this photograph of a severely burnt soldier with his new wife is also horribly depressing.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

I think the saddest part is her not smiling and him seeming to recognize this. That's what kills me.

Without clicking, I think I know what you're referring to. If not, last time I was at the Museum of Modern Art, there was a series of photographs documenting a severly burned soldier and his new wife. The photos detailed a few months between them, and then she eventually drops out of sight. You find out that they eventually separated after being married for less than a year.

I'm not surprised. Their future is so apparent by the looks on their faces, which is what adds to the utter sadness of this photograph. I don't know what I would do in either of their situations.

[–]bendemolina 10 points11 points ago

Yeah, it was a really harrowing series of images. Even in their wedding photograph she's just so unsettled and frayed-looking. It's readily apparent that she loves him but she just never looks okay around him. She constantly looks like she wants to shrink away, which, while it's sad to see, I totally get it. You really feel for both of them. It's a really tough situation, obviously.

The position of his head alone is killing me.

[–]Nackles 1 point2 points ago

Do you know what happened to the man? Has he been rebuilding his life, did he withdraw into himself, etc.?

[–]bendemolina 2 points3 points ago

You know, I'm not actually sure. Also-- just kidding, it was the Whitney Biennial in 2010, not MoMA. Nina Berman is the photographer. http://whitney.org/Exhibitions/2010Biennial/NinaBerman

http://www.ninaberman.com/marine-wedding - These are the photos that were on display. They divorced in 2006.

Jesus fucking Christ.

[–]PointlessAdvice 1 point2 points ago

Well, ain't that some shit.

[–]Nackles 2 points3 points ago

Oh my gosh...my heart is breaking. I won't be able to get that man out of my thoughts.

[–]wilu 2 points3 points ago

:(

(His name is Sgt. Ty Ziegel. I looked, and can't find any news about him past the divorce a few years ago. I hope he's doing well.)

Holy fuck man. I have strong political beliefs about our military and I'm always the first to start bashing soldiers due to my belief in the difference following orders and doing what's right, but goddamn this is fucking sad. Seeing the look in their eyes of no happy future in sight is so fucking sad. This picture got me man.

the photographer of this photograph eventually committed suicide.

and here is a photograph of two parents once they realized that their toddler was just swept out into the ocean.

[–]setthecontrols92 5 points6 points ago

I'm glad to see at least one person doing it right.

It feels mildly inappropriate to say thank you for the links, but uh. Thank you for the links.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

FYI, the photographer of the first picture didn't commit suicide because of that picture.

[–]HarleyQ 0 points1 point ago

Didn't he commit suicide because of the comments later made about him taking the picture? If I remember right someone was quoted saying "there were two vultures circling the boy." him being the other.

[–]fecalmatter 7 points8 points ago

it was a comic about a young girl being raped by her daddy and so she couldn't play pirates with her rabbit toy.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

I think this is what you're referring to? http://i.imgur.com/1hfcN.gif

[–]rawrslagithor 5 points6 points ago

I could have gone my whole life without seeing that...

[–]fecalmatter 2 points3 points ago

exactly

[–]HarleyQ 0 points1 point ago

There's just something about these that I don't quite get or understand. Yes, I know it's an awful subject, but the way the little girl is portrayed is confusing. Is she' 5 with the mind and intelligence of a 15 year old? I don't understand why someone would portray the girl in such a manner and not as a child acting and feeling as a child would.

I THINK that's what is bothering me about how it reads, aside from the subject matter obviously.

[–]jigby61 1 point2 points ago

So that's what happened. I saw that yesterday and I wasn't quite sure what happened to her.

Good god this shit is depressing....

[–]jigby61 1 point2 points ago

That was disturbing.

[–]bendemolina 4 points5 points ago

Not the most depressing, but certainly very sad

At first you think perhaps she's veiled, like some sort of madonna, or a beautiful creature out of a story. But it turns out she's a young Afghani bride who set herself on fire, and gauze has been draped over her wounded face to keep the flies off.

She's only one in a series documented by Stephanie Sinclair.

I don't have time to be depressed, I'm going to Disney world tommorow!
