Just so you know, MTP is the only option and that's a great thing. It still lets you transfer anything quickly, without your computer OS mucking with the underlying filesystem. Now our SD cards and partitions can be ext4! For some reason MTP doesn't come with OSX or many Linux Distros, but once you install your drivers you can be on your merry way. Better still movies and music will prompt you to convert if they are in a non-native format.

From my experience, its really slow compared to mass storage.

I can copy 2gb movies to the Nexus via MTP in a minute. That's fast enough for me, it's considerably faster than copying mass storage to my RAZR. Although SD Cards are kind of slow, even the class 6s.

You need to find some MTP drivers for the mac, They don't come built in. Google it up.
