It's expensive, but it's right on the water, has a great atmosphere inside, and I've always had a really fantastic meal.

[–]preruntumbler 0 points1 point ago

Eureka. New burger/beer place. great atmosphere, upbeat people and the food is super good. Go there!

[–]hailchristian -1 points0 points ago

My friends and I have been on a Kreuzberg fixation for the last few weeks. Decently priced meals, breakfast all day and a very unique atmosphere.

We went to Raku a few weeks ago. Very good food, little on the steep side of the wallet scale.

Eureka burger is good, especially if you are a beer fan. They have about 30 craft beers on tap. Food is good, but IMO not worth the price.

Laguna grill on LOVR and Madonna is a much better bang for the buck if you are looking for a sports bar. I prefer their food over Firestone's.

edit: Firestone bbq mixed with ranch...unbeatable.

[–]Dog_from_Duckhunt 1 point2 points ago

I'm only going to mention places that haven't been thus far:

Gus's Grocery for sandwiches in SLO

Taco Temple in Morro Bay

The Smokehouse in Cayucos (bit of a drive, but fucking AMAZING smoked tacos - fish/pork)

saved the best for last:

Nardonnes Pizza in Atascadero is the best fucking pizza you will ever have. They are expensive, don't deliver and they take about an hour to make your pizza but I'll be damned if I've ever found better pizza. Get 4-6 friends, call ahead and plan to eat it there. Fucking delicious.

[–]vinyl_keyComputer Science - 2013 0 points1 point ago

Taco Temple...omg, so freakin delicious. Calamari appetizer is to die for.

[–]r3tryBiomedical Engineering - 2012 0 points1 point ago

Sally Loo's! Super great food and coffee, right next to train station, good for coffee dates and what not. http://www.sallyloos.com/

[–]r3tryBiomedical Engineering - 2012 0 points1 point ago

(Cons: a bit expensive)

[–]alanaisallamaAerospace Engineering - 2015 1 point2 points ago

Vista Grande Cafe, it's at the corner of Klamath and Deer. They have a really wide variety of food too, like pasta, burgers, burritos, and waffles.

[–]stayhomeGraphic Communications - 2014 4 points5 points ago

Nice try, campus dining.
