Androiditors, I am going on a road trip tonight after work. What should I install on my phone to make it more fun? (self.Android)
submitted 1 year ago by HonkyTonkHero
Damn Netflix for not having a streaming movie app yet.
[–]gecker 27 points28 points29 points 1 year ago
Nobody wants to admit it, but... a car charger?
[–]pezkiHTC Evo 4g 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
If you don't already have it, Google Skymap is awesome.
[–]HonkyTonkHero[S] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Oh yeah, Skymap rules!
[–]kefs 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago*
not only skymap, but check out the Nasa ISS Sighting opprtunities website for your location.. If it's clear out, it's mind-blowing to watch the space station go by.
edit: seems ppl like this, so here's the link.. just select yer country from the dropdown on the left.

condoms.
[–]HonkyTonkHero[S] 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
No way, condoms suck.
[–]azdesign 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Thats what he said

Hmm, what is this?
EDIT: Nevermind, found it here. Thanks!
[–]ethereal_pixie 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Thank you!
I've recently started Geocaching and man is it fun!
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Snesoid + Chrono Trigger = Win!
[–]magicducksauce 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
or mario rpg ;)
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
or Gbcoid and Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
[–]jorshrod 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Zenonia is great for action RPG on Android, sort of a Zelda + CT merge.
[–]thantikOG Droid x2, GS Vibrant; Lq Gbread, Stock 2.2, Passion V10.5 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I support this too. Not only is it one of the better RPGs out there, but they were cool enough to port over to the Android platform way before a lot of other people.
[–]badalchemist 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
This! I'm at the Giga Gaia fight right now...
[–]Circuit23 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
hell yes! except that i'm having a hell of a time catching this damn mouse thingy (it has the secret of the dome) with the jinky phone controls... oh well, it's certainly better than nothing!
[–]juken 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
The application "Wardrive"
[–]entropikone 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
a must when going through new locations :)
[–]shocker4256Transformer, Prime | Droid 1, MIUI -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago
Can you explain why you would use wardrive? I'm really confused as to its use
[–]juken 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Just fun to map wireless networks out, especially "strange" ones on the highway.
[–]thantikOG Droid x2, GS Vibrant; Lq Gbread, Stock 2.2, Passion V10.5 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Someone really needs to make an MMO where you level up by collecting wifi points, rofl
[–]NiflheimMoto Milestone, CM 7.1 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
Dude, all the fun of a road trip is the road trip itself. Forget your phone and enjoy the ride.
[–]HonkyTonkHero[S] 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
Ha, it a road trip that includes in-laws, dogs and babies so I need distractions.
[–]CopDoctorAstronaut 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
O god. You should download the white noise app and bring a good set of headphones.
Good luck, my friend.
[–]ThisIsADogHello 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
What kind of dog?
[–]dontalk2yourself 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
The game Alchemy is fun, and will burn up some road trip time. You could always try tethering your laptop to get netflix...
No Netflix linux support either...not a happy customer right now.
[–]geruszSGS2 GT-I9100, Rooted stock 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Have you tried it with Wine? (I don't even have Netflix where I live, so It's just a wild guess... might even work.)
[–]lunigma 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Netflix under WINE doesn't work because Silverlight under WINE doesn't work, and that's what Netflix uses.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Moonlight with a user agent string change?
[–]lunigma 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago*
Moonlight doesn't support DRM which is needed for the streaming, as far as I know.
Those motherfuckers. :(
They should implement it anyway. The purpose of DRM is lame, so I have no problem with defeating it.
[–]zachtibGoBuddy 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
no idea about wine, but virtual machines work, and was what I used to use for Netflix on Linux. I think I've heard online that running the windows version of firefox in wine can work, though
[–]gregny2002Galaxy Nexus, Stock 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Have any decent DVDs out from netflix atm?
I have been reading a lot about Alchemy, I will give it a go, thanks!
[–]jorshrod 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Alchemy is fun... I've unlocked about 75 elements so far, sort of stuck.
[–]LiftingTheVeil 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Trapster - warn and be warned of speed traps, police checkpoints, etc.
[–]vajorie 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
kills the battery (way too fast), and is too slow (on N1)... must have some kind of bug...
[–]LiftingTheVeil 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I use a charger in the car. GPS constantly does make the battery hot... SetCPU can be set to underclock when that happens.
[–]Bizurke 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Raging Thunder 2 has kept me busy during many long bus rides. I would try to find stuff that doesn't require a fast (or any) data connection if you are going to be outside of populated areas. You can always just load some movies or tv shows on it as well.
[–]HonkyTonkHero[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I will check out Raging Thunder 2. I would love to load up some movies, but I am stuck at work all day with no data cable, so I am limited to the Android Market.
[–]monsdaLTE Galaxy Nexus 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
dropbox - no cables needed. It also makes installing apk's that you download on your computer easy.
Hell yes, I have been using dropbox since the beta, and I couldn't go without it. I was really happy to find the app for dropbox in the market.
[–]yawgmoth 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
One of my apps: BAC Calc
Not because the app is really that fun but because it will give you an awesome excuse to drink.
/shameless plug
Shit, this is awesome. As a raging alcoholic I will be using this on an hourly basis.
[–]imusuallydrunk 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
.159 drive in 6 hours????? is that right?! this thingi s broken man i feel fine
[–]yawgmoth 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
are you sure you put your information in right? (If you are, in fact, usually drunk you might want bump up the tolerance to 'scotsman')
[–]imusuallydrunk 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
probably not im kinda fucked up. i cant just blow into it ?
[–]simianspaceman 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Grooveshark all the way! I had it on my phone on a cross country road trip. It was awesome. The power of the tubes!
I was using Pandora, but I am installing Grooveshark now to give it a go
[–]simianspaceman 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
you can play individual songs instead of just listening to a station. When i was on my trip it was the old supper buggy version. The new one should be awesome to que from the road.
[–]SnacksOnAPlane 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Shortyz! For crossword puzzles!
Some twitter client, obviously. I prefer twicca.
Floodit.
A podcast aggregator (I use BeyondPod) and the [Stuff You Should Know](www.howstuffworks.com/stuff-you-should-know-podcast.htm) podcasts. So informative, so funny. Also get This American Life, The Moth, and Dan Carlin's Common Sense if you're at all into politics.
The Kindle app, and some books!
Pandora and Grooveshark for music.
[–]HeliosTrickGalaxy Nexus LTE, Droid X, Xoom 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Shortyz is definitely amazing if you dig crosswords. Also BlowUp and Word Drop.
[–]kebernet 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Aww. I'm touched. :P I use Google Listen for podcasts. It isn't perfect, but I love that I can manage subscriptions from Reader.
[–]stoplightHTC Incredible 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I just got back from a week long road trip. These are the apps I found useful:
Also be sure your camera settings save your pictures to your sd card. At least with my Incredible it saved them to the phone and I couldnt figure out how to get them off the phones internal memory without copying all of the pictures to my SD card >_<
Downloading the yelp and sudoku apps right now. I wish I had an SD card, but I haven't gotten one for the Captivate yet. :/
Music. Lots.
I also recommend Shark or Die, Pirates and Traders, Criticality (if you are into Reversi-like board games) and Droplets 2.0 Free.
Other non-game apps I could recommend: Laputa reader (it has lots of books in the Blazer repository, though their legality is at least questionable (Harry Potter 1-7 for free? C'mon...)) and HumanJapanese Lite (if you want to start learning Japanese... why not? Start it once before leaving, it must download its audio files first!)
For music - subsonic is really cool. Won't really work if your music is on your laptop and you plan on packing it with you.
[–]frickingenius 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Definitely friction. If you have cash it's six bucks for gameboid and rom buddy which is a battery drain, but you can have Pokemon red on your phone.
[–]HonkyTonkHero[S] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I use DroidEmu right now, it has emulators for SNES, NES, Genisis, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color & Gamegear, and lets you download roms from the program its self.
Any advantage to having the separate emulators? And downloading friction right now, thanks!
no real advantage, it's just the first one i found and it is very stable. But DroidEmu sounds much better I'm going to check it out now.
[–]kefs 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
maybe a timelapse app so you can make a few timelapses of your adventures?
[–]gecker 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Yes! an app that takes a picture every 10 minutes and uploads it to your favorite picture sharing website.
[–]noPENGSinALASKAGalaxy Nexus, Stock rooted 4.0.2, Verizon 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Zombies run.
Ah good call. I usually turn it off so folks don't see the seedy areas of town I frequent, but this would be useful.
[–]shocker4256Transformer, Prime | Droid 1, MIUI 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Google tracks does this too
[–]iLamaGalaxy Nexus 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Tracks does this but latitude is current there's no need to stop recording and upload your whereabouts.
[–]middlegeek 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I have enjoyed playing Checkers
[–]smileythomMotorola Bionic stock, nookColor CM7.1 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Wordfeud (Scrabble like game). There's even a post from a couple weeks ago with redditors who want to play.
Ahh, I missed that post, feel free to add driftinoutlaw!
[–]ashagari 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Mortplayer, an audio book reader.
Falling Ball...that game is addicting...and frustrating
[–]oddlike7 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
It's not as cool as some of the other suggestions, but I vote for Kindle. Reading is always a good escape, at least for myself.
[–]davidron 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
If you use Google Reader, then install NewsRob to sync your Google Reader feeds. Offline access is useful when you are without reception and bored. http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.newsrob
