Cerberus is a life-saver. Video review.. wait for it.

Hopefully I'll never have to use it for its intended purpose.

has anyone successfully used cerberus to recover a stolen phone/tablet yet?

[–]ProbablyGeneralizingGalaxy Nexus- Liquid-Rom- Touchpad-CM9 0 points1 point ago

Haven't lost my phone yet, although I've fiddled around with most of the options and they work as advertised. If there is ever a chance to find the phone, I'd bet it would get the job done. At least as well as any other recovery tool with those same options.

Looks like an amazing app. Can you remotely enable GPS, and can you rename the package (like Theft Aware)?

[–]police_fruitality 2 points3 points ago

I guess another option is (of course) to change Gmail password and recovery phone number as soon as you lose your phone...but what happens if he changes your password and all recovery options first?

They can't change your password without knowing your password. Your account password isn't stored anywhere on the phone. An authentication token is, but that token is only good enough to log into your account and not to reset your password.

As soon as you suspect your phone is lost, change your Google account password. Your phone won't be able to sync, they won't see any new emails.

If you're worried about having your phone stolen, don't use your phone as the recovery phone number. Find someone you trust and use their number.

I guess the best option in general would be using a friend's or family's number as most of us only have one number.

[–]police_fruitality 4 points5 points ago

The number I use is owned by the only person I'd trust to help bury a body if I murder someone, and the person responsible for coming to my house and wiping all of the porn from my computers if I die prematurely.

Google Voice number?

I like Seekdroid. It has all the features I want and is priced well.

Get to love Gmail's 2 stage verification. Thats one way of disabling gmail for them not to get any alerts of lost phones or send the alert to another email address like a loved one or relative

I think there is an antitheft app that works even if you factory reset your phone, but i dont remember the name of it.

Ah nice. I never knew it had that feature.

Cerberus does this too if you flash it from recovery on a rooted phone,

[–]chui101vibrantmtd.cm9 1 point2 points ago

Any rooted phone can do this with any app if you simply move the app to /system/app (remount may be required)

[–]AlbyTheRacistDragonSGS2 (GT-I9100), CM9 1 point2 points ago

Cerberus. If you have root access.

[–]diggsalotmytouch 4g cm 7.2 RC1 0 points1 point ago

The way I do it is root my phone install cyanogenmod do a nandroid back up and install Cerberus

[–]theaaronaHTC HD2, NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.3-CM9 V1.3 0 points1 point ago

I bought and use Theft-Aware, but it seems they've since then been purchased by Avast, so I'm guessing it'll be rolled into their Mobile Security app. Cerberus looks like it shares much of the same features.

edit: typo.

Android Lost, the most comprehensive and totally free option I have found.

[–]geftGNex [AOKP][franco] 1 point2 points ago

I live in China, so if my phone is stolen I can safely assume it's gone for good. The best solution is preventing theft in the first place (i.e. keeping it close to you wherever you are).

Are there any apps that DON'T use SMS? I live in NZ, and have to pay out the arse for international texts. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

[–]beefJeRKy-LBGalaxy Nexus GSM - AOKP M5 0 points1 point ago

You pay to receive texts?

[–]TaubinGalaxy S, 4.0.3 0 points1 point ago

I just found out, that I don't pay to receive. I guess I'll go back to Wavesecure or Seekdroid. Thanks!

[–]colonelsmaashHTC Desire 1 point2 points ago

Has anyone actually used Cerberus or similar to get their phone back? And/or catch the person who stole it?

[–]darkscoutOptimus V 0 points1 point ago

Where's My Droid.

AutomateIT.

PlanB.

Prey.

SMS Enabler Advanced.

PicPush.

I also leave it unlocked/no password. I lost my cellphone once and the people that found it were able to call 'mom' on there. (And I've done this too).

Why multiple ones? Just redundancy. It's also rooted so that it can turn GPS and such on. AutomateIt kicks in when battery hits 30% and kills everything but Radio to save battery. Then I can text GPS on and such to power everything back up.

I also use Wheres My Droid all the time in my apartment.

PicPush so that if they do start taking photos it shows up.

Prey. (The anti-theft software, not to a deity.)

[–]DragonHunter123 points 23 minutes ago. VZW Galaxy Nexus 0 points1 point ago

Thanks captain obvious. I know the difference. I was preempting some orthographically challenged idiot from trying to make a stupid joke.

[–]Phlexonance 0 points1 point ago

By assuming that other people are orthographically challenged, you made yourself look like it

If you were orthographically challenged, my post would have been helpful. Instead you assume mockery and you get unnecessarily defensive.

You should rethink how you interact with strangers.

[–]DragonHunter123 points 23 minutes ago. VZW Galaxy Nexus 0 points1 point ago

You made an incorrect assumption about me based on 9 words (or eight if you count hyphenated words as a single word.) And based on your incorrect assumption, you proceeded to call me out in public and demonstrated to all that your vast intellect and superior interpersonal social skill allows you the unique ability to link to Wikipedia.

Finally, you challenge my behavior with regard to interacting strangers, because, presumably, your behavior is correct?

I may be defensive, but at least I'm not an almighty-high-horse-riding-dickhead.

Now is that one word or five? Because I can't seem to find a Wikipedia article that explains it to me.

My Captivate was stolen on Wednesday and Prey did not work at all. The GPS led to the wrong house and the activation text took about four hours to register. We even got an identical Captivate to test with and the GPS data would vary wildly when parked in the same spot. After half an hour the On-Demand button stopped working and no further reports came, even though I was checking the reports on the test device itself. I'm putting Cerberus on my new phone.

[–]DragonHunter123 points 23 minutes ago. VZW Galaxy Nexus 0 points1 point ago

Interesting, thanks for the review.
