Ugh. It's pretty sad that as phones become more and more advanced (not there's anything wrong with that), the one core function which makes them phones at all appears to be the only thing not being improved.

I think it's because the actual voice is carried through an archaic system. voip is the future <.< ...

Agreed... free void ftw. Data only plans are the future.

Damn, what the hell do they consider to have good fucking voice quality?

Not many phones have great call quality. My Milestone (Droid) has a noticeable hiss sound, and my Nexus One isn't great either. Not many people use their phone primarily for calls anymore, so many don't notice poorer quality in audio.

Odd is that they do not recommend the iPhone 4 due yo the antenna issue but still give it the highest score of all phones reviewed.

Because if you look beyond that, it is still a nice friggin phone. Beautiful screen, awesome camera, and nice industrial design.

I had a iPhone 4 which I got the day before release and I thought it was a nice device. Solid hardware, great screen, and worked well. But the antenna issue drove me crazy. I had a case on my phone so it didn't impact me, but knowing it existed was enough to make me get rid of the phone, so my sister purchased it from me. She is not a techie, and she absolutely loves the phone.

I use my Nexus One as my primary device and it is a solid phone, but the hardware isn't as good as the iPhone 4. And I am not talking spec sheets.

Nexus One + Sense UI = Win in my book.

I hate to nitpick but in this case I'd be annoyed with myself if I didn't.

The definition of "phone" hasn't changed AFAIK. A phone has a very simple function: To make and accept calls. If you're having a significant problem performing that function, you've got a terrible phone.

From that standpoint, the iPhone 4's that are experiencing this issue are terrible phones (but great iPod Touch's).

As someone who actually owned one, let me say that at no point was I ever unable to make or receive calls with the antenna issue. As a matter of fact, the iPhone 4 constantly displayed 2-3 more signal bars than my iPhone 3GS (which we learn is actually due to a miscalculation). Even when trying to drop a call while holding the "gap", I was unable to. It would just drop down to 1 bar of service and the call would continue to work.

The major issue for me was data. 3G data would stop for me, which I demonstrated in not one, but two youtube videos. That is an issue, making or receiving calls was never an issue.

I can corroborate your statement as I never had any issue with calling when I used an iPhone 4. This is why I said specifically "the iPhone 4's that are experiencing this issue are terrible phones".

The unfortunate fact is that it is occurring for enough individuals to be more than a coincidence.

The Nexus one should also be under AT&T since you can buy it out of contract.

The fine print mentions that.

Interesting how the MyTouch 3g slide is ranked equal to (or slightly higher than?) the Nexus One under T-Mobile on that image. Does anybody actually agree with that? I guess it has a keyboard.

The MyTouch slide is amazing. I've never had an N1, but I drooled over them from January until getting my Slide for father's day.

The keyboard is perfect for typing (or playing games) - the keys are rounded and spaced, not square and right up against each other like other phones.

The nexus is obviously faster, but the Slide doesn't feel slow, and it has Sense. The only area I see where it really lags behind other phones is screen resolution, but I only know that from spec sheets - it looks great.

They forgot the LG Ally for Verizon. Old as it may be, they still offer it.

Evo rated as the best non-iPhone smartphone. Lot of haters out there, but as someone who uses it daily, I love it. Two methods to obtain dramatically longer batter life (based on my experience): 1) Only turn on 4G when you want to use it. 2) Do not use the Latitude widget.

:(

Unfortunately, that Qualcomm snapdragon isn't as snappy as those A8's - same with the EVO's GPU vs the ones built into the A8's.

Am I mistaken or is the main issue with the EVOs lacking in graphics performance because it relies too much on the CPU for graphics processing and not the GPU? I heard with some software changes this could be improved drastically in the future.

That would be fantastic if that were the case, but that doesn't sound right - why would they have put energy towards redirecting graphics processing away from a standard GPU in OpenGL? That'd be much slower and less energy efficient.

Agreed, just looking for affirmation on the contrary.

I fucking hate ConsumerReports.

How does any phone get rated on "messaging"? Even the ones with keyboards had shit scores, wtf?
