I use a Bluetooth stereo. I can't select music from the stereo, but I can change tracks, accept, decline, and end calls.

I think bluetooth is the best way to go. I was thinking of this the other day and bluetooth never occurred to me, despite the fact that I have two A2DP car stereos, and A2DP headphones.

I'm strongly hoping that due to multiple carriers having the Galaxy Nexus that some Nexus docks and stereo-docks will emerge. If that doesn't happen, I don't see it at all; no 1 phone dominates the Android market right now. iPhones being so damn uniform gets them all the goodies.

Agree with you there. The only time there was a disturbance in the iPhone/iPod compatibility was when Apple removed the firewire charging ability from them (around the time the iPhone 3G was released). Some devices weren't compatible and/or didn't charge. I specifically had this issue when I went from the 2G iPhone to the 3G and my Pioneer h/u couldn't read the iPhone 3G.

There have actually been changes since (addition of HDMI and uprating of the component output to VGA), but they've been non-breaking.

There aren't even quality Nexus car docks coming out reliably (Samsung keeps pushing back the date, and the GSM and CDMA/LTE ones are apparently not compatible).

I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

We'll see, once Sprint actually releases theirs.

Most android phone within my experience use plain headphone jacks. And I'm sure that most apple iPhone dock products also have a line in port. Android phones don't use the microusb for audio, just charging and data.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the OP, but if not, I totally agree with you. Op can use a $5 rca-to-headphone cord and any amp/stereo with rca-in will be compatible. Of course OP will need to deal with charging separately.

Not sure what your requirements are for sound, how big a room you're filling but this little number puts out great sound for the size. My coworker picked it up and we use it from time to time in the lab.

FYI - The I heart radio app lets you stream radio stations (definitely FM, not sure about AM) from around the country, in high quality.

Same as Tune In Radio

If you plan to dock the android, good luck as many phones have the docking port in different places. Its easy to find them for iPhone or iPods because the docking port is always in the same place. So you might as well go with any stereo that supports bluetooth.

One option might be to get an AppleTV 2G, jailbreak it, install ATV Flash Black, then XBMC and use the Web Server Remote on XBMC to navigate or control playback. Since it does this via WiFi, the AppleTV just sits hidden away inside the stereo cabinet. As much as I would like to suggest the WDTV Live, which is the same price and supports External USB drives, the WiFi remote is just a remote, you need a HDTV to see what your about to play back. With XBMC, its like navigating your own FTP site, when you can easily see what it is your about to play back. Cheapest way to get XBMC, is via AppleTV (which does not support external USB drives).

NOTE: You can try this out using the Windows or OSX version of XBMC, just need to go into the settings and enable the web browser. Set your phone to WiFi and log into it based on your PCs IP address. If you like what you see, just get an AppleTV off craigslist (often 75$) and jailbreak it. If its a small collection of MP3s, I think AppleTVs sport 16 gb of storage.

Actually, you could use bubbleupnp, I think that's the apps name is, search for dlna and you'll find it. I use that with my Wdtv since it has a dlna client. Either that or imediashare.

I purchased this: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-AS140-37-Fidelio-Docking/dp/B005HY4UG4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327691891&sr=8-1 over holiday. It's great... not sure if that's too small for your needs, but figured it's a start in the direction you may want to go to...

Also, you might have luck with a receiver that has Bluetooth audio. You would then just pair up with your Android and stream that way...no dock though, but it can work!

Good luck!

http://www.amazon.com/Sprint-Bluetooth-Receiver-Connector-Speakers/dp/B003V1619E/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top That plugs in to most ipod connections to connect through bluetooth. I have one I use for by car.
