What are some not so well known, but common and easy to get jobs? (self.AskReddit)
submitted 3 months ago by tibsalot
More of jobs people don't usually think of, but are entry level jobs?
[–]IchTuDerWeh 1145 points1146 points1147 points 3 months ago
Overnight awake shiftworker, 13 bucks and hour and all you do is go on reddit all night
[–]Urban_Savage 246 points247 points248 points 3 months ago
I've been in the night audit circle for about 4 years, love it. But even before that I worked 3rd shift jobs, just look for anything open after 1am, but you have to apply during daylight hours. The average person just cannot work night shift, so night shift jobs are harder to fill, and easier to get.
[–]eastlondonmandem 696 points697 points698 points 3 months ago*
I had a job working in a datacenter. It was brand new and there weren't any servers to even look after. They were kind enough to supply a nice sofa.
The night shifts were the easiest, come in and sleep, wake up go home. The day shifts were a fucking BORE.
Still...gigabit connectivity meant I downloaded shit all day, I even used to come to work with my xbox 360 and play Forza online all day.
edit: I forgot to say that they also provided those mini push scooters for getting around because it was so big. If you've never tried one of these things on a super smooth floor... well it's just AMAZING. One push and you are literally gliding forever.
[–]will7 474 points475 points476 points 3 months ago
That... sounds beautiful.
[–]alienangel2 220 points221 points222 points 3 months ago
Actually sounds like the best possible job at any datacenter ever. Arrive, sleep while downloading, go out and enjoy your day. I wish I could have spent my vacation doing that job.
[–]jeffprobst 25 points26 points27 points 3 months ago
Don't forget the video games!
[–][deleted] 69 points70 points71 points 3 months ago
I work in a datacenter at a banking software company. Around Christmas time every year we go into a freeze, meaning we can't do anything to risk an outage.
During that time, we also bring in our XBOX 360s and play COD with each other. Best time of year :)
[–]Slapthatbass84 257 points258 points259 points 3 months ago
I can attest to that... hehehe
[–]conffra 286 points287 points288 points 3 months ago
i used to work the night shift in a newspaper's website. There was a lot of reddit and almost no work going on. That is, until some drunk guy would drive into a river, or some mayor in whateversville would die, then it's news time.
[–]Bugloaf 261 points262 points263 points 3 months ago
When I read, "then it's news time", the "Adventure Time" theme song started running in my head. Thanks.

911 dispatcher here, proudly serving my community with reddit mobile in hand.
[–]Worlds_Best_Coffee 337 points338 points339 points 3 months ago
In 2009 I was unemployed and tested really well for this job but never took it over fears of listening to someone die.
[–]Red_Dwarf 460 points461 points462 points 3 months ago
Not for everyone, but everything becomes muscle memory and instinct over time. Until then it can be rough. But with experience all you'll care about is the information you know you need, and you'll know how to get it.
I had a guy, completely wasted with a stab wound to the abdomen. He had no clue where he was and he was vomiting. Don't you know I felt so good after our guys got to him. I'm the fucking Montgomery Scott of dispatch sometimes. Miracles, miracles everywhere.

[–]Helen_A_Handbasket 202 points203 points204 points 3 months ago
That's what made me quit working as a 911 dispatcher. When you get a six year old kid on the phone asking how to make his baby brother stop crying from hunger because his drug-OD'd mom "has been sleeping for two days and won't wake up", or when you get the call from a frantic daughter whose dad has collapsed in the locked bathroom, and hear her finding him dead on the floor after she manages to break the door open...
...yeah. I admire those who can do it, but I only lasted a couple years before it started to make me soulless. It paid really well, but some things aren't worth the money.
[–]ineedateam1 22 points23 points24 points 3 months ago
well thank for the time that you did serve..its a mentally demanding job
[–]jumalaw 53 points54 points55 points 3 months ago
Oh shit, we could use the world's best coffee overnight, too. That sucks. I hope you're better off now.
[–]heymrk 161 points162 points163 points 3 months ago
I used to work as an overnight warrant processor for my city's municipal court.
It constituted a little bit of filing, but mainly answering the telephone promptly.
I did a lot of reading. The reason I don't work there anymore is because the office administrator believed the main focus of the job was filing from the day. She convinced the daytime staff that it was my responsibility to do their filing. Not one of them did their own filing after that. And if you've ever tried to pay a speeding ticket in person, you know what a clusterfuck that can be.
But if I was in the back filing, I couldn't hear the phone ring when then police officers were calling for confirmation of warrants on a suspect. Then the cops out on the street got mad.
The magistrates, who really controlled my job, were furious with her when she ran me off for not spending every waking moment at that job doing other peoples' work.
Now her husband is the police chief and her brother in law is state Department of Transportation secretary. Everyone's too terrified to fuck with her.
[–]malikb979 65 points66 points67 points 3 months ago
What a dick. It always sucks when someone tries to screw with the engineering of work environments. Developing a working combination of jobs is difficult and some people just don't see it.
[–]ksforpedro 15 points16 points17 points 3 months ago
So the job consisted of filing and answering the phone, yet they couldn't put a phone in the room with all the files?

Any place you can imagine that has to stay open 24 hours like a hotel. Someone has to be available for people.
[–]NovaeDeArx 140 points141 points142 points 3 months ago
However, you deal with a lot of crazies.
This is more desirable in rural areas (not much going on at night) vs. urban (drugs, crime and crazies all go through the roof at night).
[–]ANewMachine615 151 points152 points153 points 3 months ago
Provided, of course, you're OK being alone in a giant, quiet hotel at night in the middle of nowhere...

[–]JaggyMonster 71 points72 points73 points 3 months ago
That is the most fucking terrifying thing.
[–]Rislyeu 29 points30 points31 points 3 months ago

This. I recently (2 months ago) got a job as night auditor at a fairly upscale hotel in a busy college town. I usually finish my work around 2 or 3 a.m. and just surf reddit for 10.50/hr. It's just a temporary job until I go back to school this summer, but it pays the bills.
It was quite easy to get. For these positions, the managers are usually looking for someone with very open availability and someone who can use commom sense and hold down the fort by themselves. Hope this helps!
btw, I had no prior hotel experience before I landed the job.
[–]hawaiiandave 560 points561 points562 points 3 months ago*
Treeplanting, pinecone collecting, soil sample collector, all those jobs will eventually pay 300+ a day but are hard as hell. No experience necessary. You can also go to literally any farm and they will always have work. It will be minimum wage, but if you go in the spring/summer you can do the berry - or whatever they are growing - picking and make like 200 a day or so depending on how hard you work.
Edit: To clarify, it's minimum wage, BUT berry picking is piece rate. Which means if you work your hardest, you can pull that kind of skrill. I know this stuff because I experience it first hand every year, not because I'm talking out my ass.
[–]Zerunai 435 points436 points437 points 3 months ago
soil sample collector
As a person who had semi permanent casual work for 6 months doing this I can say best job ever, $25 an hour, always outside, always talking, 4wd'ing through muddy paddocks.
also farmers are all bros.
[–]atheist_verd 163 points164 points165 points 3 months ago
How do you become a soil sample collector? Because I would love that.
[–]OIP 1033 points1034 points1035 points 3 months ago
Just grab some soil! Boom, you're doing it.
[–]ne99ne 523 points524 points525 points 3 months ago
First, enroll in the Soil Collecting Technician course at your local Sandford Brown or other quality educational institution. This will get you the coveted title of Certified Soil Collecting Technician.
You're gonna get laid. A lot.
[–]eirttik23 431 points432 points433 points 3 months ago
I googled Soil Collecting Technician and basically your post came up.

I tried tree planting and let me tell you. The OP is right, but missed something. You MIGHT eventually make money. It's an extremely physically and mentally laborious job.
Here's a typical day where I worked
--The generator starts at 4:00 am so you know that you have one hour left to sleep. Did I mention you sleep in tents (Even as soon as the end of May)? Goes well below 0 some nights and even snows
--Crawl your ass out of a sleeping bag into maybe subzero temperatures and grab a plate and line up outside a small trailer that serves you breakfast. The meals were actually pretty damn good. Take your food to a huge army tent with benches and eat with the other 100 people. You have 30 minutes.
--Once you're finished, start getting your gear for the day. This includes a few apples and sandwiches, clean water, bug spray, tree bags / shovel. Weed if you need it to get through the day.
--Load onto the bus for 6am and start driving to "the block". Sometimes these can be 15 minutes away or 1 hour away, so the LATEST you will arrive to the block is 7am
--Once there, your crew boss tells you where to flag off a piece of land and start planting. That's it...you're pretty much alone for the rest of the day.
--You load up about 25 lb of trees in each of two bags around your waist and start planting. If the trees are wet because it rained the night before, add 20 lb.
--Now it's maybe 7:30. Now plant in lines for 11-12 hours straight. Slice shovel into ground, do a "C" cut to unearth a flap of land and take a tree out of your bag and guide it into the "C" fold and step on it to cover it up. Your hand gets cut RAW from doing this. Most people duct tape their hands to cover the wounds / prevent new ones. Also to get a nice bit of land to plant, it's almost always required to "screef" the land before, which means sliding your foot across the ground to get rid of the junk and expose soil. Your toe will go numb for days at a time. And from slamming your shovel into the ground 3000 times a day, you get something we called "The claw", where your hand wants to stay in a claw shape and not move.
Did I mention that all through this you will be attacked by black flies so thick they block out the sun and look for any crevice to get into? We sprayed a guys white hard hat with bug spray one day and by the end of the shift it was solid black in black fly carcasses. Also the weather may get to 35C or as low as 0. depending on the month.
--After you're finished the shift, you can barely walk, so you stumble back onto the bus once people's shit is in order, sometimes not until 7pm and get back to camp at 7:30-8pm, scarf down a pretty good meal, pass out from exhaustion and listen for the dreaded sound of the generator again.
I don't recommend this job to anyone unless they hate themselves. I came back 40 lb lighter, didn't shower for 20 days straight and felt like someone living in a post apocalyptic tribe, slowly turning back into savages.
How much did I make?
I was paid 6 cents a tree and after about 2 months I made $2000? A calculated it like working for $5 an hour. Of course, there was training and other BS in there, also had to train to get my speed up. I would imagine I could double that if I worked the following season. I knew guys that could plant 6,000 trees a day though and made $400 in a single shift. The thing is, all the good veterans get the easier plots of land and the rookies get the shit with rocks and logs everywhere. The people who were really good seemed to be seriously flawed as human beings though...just like really depressed and almost wanted to go crazy to forget about their lives for a day. It's what I noticed.
Here's a before and after photo. I look like I should weigh more, but I was about 190lb +- 5lb before and 155lb after? If you want to get in amazing shape, this does it.
before after --fixed mens health links. I posted them there and they just happened to still be hosted. Imgur links now
Topless man pics...warning

That actually sounds pretty cool. I wouldn't want to do that full time... but one month a year sounds like it would fill out my chest hair a bit.
[–]sdotmiller 88 points89 points90 points 3 months ago
I did the exact same thing. You would literally have to be a severe masochist to enjoy it. I am incredibly physically fit and consider myself mentally tough; however that job did wear on me greatly after a couple weeks, let alone a few months.

Pinecone collecting is easy as shit. Bend down, pick up pinecone, put in bag, repeat.
[–]splitwheel 332 points333 points334 points 3 months ago
i just cut out a third of your job
[–]bremma 90 points91 points92 points 3 months ago
Those things are essential to not kill your back. I used to pick up pine cones in my parent's yard before they'd mow it, and if I couldn't find the grabber, pine cone duty sucked.
[–]super_god 107 points108 points109 points 3 months ago
You should not bend down to pick anything up. Always practice safe lifting techniques, even with a pinecone.
[–]anechoicche 121 points122 points123 points 3 months ago

Let me add "restoration technician" to that list - I started last summer at 140/day, and it was fun as hell. Ecological restoration: digging holes, planting trees, operating machinery, and playing around in creeks.

Overnight janitorial work. A lot of Americans forgot about this line of work. And the part-time extra income is a blessing in this economy. The companies that steer away from janitorial services and hire individuals would love a young English speaking person.
[–]dvdvndk 383 points384 points385 points 3 months ago
I cleaned car dealerships in college. No one looking over your shoulder and good pay. I dreamed about being in IT now I dream about being a janitor again.

[–]irrationalNumber 28 points29 points30 points 3 months ago
I used to love technology. I've been doing tech support for about 5 years and hate it now. I still enjoy tinkering at home, but I despise doing it for a living. Mostly because of people. People are really stupid and VERY demanding, especially over things that they don't understand. And it's impossible to explain yourself to demanding people who have no concept of how computers or networking work. EVERYONE thinks you are lying to them and no one wants to pay you for your work.
When you love technology, you think IT would be fun. But it really, really isn't.
[–]Isbjorn 31 points32 points33 points 3 months ago
I feel the same way about farm work sometimes. I get paid about 25 times more now, but work-life was simple then.
Paying bills... not as much. :(
[–]furbait 34 points35 points36 points 3 months ago
some days a cleaning job just seems like such a nice zen solution to the whole damn thing. The universe isn't waiting breathlessly for me to reveal new wisdom or make massive creative strides, fuck it, just sweep.
[–]h0ser 1855 points1856 points1857 points 3 months ago
I know a guy who went door to door with a drill in his pocket. He'd knock on the door and when someone would open up he'd pull out a drill and say "What if this was a gun, wouldn't it be nice to have a peep hole so you see who is out here before you open up. For fourty dollars and five minutes of your time I'll put a peephole in your door that will give you added security and peace of mind for the rest of your days." He had his own business a few years later is is living large today.
[–]mistergreekster 1438 points1439 points1440 points 3 months ago
what if you peep through the hole and somebody drills your eye? thatd be cool
[–]failparty 590 points591 points592 points 3 months ago

I laughed out loud at this, and then I thought, "He's lucky no one shot him."
[–]LittleGoatyMan 487 points488 points489 points 3 months ago
Well, in the real version of the story, the drill actually was a gun, and instead of the sales pitch, he just shot the homeowner, and instead of his own business, he was electrocuted by the state.
[–]porwegiannussy 272 points273 points274 points 3 months ago
The author really took some liberties.
[–]kalmakka 444 points445 points446 points 3 months ago
But it is really difficult to tell if someone has a drill or a gun through a peephole. What if they install the peephole and stop opening the door to strangers who have drills or other gun-like objects in their pockets? Think of all the amazing and potentially life-saving opportunities they might miss out on?
[–]phpwebdev 537 points538 points539 points 3 months ago

You could have a peep hole at crotch level too, for added security.

Aiding disabled, a lot of people wont do it because some of the stuff you have to do is "gross".
I don't quite know how it works in other countries, but in Denmark where I live you can easily get this kind of job, and if you're really lucky you get one person who needs 24/7 help, so you only need like 6 watches a month to make a full sallery (that's my job btw, and the disabled person also happens to be my best friend).
Most of the time they don't need you if they are just physically handicapped, so you can browse, read, watch movies, whatever the fuck you want, it's a jolly time for all.

English Teacher in a large city in China (Beijing, Kunming, Xi'an - not Shanghai). Go to any one of these cities with a 90 day tourist visa and enough money to pay for a few months rent at an apartment there, and the jobs are disgustingly easy to find.
No qualifications needed, no experience needed, no actual talent or ability for teaching English needed. You can be earning $30 an hour for unqualified teaching in a country where a beer costs 50c (closer to $1.50 in a bar), and the living cost can be as low as you want it to be.
[–]Saint_ 775 points776 points777 points 3 months ago

[–]Newdles 377 points378 points379 points 3 months ago
Teaching english abroad does not require knowledge of the native language as your classes will solely be in English (that's why they hire you).
[–]abrakadabra86 28 points29 points30 points 3 months ago
A little late into the discussion. But i have no idea how this will work. How will you explain the meaning of the word if you don't know the local language???

Hand motions....point to a picture....you just need comprehensible input. They will understand.
[–]DigitalHeadSet 72 points73 points74 points 3 months ago
nope, but in some countries you need a degree or TEFL
[–]battledanny1 178 points179 points180 points 3 months ago
Same in Taiwan. I've been teaching here for about 5 months and didn't graduate high school in America.
[–]WhiteWidow 79 points80 points81 points 3 months ago
How did you get the job, if you don't mind sharing?
[–]battledanny1 91 points92 points93 points 3 months ago
Kinda a long story but I came over with my wife. I have an ARC or "green card" thru marriage. The demand is so incredibly high for native speaking English teachers that I had a full time job within a month of being here. The degree really is just for the visa. Once you are here and fit a particular profile jobs are plenty.

Advice from an old science teacher of mine: Certain oil rig jobs don't need experience and pay a shitload, think 50k-58k a year for painting/scaffolding/admin. Good if you want to rough it for a while then buy a house or something. However they tend to hire from within the industry but once you're in you're in.
[–]Bilderberg_Zerg 124 points125 points126 points 3 months ago
Do it on a Norwegian oil rig and double the pay.
My cousin got her degree in teaching, but instead of going straight to being a teacher she worked a few years as a cleaning lady on a Norwegian oil rig. Two weeks on the rig working 12 hours every day, four weeks off. As in time off. $120k per year. Not bad.
[–]randygiesinger 65 points66 points67 points 3 months ago
Or do it on an Albertan rig for triple? I know guys who START at 50k/year and you can work your way up to driller and be making in excess of 200k/year. Also, I'm a pipefitter, and the opportunity is there for me to make in excess of 300k/y if I really want, and I'm basically just an industrial plumber
[–][deleted] 118 points119 points120 points 3 months ago
Do it on an oil rig on Mars and quadruple the pay.
Advice from an old science teacher of mine: certain oil rig jobs on this planet don't need experience, but don't pay a shitload, either--good if you want to rough it for a while, but not much else. Think bigger.
My cousin got her degree in aerospace engineering, but instead of going straight to NASA she worked a few years as a cleaning lady on a rig south of Olympus Mons. Two Martian weeks on the rig working 12 hours 20 minutes every day, four Martian weeks off. As in time off to roam the surface of Mars on dune buggies. $240k per year. Not bad.
Also, I've heard of pipefitters, and the opportunity is there for you to make in excess of 600k/year if you really want, and you're basically just a Martian plumber. Think about it (however, they tend to hire from within the industry--need to know a lot of physics and vector calculus and stuff--but once you're in, you're in).

It's weird that I find cause to repost this twice in 2 days, but I guess these things go in trends. :)
No experience required, just logical thinking. If you're fairly internet savvy, AKA you can spot simple bugs, sign up with a reputable bug testing firm like uTest.
Take a sandbox course and see if you like it. If so, you can go through the crash courses and learn more about the kind of testing that you might be good at.
I believe the average 'grinding' tester gets around 9 bucks an hour worth of bugs, payable via Paypal or a rechargeable Visa card. After you get a decent record of bugs on minor tests, you'll start getting invites to more high profile (and better paying) tests.
You won't pay for anything, any tools you use can be open source, and at minimum you'll learn something about how web sites are tested. Best of luck.
Fair warning: I'm biased, I worked with these guys for a year and a half, I wrote a bunch of those crash courses, and they took me out of obscurity when I was awarded one of their Tester of the Year awards. :)
Edit 1: Updated with link to Sandbox info, since people have been asking.

I want to try this out but I have 0 experience and that introduce yourself thread is full of people with 5+ years of software testing experience lol.
[–]rrauwl 15 points16 points17 points 3 months ago
I'm trying to remember what my introduction was like. :) But like all things, just tell the truth:
"Hi, I'm new to the testing scene, but I'm eager to read more of the crash courses and really get involved! I hope to start with simple projects, and work my way up the ladder. Thanks."
When I was advising for projects like form verifications, following simple scripts, etc... THIS is the person I would point out. Have they done their sandbox yet? Can they follow instructions? Yes? Sold, get them on the list. :)
[–]shenpen 23 points24 points25 points 3 months ago
No, it's full of people claiming 5+ years of software testing experience.
[–]Call_me_John 20 points21 points22 points 3 months ago
I vouch for this line of work.. I work as a QA specialist for a top 5 publisher (games), and been thinking about getting around utest for a couple of months now, for an added bonus in experience and financial aid.
Since it's been brought up - software companies are almost always looking for a tester! It requires only some IT knowledge and not much else (unless it's automated software testing, which requires some scripting, SQL and more). But it's a great start, the pay is decent for basically no experience required..
Off-topic: Rrauwl, you may have just given me the push to try out a project or two on utest.. :) Wish we could share a beer (my treat, of course)!

English teacher in Taiwan. Seriously all you really need is to be from a native English speaking country. The visa is the only difficult part.

You don't have to learn the language there??

No not at all. In my 1-2nd grade class nobody is even allowed to speak Chinese. In kindergarten it is a little different but you have a Chinese teacher to help.

I was a loader is Harrisburg, I developed a life long dislike of copier paper boxes, Those fucking things can just kill you by the end of a shift. Great company, a lot nicer than RPS was. Just dont steal. Some fuckwit was eating chocolate from the hershey boxes and they brought in a freaking army of security personnel to catch him. The vending machines sold hershey and the normal gate security was useless since it was consumed on site, So we had to deal with being watched all fucking shift long. Turns out it was a driver, Caught his ass mid chomp in his cab. Stupid fuck lost a near 6 figure income bc he didnt want to use the vending machine.
Edited to correct my shitty cell phone number pad.

Make friends with the employees of the places you frequent. I work in a coffee shop, and we've hired several regulars that we all were fond of that were in need of work. I've also left the company and come back and so have a lot of the other employees. Managers like to hire people they know well and/or like being around.

Working on the ramp at an airport. You don't need to know shit about planes, just lifting a bunch of bags over and over, you'll learn everything else. Edit: I guess I should mention the pay is pretty shitty, so there's a high turnover rate and big airports are almost always hiring people. There is seriously a ton of jobs at an airport that you wouldn't expect and almost all of them have nothing to do with actual airplanes. Mostly the managers/supervisors deal with that shit. They wouldn't even come close to trusting a new guy or even people who have been there a while in the positions they're in with most of the actual dangerous stuff and stuff that you could fuck up pretty hugely.

Karaoke host. I've been doing it for 8 years, and we're ALWAYS looking for people. It seems no one can deal with the stress of it LOL. And believe me, it can be stressful as fuck.

I feel you. I'm a trivia host and some people treat me like I'm their second grade teacher. Some people MUST hand me their answer slip every time rather than setting it on the pile, even though my hands are full. Some MUST fold their slips 4 times. Some MUST know the answer immediately after they turn theirs in but the timer is still going. It's super fun and great pay for 2 hours once a week but some nights those little things irk me...I can imagine karaoke hosting has its own little stressors

Imagine if you will a college bar filled with 200 drunk, obnoxious Jersey Shore wannabes, complete with the ego. 40 singers, and EVERY one of them want to go next, and will not take no for an answer. "Yo dawg....put me up...no, put me up....no, fuck that, yo....put me up." After hearing that dozens of times, I'm ready to shoot someone in the fucking face. I mean, it's not always like that, but when it's on, it's really on.
[–]ColonOBrien 114 points115 points116 points 3 months ago
40 singers x 5 minutes per song= over 3 hour wait. People don't like to wait LOL

UPS Night Sort: Full Coverage Insurance for my whole family. .80cent a year raise. Paid vacations. It's not a job, it's a work out, I lost weight in my first few months. We cuss alot. After five years you're 'vested' with the Teamsters Union and working towards retirement. If you actually manage to reach thirty years of service (I've seen one guy do it, he was boss) you'll rake in $3,000 a month in retirement. You can buy class A company stock, and they have a 401k. You could retire like a rich raven working four hours a night at a job that requires no education.

911 dispatch was a fairly easy job for me to get in to. There's fairly standard requirements, although computer proficiency, competence multitasking, and an ability to remain calm under pressure are definitely required. It's not really a job that many people seek out, I think, and it's not really given thought until someone is calling 911. For anybody looking to branch out in to EMS, police, or fire it can definitely be a good stepping stone. Overall, the pay is good, the benefits are usually stellar, it beats punching buttons on a register or stocking store shelves, and it's got to be way better for a resume than unskilled labor. Since there's no degree that directly relates to emergency dispatch (as far as I know), you won't find any positions for dispatchers requiring degrees. The only non-standard barrier would be a thorough background check for some agencies, which can be lengthy and/or very thorough. When I applied, I was told that 40% of applicants failed on the spot due to the drug test, so maybe /r/trees should avoid this one.
As a college student, I'm incredibly lucky to have this job. Working overnight, I can get nearly all of my homework done on the clock during slow hours and leave me with a life outside school and work. Anybody looking to get out of a normal office routine I'd recommend checking out dispatch, but don't expect to walk in to CSI or Die Hard or anything.

Go to a temp service. They usually pay more than minimum wage and a lot of the other people applying are bottom of the barrel, so it's easy to look like a good candidate by comparison. The jobs are temporary most of the time, sure, but sometimes companies who use temp services end up hiring permanently. Even if it is a temporary job, you're likely to pick up a new one through the temp service afterwards anyway.
[–]last2zero 47 points48 points49 points 3 months ago
I went to a temp agency right out of school.
They paid quite well, enough to live comfortably and cover the bills.
After 8 months of working for a company they set me up at, I was offered a full time job.
Been there since.

If you're willing to wipe ass, Nursing Assistants are usually in pretty high demand. about 120 hours of training, and depending on the state/facility you get hired in, you can be reimbursed for even that. It's a three-shift job, so you can fit it around more education for whatever.
If you're willing to go to school (probably for a few years), You can get an A.S. as a laser technician, where a graduating class of 8 will have more than 200 job offers before graduation, and salaries start in the 40k range.

Entry level jobs? They don't exist anymore.
[–]HardlyWorkingDotOrg 280 points281 points282 points 3 months ago
No, they do exist... but you need experience...
I swear if I see one more ad for an entry level "junior ..." position with a minimum experience of 3 years in the industry...
[–]SweetboyRomero 103 points104 points105 points 3 months ago
My girlfriend is having this problem at the moment, with a degree and a Master's.
I know that qualifications aren't as valuable as experience, but seriously - if you had that experience, would you be going for an entry level job??
[–]HardlyWorkingDotOrg 114 points115 points116 points 3 months ago
The problem is directly related to the economy, I think. Because of recessions, companies don't want to throw money around as carelessly as they did in the past. So right now, they only want to spend money to pay an entry level salary for a new position.
But, also because of the economy, there are many people looking for jobs. So, it is a buyers market for the companies who now can demand three years experience as minimum as there are enough people fresh out of a job and in need of another one that have this qualification.
Applicants only have to be in a desperate enough situation and they will take that job even if it only pays entry level salary.
In short, in an economy with lots of skilled people without jobs, companies can get "the best of both worlds" by only having to offer entry level salary yet can have something like a three year experience requirement for these positions.
[–]BonzoTheBoss 1805 points1806 points1807 points 3 months ago
"We're looking for an entry level job BUT MUST HAVE 10 YEARS EXPERIENCE".
[–]Farabee 925 points926 points927 points 3 months ago

Tier 1 Tech Support? Must have experience coding Python, Ruby, and Java with 5 years of Unix administration and a government clearance. Mind you, you'll need none of that shit on a day to day basis, but we like seeing how little we can pay someone with all that shit in today's economy.
[–]Mildcorma 833 points834 points835 points 3 months ago
I'm CCNA and CCNP certified, working towards my MSC currently, just got out of university and i've lost quite a few potential jobs because "I have no experience" (I am 26, almost a magistrate, a qualified teaching assistant, a level 3 canoe and kayak coach but this is life experience, not job experience).
When I asked if they had anything available in like, you know, tier 1 or 2 tech support (a job is a job, and in the interview is the best place to ask imo) they said I was "too qualified" for those positions.
OH OK THAT MAKES SENSE
[–]shaddupsevenup 284 points285 points286 points 3 months ago

[–]matt40 224 points225 points226 points 3 months ago

[–]TheAbominableSnowman 91 points92 points93 points 3 months ago
Lie.
Seriously. You want entry-level? Don't tell them you have a CCNA or CCNP, or that you're working on an MSC. Hell, don't even tell them you graduated university. Simply tell them you took a few classes at Univ of Bullshit and you're looking for something in entry level with a company you would like to grow your career with.
After a year, start interviewing with other companies, and put your certs on those apps. You'll get a lot better reception.
[–]Newdles 39 points40 points41 points 3 months ago
Once you are CCNP certified, you don't need to make note that you are also CCNA certified as it is inferior. I'm only CCNA but I actually have experience. It sucks that getting the certs actually demonstrate real life ability but nobody will give you a shot without real life experience. Shit is so backwards nowadays. Be willing to move away and you should be able to land a job in no time with a CCNP. You will most likely start as a junior network engineer solely because you have no experience but you should be able to move up pretty damn quick with your credentials.

I looked into an apprenticeship the other day.
They wanted to pay £97.50 ($150) a week for about 38 hours work. They wanted me to provide my own travel to several places a couple of times a week (probably £30 a week)
AND they wanted previous experience in the job role. Seriously don't stand a fucking chance in this country.
[–]LibraryGeek 80 points81 points82 points 3 months ago
wait, if you have previous experience, why would you need an apprenticeship? Doesn't that go against the definition? Aarrrrgghhh people doing hiring are nuts these days :/

[–]luddite75 539 points540 points541 points 3 months ago
Throwaway, but this needs to be said -
While most of you were playing Pokemon, the dot com bubble burst in 2000 - the same year I graduated college with a degree in UI / UX. Needless to say, the interviews I did manage to land were absolutely futile. One of my favorites took place in Boston at a pretty high profile firm I won't mention (ever read The Art Of Innovation?). It took place in a large, seemingly abandoned office full of Areon chairs, iMacs, toys, bean bags, PS2's etc... typical late 90's design studio. We just sat looking out over the city pondering the future. I had made it to the top, only to get a peek and have the door closed in my face. Cue a sad Enya song / pan in on single tear as it runs down my cheek.
Time goes by, I dabble in alcoholism.
A family friend gets me in on a construction job. I reluctantly take it. It's funny how your student loan officer is like a rich uncle while you are in school, after you graduate he becomes and angry drug dealer - and you owe him money.
I show up for my first day in dress attire. Everyone gives me funny looks. They give me the tour of the building, put a set of drawings in front of me and basically leave me alone. The superintendent leaves at 3:30 and so do I. This pattern continues for about a week and then I get "the talk". The superintendent lets me go. He says that I'm not pulling my weight and theres no room in the budget for me to sit around. Understand I received absolutely NO direction from day one. I was pre-programed by my lifetime of institutional schooling to show-up everyday and wait for direction from my superiors.
This was my Tyler Durden moment. My education didn't matter here. My past didn't matter here. I was nobody, anonymous. No one expected me to do anything. The looks I got on the first day were the same looks that a dozen other privileged white boys with college degrees got on their first day. I was useless and I didn't matter. I was told to leave...
For some reason I showed-up the next day. I still don't know why. I was in kind of a daze. I wore jeans and a t-shirt this time. I brought a few tools that I borrowed from my dad. The superintendent wasn't there, so I headed in to the building, found the foremen (who somehow didn't know of my dismissal) and he put me to work. He hated me.
My first job was outside pumping water out of a ditch with a Venezuelan guy who spoke no english in the rain. It was back breaking, filthy and (at the time) beneath me. I was too good for this, but I kept at it.
Today, I have seen more sunrises than I have seen sunsets in my lifetime. I make 65K a year (southeast USA dollars). I own a house, drive my dream truck and I payed off my angry drug dealer. Not to brag, but I'm in pretty good shape too.
I have tons of more anecdotes, but my point here is that the construction industry has a deficit when it comes to smart people. Mostly because we fear hard work in this country. I wish more people would join up. Once you get your bearings, it's a great way to make an honest living.

This not nearly the norm in this industry. As a matter of fact, most construction workers make about 30-40k a year, live in a trailer, and drive an old minivan someone gave to them and they fixed up. That's mainly why it looks like an unattractive proposition for most educated people. That, and rather than "getting in good shape" a lot of these guys absolutely destroy their bodies with no benefits, retirement plan, or nest egg to back them up.

Sadly the years my husband made $47,000 were great. This past year with very little concrete work we barely survived on $20,000 for a family of 5. There just is NO concrete work around here. Anyone we know that is working owns the company,or is the kid of the company owner. If you do find a job expect to finish concrete for minimum wage..if you are white...if you are brown you will be lucky to pull in 5 bucks per hour. When my husband lost his last job the boss point blank told him, " I can hire 5 Mexicans for your pay and still not spend as much."

No shit. At my last job (in grad school now) on my first week no one really knew what to do with me, so I just walked down the hall of engineers (people at my bosses level) asking if they had anything I could do. Looked like a fucking badass and for the next five years got myself the highest percentage raises of my contemporaries. I slacked off just ass much as they did, took naps, browsed the internet (hadn't discovered Reddit yet) but every one of the people at my bosses level still thought of me as a person who will find something to do when I wasn't busy. End result, no one bothered to check up on me for years.

Hustle.
Any place you go, apply for a job. If you don't have a job spend 8 hours a day looking for a job. Go online, apply to literally every job you see. Even if you don't think you want to do it, even if you think you aren't qualified or overqualified, apply. Talk to your friends/family, ask them if they know anyone who is hiring. If you still can't find anything and need money, go door to door and offer to shovel snow, do landscaping, do repairs, anything. If you have a drive to work, you can find a job within a month's time.

I agree, although it took me a little over a year. I'm now working two part time jobs totaling over 50 hours per week, and I'm looking at a third for my day off. It's not something I want to do forever, but it's good for my resume, I'm meeting a lot of people, and it is showing that I will work hard. God it sucks so much. I'm so tired.

This. My brother in law sat on his ass only applying to jobs he thought he was qualified for/wanted to do and his job search lasted a year. He let his children go without health insurance for 6 months while he looked for a job he deemed worthy.
My sister immediately went to every retail shop in the area and was hired at a Starbucks within a week. She kept applying to every full-time job opening she could find while working there. Within a month she had 3 different job offers and took a full time job doing something she thought she'd hate but ended up loving.
Moral of the story: grab life by the balls and make it your bitch.

This is gonna get so buried, but be a model at your local art school. Call their main line and ask who hires models, and then go see that person. It doesn't matter if you've had any prior experience, and you don't even have to be good looking (artists love drawing fat and strange looking people.) There are clothed classes and heads and hands classes if you don't want to take your clothes off. Pay is around $19 an hour, breaks every 20 min, and they usually hire you as an independent contractor so technically you're working for yourself.
[–]OpportunityBox 13 points14 points15 points 3 months ago
Amazon runs a per task job site called Mechanical Turk. You can rate images or write short 150 word articles or other random tasks for small money per task. Anyone can post a task they need completed that's too hard for a computer to accomplish. Do a bunch while you're sitting home watching TV at night and you can make around $8 an hour from your couch after you get some practice.

Bus driver. City or charter.
Several agencies around my area are almost always hiring and will give you the training to get a CDL.

If you're a current student, running for a law firm or accountant's office is a SWEET gig. They usually try to stick to students though. Other types of companies have these positions too.
[–]Phalex 47 points48 points49 points 3 months ago
What does that mean, running for a law firm?
[–]AlmostALawyer 105 points106 points107 points 3 months ago
Basically, you make copies, pick up lunch, run documents to the courthouse, etc. You help them do things that would normally be time consuming, and it allows the lawyers to stay focused on cases/their work in general.

did this job for a corp law firm and it was a blast. also free booze and beautiful women.
[–]JSKlunk 24 points25 points26 points 3 months ago
Like an intern/work experience placement?
[–]phpwebdev 54 points55 points56 points 3 months ago
like a runner
[–]m0llusk 81 points82 points83 points 3 months ago
Law is infamously overstaffed. There are dozens of applicants for any open position because there are too many people with law degrees.
[–]thedevilyousay 22 points23 points24 points 3 months ago
Yeah, but they still need non-lawyers. My old firm had like 300 lawyers in one office, but like 400 more staff. We used to get application from law grads for the non-lawyer jobs. No firm in their right mind would hire a lawyer for a clerical job. It's degrading for all parties involved.
