I always wondered why my computer slowed down while I was masturbating.

Thanks, YouTube.

Nowadays, that could just as easily be a comment on reddit.

I thought it was pretty funny. I can envision a 50 year old man yelling like that at 3 in the morning.

[–]Phallic 8 points9 points ago

Yes, you can envision that.

If you really want to.

That could always have been a reddit comment. Reddit hasn't changed a bit.

I'll keep that in mind next time im screaming at the top of my lungs with my hands covered around a single disk

You accidentally typed an s where you wanted a c.

[–]pedropants 1 point2 points ago

That causes a jump in latency? I thought that caused a jump in something else.

Is it possible to use noise canceling technology to counteract the vibrations? Or at least find a noise canceling frequency for the constant background noise of the air conditioning?

[–]tjvanpat 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The air conditioning is not what you hear. While the under floor cooling isn't quiet, it's likely the not the biggest source of vibration. There are many fans (large and small) along with many other drives that are all spinning very fast. Tiny vibrations caused by all of them add up to quite a bit. Yet another benefit of 2.5" drives and SSDs.

Just a part of what you get if you turn on "transcribe audio": "Thank you, migration... Mike Tyson."

EDIT: "Just don't look for that dr katz"... Cracked me up!

"but the dell vikings if you think the Chinese Clinton put foward to melt"

I didn't know about the transcribe feature, this is going to keep me entertained for a while. Thanks!

Any idea on the application he is using for monitoring the disk latency ?

Now I know- my mom's computer really does get slower to piss her off as she's shouting at it.

[–]sassanix 2 points3 points ago

Damn so if I'm listening to loud music my computer would slow down from the vibrations.

[–]cccmikey 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In a laptop, some notes may even stop the drive all together for as long as the note is played :) .. which can cause the music to repeat luck a stuck CD making it necessary to either hold your laptop really hard to damp the vibration, plug in headphones, or reboot.

Now there's a weird prank DOS concept for you - monitor disk IO, max the mixer, blast a sine wave of increasing frequency while performing IO, find the resonant frequency, and .. profit?

[–]xazarus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never heard of this. Can you show me an example of this happening, or a way I can try it out? (Assuming it won't do any permanent damage?)

[–]cccmikey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmm, probably the easiest way is to start copying a large file to another drive, and while you're doing that, play music through your laptop, loud. I've only had one laptop do it so far. If your copying stops - watch target HDD light, you'll be there. No guarantee you won't lose data, but it's unlikely.

I'm glad you posted this. I was just talking about this with my little brother today and hadn't gotten a chance to look for it. Lo and behold, I pull up Reddit and there it is. So thank you bntly for resubmitting this, and apparently listening in on my every thought and conversation. I'm going to go wear some tin foil on my head and lie down in the fetal position for a week or fifteen.

6 month Reddit rule: You're bound to have a conversation about something you saw on Reddit within 6 months. At that point in time, you will again see the topic of your conversation while browsing Reddit.

The best part of this for me is imagining the situation that caused them to discover it.

They should break the latency out by disk and plot it in a 2d array that matches the physical layout.

Wow, do sysadmins have to face so much background noise?

[–]Dax420 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah man. I practically lived in that environment for a couple years. It's fucking cold too. It gets to the point where you can't even think straight because of the background noise.

That's a modern day factory then. Reminds me of that photo I saw of a Google datacenter in the middle of nowhere, with smoke coming out of huge chimneys.

The guy in this video looks exactly like this guy i work with and even has the same accent. He even works with enterprise storage (ds8000). The names don't match though. I think I need to solve this mystery somehow...
