I use a teeny Sansa Clip+ for storage just as I would a regular USB key. Has a microSD reader, too. No drivers required.

Will I be able to listen to those songs after dumping them or can it only be used as storage?

Sure. Just dump your files on the Clip, organize them by folders as you wish. When you disconnect the player it will first refresh its library to see what's new and what's missing, after that the songs are ready to be played.

EDIT: typo. Oh and I see people recommend Rockbox. Rockbox's very nice, but unfortunately it's still flaky on Clip v2 and Clip+.

Came here just to post about Rockbox. It adds insane levels of functionality.

The Clip+ features a 128x66 OLED screen. Technically, the thing is only supposed to be capable of displaying solid blue on one part of the screen, and solid yellow on another.

In Rockbox, you can play Doom on the thing, emulate the classic Gameboy, view jpegs, and even watch video. I'd hardly use the thing as a PMP/gaming device, but they're incredible tech demos, if nothing else.

There's so much more to love when you play with a Sansa Clip+ MP3 player-for big sound and lots of features in a tiny package . Listen to up to 2,000 songs†† on your 8GB* player with amazing sound quality, FM radio, long-life battery, voice recorder and a memory card slot, too. And expand your fun indefinitely with slotRadio™ or slotMusic™ cards** preloaded with tunes ready to pop into the player's memory card slot.

I have a Sansa (no plus) so it only has on board storage, but you can dump files onto it from any computer that can read and write to a FAT file system, and it has a standard mini-B connector (huge plus to me)

Sansa + Rockbox is amazing. Or just sansa by itself, but you can dual boot.

My oldass Creative Zen Touch works as a portable storage device.

You could use the ipod classic with Rockbox otherwise... i THINK the Creative Zen players support what you're asking, or maybe the Archos players... although i think both companies only make flash based MP3 players now, maxing out at about 64Gb and costing way too much... whereas the Classic is 160Gb

No experience with the Zune, which is the only other player that i know of to use HDD's.

Well Archos and Sansa both make an mp3 player that is literally a USB key with a 1/8th jack but honestly, just go with the clip. The Sansa one had a few problems and seemed to be a bit spotty on the SQ, though it is a really cool concept.

It's funny because you can use your iPod Touch like that with the installation of an app like Files. Just dump in ANYTHING (videos, MP3, PDF) and Files will serve it up. But doesn't custom software have a lot to do with organizing what's on your player? That's why I don't mind iTunes for example because if I just dump all my files in how am I going to make lists and find what I want?

The problem is that I use multiple computers and with a custom software, I'm locked to using only one of them as my "syncher".

Floola manages the ipod quite well. And you can just keep the executable on the storage of the mp3 player and access it by usb.
