Everlong by Foo Fighters. Not that recent, but I'm confident that it will withstand the test of time.

[–]mangeloid 11 points12 points ago

Good choice. Everlong is the one Foo Fighters song I think anyone who likes good music, even if they're not the biggest Foo Fighter fan necessarily (like myself) can totally appreciate. Shit dude, BOB DYLAN asked Grohl if he could cover it!

[–]baultista 14 points15 points ago

Monkey Wrench and Learn to Fly are both favourites of mine. Despite what anyone else says, I consider Everlong to be their best song.

[–]Unhelpful_Scientist 23 points24 points ago

the acoustic version of Everlong is perfect

[–]RGT42 7 points8 points ago

I was never really interested in listening to their newer stuff but Everlong is fucking great. I love Grohl's Tiny Dancer cover too. Those two are probably my most listened to. And by that I mean the acoustic everlong.

[–]centerD_5 6 points7 points ago

Well you're missing out. Wasting Light has to be one of the best albums I have listened to start to finish

[–]BeskarKomrk 2 points3 points ago

This. All their albums are pretty much amazing.

[–]AndeR53 2 points3 points ago

More like everything by the Foo Fighters.

[–]Pollo_Bueno 2 points3 points ago

I really do think the Foo Fighters are going to go down as one of the best bands of this time period.

[–]bad_keisatsu 111 points112 points ago

This is just a list of everyone's favorite songs, not songs that are likely to be considered classics in the future >_<.

[–]niggaragua 12 points13 points ago

Right? I know it's ignorant, but I haven't even heard quite a bit of the songs mentioned.

[–]facebucket 206 points207 points ago

Modest Mouse - Float On

It has just the right amount of whacked indie rock and pop smarts to be a classic for it's time.

[–]Rebel-Yell 15 points16 points ago

You just made me look up my Modest Mouse... and yeah, now I am listening to that whole CD.. err.. album... I actually bought it... and it is still great.

[–]facebucket 7 points8 points ago

Agreed, such a great album. The hipster fans seem to hate it because it made them huge, but damn do they deserve it. Their live shows are amazing too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Speaking as someone who's loved Modest Mouse for years, I have no fucking idea what you're talking about with these "hipster fans" who hate it. Haven't encountered a single person who dislikes that album.

[–]batmarm[!] 5 points6 points ago

Modest Mouse fan of many years here. Strongly disliked that album, as I grew to love them for their awesome unpolished backwoods anger ish thing, not overly polished pop music. Funny because I'm a massive Smiths fan too and the addition of Marr should've in theory created my favorite album of all time.

However, I have 0 problem with them getting recognition for their music and becoming popular. It was about time they started making actual money from their music.

[–]baultista 8 points9 points ago*

This is one of those few songs I never skip on my MP3 player. As far as I'm concerned it's one of the better songs of the previous decade (2001-2010)

[–]facebucket 0 points1 point ago

Yes, in my top 10 of all time for sure.

[–]gradeahonky 2 points3 points ago

If Float On wasn't such a damn good song, it might have been ruined by your description of it.

[–]auraslip 80 points81 points ago

Santeria. When it comes on, EVERYONE FUCKING SINGS IT.

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points ago

What I got.

[–]oddspellingofPhreid 4 points5 points ago*

I was going to say this song but 16 years is a pretty long time. I'm not sure it will count. Honestly, I think a lot of Sublime songs will become known as classics. I could definitely see them become one of those big names even your kids have heard of.

[–]fightwithcrayons 1 point2 points ago

Most people don't know Santeria, so no, it likely won't become a classic. A classic isn't just a "great song" that is well known in some circles, it has pretty broad appeal.

You're looking more at yr Bad Romances than Santeria.

[–]JSleek 235 points236 points ago

I'm not sure if it's old enough yet, but "Hey Yah" by Outkast gets my vote.

[–]RGT42 53 points54 points ago

Ms. Jackson and Roses as well. Fuck they're cool. I hope their new album that is supposedly coming out doesn't disappoint..

[–]Duendeee 5 points6 points ago

ms.jackson all the way

[–]Tuketu 9 points10 points ago

So much Speakerboxx and Love Below. What about Spottieottiedopaliscious? Wheelz of Steel? Return of the G? Shit, why not Rosa Parks, while we're at it?

[–]waycheck 3 points4 points ago

Crazy bitch.

[–]kathx 2 points3 points ago

Andre 3000 and Big Boi are cool as fuck, and I'm not even that into rap/hip hop.

[–]mangeloid 4 points5 points ago

I came here to say exactly this. Glad to see it at the top.

The surest sign of a classic song is that it fails to age. Hey Ya is just as awesome now, 10 years after it came out. It doesn't matter how often you've heard the song, it's still awesome, it's still relevant, and it doesn't sound dated at all. Classic.

[–]TheWeedChronicles 94 points95 points ago

RHCP

[–]Corriemuchloch 60 points61 points ago

Yeah, I feel like Californication and Under the Bridge are pretty damn certain to be classics

[–]NorthernSkeptic 35 points36 points ago

Under the Bridge was 20 years ago. I'm not sure you can call that modern.

[–]MarryZuckercorn 38 points39 points ago

Holy shit... I'm old.

[–]Corriemuchloch 7 points8 points ago

This is true, but when he said modern I assumed he meant "our generation," or something like that.
Plus, it just didn't feel right to mention Californication without mentioning Under the Bridge as well.

[–]superAL1394 4 points5 points ago

Oh god I forgot about RHCP.

Excuse me while I go listen to Under The Bridge again.

[–]resurrection_man 84 points85 points ago

"Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" - Daft Punk

[–]Hakumen 30 points31 points ago

Upvoted because you're on the right track, I would say One More Time instead of HBFS.

[–]InTheSoupTogether 8 points9 points ago

I want to celebrate!

[–]rileyrulesu 1 point2 points ago

Finally! One that actually might actually survive the test of time, and isn't just good.

[–]Tallain 105 points106 points ago

I like how some of the "best" comments are indie music. ಠ_ಠ

[–]rabton 63 points64 points ago

Yea, sorry folks but I highly doubt indie bands will become long-standing classics. A few might, but some are just too obscure. Our generation may have a large indie following, but music like Adele's stuff is what will be remembered.

[–]LiamNeesonAteMyBaby 38 points39 points ago

Laughing so hard at people thinking Mumford and Sons will be remembered in for years to come.

[–]kindnessabound 10 points11 points ago

Well Mumford and Sons is pretty terrible as far as "indie" goes...

[–]BeskarKomrk 13 points14 points ago

I'm not sure I agree with you on that. I would say that "our generation" is the one who really decides what becomes a classic, by continuing to listen to it in years to come. So, if our generation has a large indie following, it makes sense to me that some of these songs will remain around.

Every generation has probably said the same thing about bands that were popular at the time. "Nobody will remember the Beatles in 50 years, they're just a teen fad." Why can't the same be true for some of the bands in these comments, e.g. Modest Mouse or Mumford and Sons?

[–]palindromicsquare 129 points130 points ago

Mr. Brightside - The Killers

I don't care what you say, I LOVE that song.

[–]TryingToSucceed 11 points12 points ago

I'm not a fan of karaoke, but every time I go to a karaoke night at a bar and Mr. Brightsidee, without fail everybody stops what they're doing and sings along.

[–]Johanu 2 points3 points ago

I'm partial to All These Things That I've Done. What a great song.

[–]hybridtheorist 0 points1 point ago

Definitely. I mainly listen to metal, but that's one of the few indie songs I'd definitely say is amongst my favourites.

Even when it was played to death on release I still loved it.

[–]TheGreenBackPack 42 points43 points ago

I think "kids" by MGMT has that classic feel.

[–]alyon724 9 points10 points ago

Maybe also "Time to Pretend"

[–]StopOversimplifying 27 points28 points ago

Everyone in this thread should try to ignore their actual opinion of a song when deciding if it'll become a "classic."

Classic songs usually need to have a pretty broad appeal, and last for decades through a changing culture.

Can't be too obscure, can't get annoying to most people after 3 months.

[–]StopOversimplifying 35 points36 points ago

To answer the question of the thread, I think Bad Romance by Lady Gaga, Karma Police by Radiohead, and Viva La Vida by Coldplay all have a shot.

[–]facebucket 15 points16 points ago

Bad Romance is definitely a contender, it set the new pop standard.

[–]Clowesia 10 points11 points ago

"I don't know who half the fucking bands in this thread are" Aka, they are not going to be classics.

[–]EradiKate 37 points38 points ago

I'm gonna say "Single Ladies" is going to make it, because the dance and video are so iconic. It'll get compared to "Thriller", just you wait.

[–]niggaragua 11 points12 points ago

Kanye was having a Negrodamus moment at the VMAs that year

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

OF ALL TIME

[–]red321red321 41 points42 points ago*

someone like you by adele. i'm a guy who listens to metal, rap, jazz fusion among other genres but her music is just straight to the point, no gimmicks, and that song is just a piano and her incredible voice and it's an amazing/heartbreaking song that will never be forgotten.

[–]Kosmo_Kramer_ 48 points49 points ago

Thong Song for sure.

[–]mangeloid 11 points12 points ago

Dumps like a truck?

[–]Lucasipop 9 points10 points ago

Truck, truck

[–]enpensant 6 points7 points ago

Guys like, "what?"

[–]Alttabmatt 5 points6 points ago

What what?

[–]Sp1derX 4 points5 points ago

Baby move your butt.

[–]elcoyote399 6 points7 points ago

Butt butt

[–]blueblud124[!] 5 points6 points ago

i think to sing it again

[–]SweatpantsDV 14 points15 points ago

I spent 3 straight years trying to bring that song back to popularity in the clubs in my town. I heard it a couple times without me putting it on, so I'm just going to assume that I succeeded. (however unlikely, I like my fantasy world)

[–]ieatcatfood 55 points56 points ago

blah blah blah radiohead blah blah blah

[–]ThisGuy182 21 points22 points ago

Thank you. I actually just listened to an entire Radiohead album for the first time; it was pretty good...musically sound...catchy in parts...I've heard worse...and better.

[–]Awsumsnausages 14 points15 points ago

I never thought that Radiohead had a middle ground, I've only ever met people who love them or hate them. Thanks for being the middle ground.

[–]ThisGuy182 17 points18 points ago

You betcha. Its very hard to stayed in the middle as I have had multiple people actually tell me that I'm basically just not intellectual enough to understand their music. I particularly enjoyed the defeated look on one guy's face when I responded with, "Why would I care about being judged by a fan base that isn't intellectual enough to understand what the word opinion means?"

[–]Awsumsnausages 12 points13 points ago

Haha, I love Radiohead, they're my favorite band, but their fanbase pisses me off. A lot of people seem to think liking them makes you better than everyone else, those pretentious bitches.

[–]whisper78 39 points40 points ago

"Do You Realize?" by the Flaming Lips!

[–]mightyjake 4 points5 points ago

I FORGOT ABOUT THAT ALBUM UNTIL YOU JUST SAID IT!

Much obliged.

[–]pepparr 2 points3 points ago

Was listening to this as I read this.

[–]thetrevistabomb 35 points36 points ago

anything with jack white

[–]donownsyou 16 points17 points ago

Agreed... If I had to pick one song it'd be seven nation army

[–]thetrevistabomb 5 points6 points ago

dead leaves and the dirty ground is pretty high up their for me, but in popularity wise, seven nation army would probably be it

[–]TheEllimist 3 points4 points ago

[–]Jeff_Drake 9 points10 points ago

"Classics" usually aren't the "best" songs of their time, but they're usually very good and have wide-appeal.

That being said, Bad Romance is going to be popular for a long time.

[–]BlueThundah 5 points6 points ago

Don't Look Back in Anger by Oasis will always be remembered.

[–]YoChocola 5 points6 points ago

So many music snobs in this thread, ugh.

[–]ilovefullmetal 30 points31 points ago

Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol

[–]MyNameIsChar 9 points10 points ago

I remember listening to that song in my pre-teen Emo phase. I thought I totally understood what it means. Turns out, I didn't know shit about what any of their music meant.

[–]fordprefect48 16 points17 points ago

Top 40 music like Adele will be remembered like we do pop classics such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, or what have you. while bands like Radiohead, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Beck, or any band that is redditors' favorite will be remembered as we do Pink Floyd, Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground, Nick Drake, etc. not a lot of radio plays and exposure but they will have their devoted fans and their families.

Problem solved

[–]TheOrangatangClan 50 points51 points ago

Kanye West - Golddigger

The hip hop snob in me wants to bring up that it isn't his best, but i'd be lying if I said I didn't know all the words to it.

[–]VTFD 33 points34 points ago

Empire State of Mind, Jay-Z

[–]flynavy46 37 points38 points ago

Dog Days Are Over - I think history will be very good to Florence Welch's huge vocals.

[–]superAL1394 2 points3 points ago

God I can listen to Florence And The Machine for hours.

[–]cauldcuts 25 points26 points ago

Tik Tok.

You know people will bring it up. You know people will feel nostalgic about it. Don't deny it.

[–]Tw9caboose 3 points4 points ago

I feel stupider for looking that up and listening to it

[–]rileyrulesu 2 points3 points ago

No they won't, and no they won't.

Furthermore, fuck you.

[–]LeoSloane 40 points41 points ago

Definitely Coldplay, but hopefully their earlier stuff. Their new music lacks substance.

[–]litchykp 43 points44 points ago

I'd say Yellow, The Scientist, and Clocks are the best candidates IMO.

[–]auraslip 13 points14 points ago

A rush of blood to the head. All of it.

[–]PepperedLeper 5 points6 points ago

I really like Green Eyes by them, but I don't know if it'll be a classic.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

Idk, I really enjoyed Viva La Vida.

[–]theramennoodle 3 points4 points ago

call me crazy but I actually like their new stuff more. It seems like they are less chasing U2 and coming up with their own sound now. Just my opinion.

[–]Tw9caboose 2 points3 points ago

Are you kidding their new album is amazing

[–]dpm5075 33 points34 points ago

I can't tell which one has the biggest footprint, but I'd say 'Times Like These,' 'Best of You,' or 'My Hero' by Foo Fighters.

[–]Minimumtyp 6 points7 points ago

THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST

[–]oscarj 9 points10 points ago

I'd reckon the Foo Fighters will have a few songs on the 'classics' playlist. These being some of them, Everlong, Learn to Fly, and Monkey Wrench being additions. Having listened to a lot of classic rock stations they like to play the shit out of one or two songs by a (previously) big act, then slowly transition to another one or two, rotate and repeat.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points ago

I would say the Gorrilaz album, Demon Days, is already a classic. It is just awesome, with my personal favorites being Fire Coming Out Of The Monkeys Head and November Has Come.

[–]Hakumen 11 points12 points ago

Demon Days is hardly a classic. To be fair, Feel Good Inc. was a popular song but so was Clint Eastwood. Don't confuse "my favorite album" with widespread respect i.e. "classic appeal".

[–]superAL1394 17 points18 points ago

[–]tableman 2 points3 points ago

Stan - Enimem

[–]BeefBayonet03 3 points4 points ago

Good Vibrations - marky mark and the funky bunch

[–]kidl33t 19 points20 points ago

That 'tub-thumping' one by whoever-the-fuck wrote it. That shit is like brain-crack.

[–]madcosimbad 5 points6 points ago

Chumbawamba wrote it. You can't have a good party without playing that song at least once!

[–]dodongo 3 points4 points ago

Chumbawamba. And it's like the most vapid, shittiest of all their catalog. But it sure as hell is catchy isn't it? :)

[–]alyon724 29 points30 points ago*

Just going to start listing stuff that will probably not be classics but you will sure as hell remember from somewhere. Not really related much to the thread... but I figure its the wee hours of the morning and you're bored as fuck also.

[–]Kaiidera 10 points11 points ago

Everlong - Foo Fighters

C'mon people. Still a classic from the 90's. It's halfway there.

[–]ThisGuy182 78 points79 points ago

All The Small Things - Blink-182

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]yesitsnicholas 23 points24 points ago

I hope to god you are wrong.

[–]roland333 17 points18 points ago

Dammit is a pretty awesome pop song. I actually really like all of dude ranch, its just the rest of their discography is very milquetoast.

[–]Rebel-Yell 6 points7 points ago

Most of my classic rock stations are already playing Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and the like, so I think you should drop your estimate down to about 5-10 years, which is kind of sad. Not that I don't like these bands, but they are not classic rock.

[–]centerD_5 5 points6 points ago

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH no

[–]baultista 1 point2 points ago

I have a feeling that Blink 182 will be clumped into that punk-pop era in the very early part of the 21st century that most people would soon rather forget, along with bands like Sum 41, GOB (sad, because all of their hits are classics in my mind), MxPx, Simple Plan, etc. Hell you might even be able to throw Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte into the same category.

[–]ThisGuy182 2 points3 points ago

Possibly, however Blink-182 are considered to be legends of pop-punk while the other band you mentioned (even though I do like them) are not. So hopefully you're wrong cause I got me a Blink tattoo.

[–]marmosetohmarmoset 12 points13 points ago

I genuinely look forward to the day in the future when I'm listening to a classic pop station in my flying space minivan with my children when Rebecca Black's "Friday" comes on the air. I'm not sure how I'll react, or how my kids will react, but it will probably be hilarious.

[–]MyNameIsChar 20 points21 points ago

How to Save a Life by The Fray will be played like classic rock nowadays, in twenty years.

[–]TryingToSucceed 4 points5 points ago

Best scene in Scrubs.

[–]IamStrategy 7 points8 points ago

I hope most of these people are joking.

[–]rabton 56 points57 points ago

Adele's 21 album. The entire damn thing will be played for decades.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

adele's 21 will be like carol king's tapestry. or billy joel's "the stranger" everyone will own it on their ipod and there will be about two or three songs on it that get kicked around all of the time and sung at karaoke for decades to come.

when I was a kid I used to go looking for "cool" albums on vinyl at second hand stores and you could always count on finding a few carol king's and a few billy joel's in there. always the same album.

[–]Inglipped 13 points14 points ago

Personal opinion: 21 only has 3-5 good songs. Bear in mind they are great songs, but the rest just sort of pale in comparison.

[–]JoeyJeremiah 51 points52 points ago

American Idiot.

Probably due to the fact that it's an album, and not just a list of songs, plus the broadway show helps.

[–]radenB 9 points10 points ago

I feel like Good Riddance would be seen more as a classic than American Idiot. Thoughts?

[–]bdanahy319 8 points9 points ago

I saw the Broadway show, it was excellent.

[–]frankmug 17 points18 points ago

Some of Eminems stuff, like "Stan" and "The Way I Am"

[–]realistictendencies 18 points19 points ago

Lose yourself , not fan of em like I used to be but this one is timeless

[–]Mr_A 3 points4 points ago

I always thought that Guilty Conscience never got the recognition it deserved. But it won't be made as memorable as Stan will.

[–]rocketparrotlet 34 points35 points ago

Tool will probably be held in a similar regard in 20 years as Pink Floyd is today.

[–]BreatheLikeADog 25 points26 points ago

You'll be hearing Red Solo Cup in bars 10 years from now.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Rebel-Yell 9 points10 points ago

Knowing that it was Toby Keith, you are also a brave soul.

But I agree, it will be played in bars for a long time.

You just made my day with this song. Thank you.

[–]TBizzcuit 5 points6 points ago

Thanks for posting that. I've never heard it before until now.

[–]the_yank 4 points5 points ago

I recently fell in love with them. Can't believe I'm so late to the party- they are refreshingly brilliant!

[–]Emperor_Zach 2 points3 points ago

That entire album is great.

[–]bartleby 4 points5 points ago

I definitely like the song. But nothing about it seems remarkable enough to make it a "classic."

[–]70sfinallyfall 36 points37 points ago*

I hope, for the sake of the future, that Chicago by Sufjan Stevens is one of them.

Also, The Suburbs by Arcade Fire

And of course Daymanstep

Edit: Some tracks off of Arcade Fire- Funeral were suggested, and I agree totally. I just thought of the first Arcade Fire song that came to my head, it comes on the TV and radio on here a lot. Which happened to be the suburbs.

[–]facebucket 10 points11 points ago

Arcade Fire - Funeral has so many amazing tracks. IMO it beats Suburbs by leaps and bounds. Neighborhood 1,2, and 3, Crown of Love, Wake Up, Rebellion; all could be classics.

[–]negative_epsilon 38 points39 points ago

While I love all of those songs, none of those songs are radio popular enough to be classics. All the songs that are classics today were huge radio hits in their respective decades.

Because of this, I would say that Adele's Rolling in the Deep will probably end up being a classic. Also, Crazy by Gnarles Barkley.

[–]70sfinallyfall 8 points9 points ago

Good point.

Though, they could be songs that hipsters from the future will listen to. Eerie!

I really like Crazy and Rolling in the Deep. Agreed on those two.

[–]scjones 28 points29 points ago

pumped up kicks

[–]rocketparrotlet 13 points14 points ago

While I'm not usually a fan of pop music, the fact that this song which I heard countless times at parties and dances actually has lyrical value is a step in the right direction. Maybe something will come out of it.

[–]scjones 2 points3 points ago

For the band, probably not. The song is going to be played for eternity imo.

[–]Jeff_Drake 2 points3 points ago

Lyrical value? I like the song, but it barely has 2 verses.

[–]llamaspit 5 points6 points ago

Rage Against the Machine's debut. I know it's 20 years old, but to someone who's over 40, that's recent. And no, I'm not picking a song, the whole album.

As for anything new, there's just not that much that seems to stand out. The originality is just not there. So anything that will be a classic will probably be simply "what sold the most".

[–]robvargas 6 points7 points ago

The garage rock bands of the early 2000's created some of the best music in recent memory.

The Hives, The Strokes, The Fratellis, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The White Stripes.

No bullshit. Just rock and roll.

[–]litchykp 14 points15 points ago

In The End by Linkin Park.

[–]brettrosey 17 points18 points ago

The xx - Crystalised

[–]SayWordSAHN 2 points3 points ago

Really doubt it.

[–]hapticity 5 points6 points ago

So many hipsters in this thread.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Rolling in the Deep is the only song I can bother thinking of right now.

[–]PerogiXW 6 points7 points ago

Crazy

Rolling Stone called it the best song of the '00s and I tend to agree.

[–]rfsh101 1 point2 points ago

This chick I worked with said the same thing and I tend to agree.

[–]Mr_A 3 points4 points ago

Real answer: U2

[–]randomrelevency 2 points3 points ago

radiohead - creep

and here's why..

[–]bigger_bau5 1 point2 points ago

Think about what songs have survived and become standards today. I'm talking about 100+ years. Maybe some classical pieces like Mozart's Twinkle, Twinkle and some gospel standards. The Beatles will probably last the test of time and turned into children songs but most of the songs that are being listed WILL NOT survive. Can anyone name a standard from 1910-1930 that has lasted?

[–]broken_sword 0 points1 point ago

Graduation - Vitamin C

[–]ILikeNegativeKarma 1 point2 points ago

Sabotage - Beastie Boys

[–]samuelclark 0 points1 point ago

Harder to Breathe - Maroon 5

Sugar, We're Going Down - Fall Out Boy

I feel like those will be around in a few decades.

[–]SadistiKitteh 0 points1 point ago

Poker Face- Lady Gaga Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)- Beyonce 21 Guns- Green Day Lose it- Eminem Tik Tok- Ke$ha

guessing those due to memorability, not personal opinion :U

Hell, Jizz in my Pants could become a classic! XD

[–]Brrrtje 0 points1 point ago

I fear we will never be cured of the cancer that is Coldplay.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Linkin Park: In the end

Commas.

[–]radenB 4 points5 points ago

SIMON AND GARFUNKEL!... Too old? Worth a shot.

[–]TheRedGoblin 12 points13 points ago

99 Problems - Jay Z

Baby- Justin Bieber (You guys can hate but he can make hit songs)

[–]thinkovertly 6 points7 points ago

As much as I hate it, I don't choose what songs will be classics so you're probably right.

[–]spectraline 6 points7 points ago

Doubt it with the Biebster. Tween pop does not stand the test of time. High school bands sometimes still occasionally break out Hangin' Tough during football games but I don't hear Please Don't Go Girl or Step by Step on anything considered classic 80s/early 90s.

[–]_Meece_ 1 point2 points ago

His people can make hit songs.

[–]lolwhuttt 1 point2 points ago

Maybe some old timers can help me here, are there any "classics" that you had never heard of when they were still new. I don't know half the stuff people are posting.

[–]Ninja_mak 4 points5 points ago

Cee Lo Green's Fuck You.

[–]Katyakatyak 3 points4 points ago

None of the above.

[–]niggaragua 2 points3 points ago

Poker Face. Hate it all you want, but it gained so much international success (topped the charts in 20 countries, among the most downloaded songs of all time) that it won't be easily forgotten.

[–]fantasyreality 3 points4 points ago

Adele? Some Coldplay songs. Since classics tend to gravitate along really popular, nonstop-playing songs in the radio, I am not surprised if some Gaga, Britney, or Jason Mraz's songs will be considered classics years from now too.

I like Sigur Rós , but I don't think many current 15-year-old kids know them.

[–]Frankfusion 1 point2 points ago

Let Go by Frou Frou

[–]eaturliver 2 points3 points ago

Probably the Smashing Pum.... awwww shit.

[–]docqk 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure it has been stated many times here, the heart of the matter is this. It doesn't matter what the "best song" from an era is. It doesn't matter if the song was horrible. The songs that make the top tens are usually the ones remembered long down the road. And the way that "Mmm Bop" is remembered and somewhat glorified, other horrible songs will as well.

[–]OregonGreen242 0 points1 point ago

No Incubus?! Everyone knows Drive amirite? Incubus=amazing :)

[–]xPurpleDragon 2 points3 points ago

Lonely Boy - The Black Keys.

[–]delanims 0 points1 point ago

Rack City Bitch

[–]TheNecromancer 0 points1 point ago

Given their size and appeal, I think Muse could well stand the test of time. Maybe Nights of Cydonia or Hysteria.

[–]GreatMindsThinkAlike 1 point2 points ago

Like a G6 - Far East Movement

That song was on the Top 10 list in eleven other countries, and it was #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 TWICE.

It's also instantly recognizable, in my opinion.

[–]thatis 0 points1 point ago

"Hollaback Girl" may not go down as a classic but it will be played forever for no apparent reason just like "I Love Rock N Roll"

I'll give "Sugar, We're Going Down" an outside shot.
