And it's a clicky pen. I'll be switching as soon as they come out (as long as they live up to their claims.) I can't stand pens with caps, clicky pens forever!

Pilot G2 pens are by far my favorite. Extra points for them not smearing. (I'm a lefty)

[–]SgtFish 5 points6 points ago

They're probably the best pens you'll find at local stores like Wal-Mart or Target, but there's far better pens out there if you're willing to dig (e.g. Energels or Hybrid Gel Grips).

you know I loved the V5 but by far working in automotive or anything where you moving a lot with the pen in your pocket the G2 takes the cake. I have had every single V5 break and leak ink on me.

sad face. I have lost every V5 I have ever owned... I have to keep buying them. I think they "wander off." Also when I put them in my pants pocket, I reach in and grab stuff and it slides out when I pull out my hand... sad times. I sometimes imagine they are all escaping from me, and they all get together in some secret meeting place and celebrate their freedom.

My employees don't allow me to have clicky pens anymore. I click them. Incessantly. And whatever the word is for doing it with knowing, like "unknowingly" or "unwittingly".

[–]moush 2 points3 points ago

Clicky pens are far inferior though. Air exposure is what makes you have to scribble sometimes to get ink to come out.

[–]smithson23 1 point2 points ago

Well, wait until you lose that cap and see what air exposure does to your now unprotected tip.

[–]Ag-E 6 points7 points ago

So they smudge really easily? That was the primary thing I was concerned about.

[–]numlok 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wouldn't say really easily. It takes a bit of pressure. A normal hand-glide over it shouldn't do much, but if you bear down a bit, it might end up wiping some off.

Also, it doesn't really smudge... the ink kind of "pills up" (kind of like rubber cement), leaving a slightly erased part. From what I can tell from my limited tests, it doesn't leave any real smear on hands or paper.

[–]numlok 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for mentioning that.
I went back and checked it, and it seems imgur is totally messing up the album for some reason.
I've re-uploaded them, and have created a new album, but there still seem to be issues (doubles of some pics, non-displaying images, etc.).
I only took 4 photos, all of which are displayed at the beginning of the album, so please disregard any other "garbage" that is getting added past those.
BTW: Here's the updated link to the image you were initially missing.

[–]meankangaroo 1 point2 points ago

From the video it looks like it erases well. Does it?

[–]numlok 2 points3 points ago

The only thing left is the indentation on the paper.

[–]DaemonXI 0 points1 point ago

Fuck yeah, Officemax! I'd know that shelf label anywhere.

[–]Cedric_Evilciser 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry for the late reply, was at work. I actually bought some during my shift today. They're very hit or miss.

They write pretty smoothly and once on paper, it does look similar to a pencil. Probably fine for jotting notes but doesn't seem to be a replacement for the pencil as a sketch tool.

It also seems the output changes depending on what angle you hold the "pen" at. Felt awkward to me but a co-worker loved it. Probably not worth the $4.99 OfficeMax sells them for at the moment but if you can find them cheaper, worth a shot.

[–]thraex 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just got it too, it's great. It smudges less than a normal ballpoint pen, and it comes off perfectly with the eraser. So far so good!

[–]thraex 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just called OfficeMax and you're right, they do have them. They're $4.99 for a 2 pack. I'm going to pick some up.

[–]Jdban 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I went to an officemax yesterday and they didn't have em, and tried to point me to the sharpie section and blow me off (they weren't there). Then I called a second and they also didn't have them.

[–]thraex 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had to talk to several employees until a manager knew exactly what I was talking about, and went in the back. They were not in the sharpie section, but towards the back of the store in a big bucket thing with stuff for sale. That's just here, tho, maybe they don't have them in stock where you are, sorry.

[–]Jdban 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hmm. When I was at the store, I asked a girl who didn't know ANYTHING, she asked a guy who was like "No, we don't have those in yet" so he seemed legit. She tried to send me to the sharpie aisle, he just said they didn't have any.

Both times I called (2 different stores) they put me on hold, then said they didn't have them in stock.

[–]Jdban 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, can you describe this area further? If I'm gonna go to a store, I want to know where to look. It's a bucket thing in the back? Near any specific area of the store?

As an art student, the joy in using graphite is it's ability to smudge and create nice gradients in figure drawings without being too messy, like charcoal is.

I can't imagine a non-smudging graphite... and personally, I would love it very much if this did smudge and eventually become permanent! I hope very much that it does... then I could use it and I wouldn't need to use a sealant on my drawings anymore.

[–]psyne 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Since it's liquid, though, I'd worry it's going to be a lot harder to vary lightness/darkness through pressure. If I draw with a liquid pen the closest I can control is the thickness of the line. I'm sure it would have its uses, but I can't see it totally replacing normal graphite pencils for drawing. But maybe future pencil packs will start having H, HB, 2B, and Liquid!

[–]LieselMeminger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm going to buy a bunch of them, crack them open and poor the liquid into a cup. And then try painting with it. Because I can. That is, assuming it's closer to a liquid than a gel.

I tend to like bold lines and hatching/stippling more than gradients anyhow. So I'll find use for them either way. :D

Yes, though not in the same way as a pencil or the older-style erasable pens.
The ink of this one kind of "pills up" under your palm if you drag it across, leaving a partially erased patch on the paper. It doesn't seem to leave much on your hand though.
You do have to use a bit of pressure to get it to do this though, and I'm not sure how often it would occur under normal usage.

[–]jenivic -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was my thought too. You finish writing notes and then you have to let it air out for three days rather than turning the page. I'll defiantly try this out, but as of this moment I am skeptical.

Interesting. I've only ever heard "scantron" used to refer to machine-readable multiple-choice test answer sheets of the sort used for standardized tests. They're named after the company that makes them, so perhaps the same company designed the computer test.

[–]ElBeh 3 points4 points ago

[–]drexhex 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like taking notes and doing any sort of math in pencil, but I don't want to have to sharpen the tip or rotate the pencil in order to have the sharp end on the correct side, so this seems perfect.

[–]siege_tank 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mechanical pencils were created so you don't have to rotate your wooden pencil to keep it sharp. It's quite a burden, so mechanical pencils really do a lot for pencil advocates.

[–]drexhex 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I still rotate it because one of the sides is always sharper than the other, even if it's a small difference. It bothers me on an OCD-level.

[–]boredzo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You might like the Kuru Toga mechanical pencil. It rotates the lead within the pencil as you write, so as to always maintain a more-or-less conical point on the lead.

It's pretty hard to find in the US, but OfficeMax's website has it for $7.

[–]MrDectol 2 points3 points ago

Pilot beat them to the punch by about a year with the Frixion... and you can erase it any time you want:

http://www.pilot.co.jp/products/pen/ballpen/gel_ink/frixionball/

[–]behtyas 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sharpie's major point is that it can be erased for three days, but after that it's permanent like almost all of their products. The idea most likely being if you haven't changed it in three days, you don't intend to erase/change it, but would rather it remain.

Somewhat ingenious IMHO.

[–]turnyouracslaterup 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Worst thing about Frixion? It erases not with friction but with heat. Imagine my surprise when I left my notebook full of notes in my car in the summer heat, only to find all of my notes gone. After a lot of freaking out (I could sorta see the impressions in the paper made by the pen), I googled it and found that if you put the notebook in the freezer, the ink comes back.

So, yeah. I'd rather have something more permanent than Frixion pens. I bought a bunch of them and then get annoyed because there are numerous times you don't want it: writing checks, addressing envelopes, etc.

[–]DaemonXI 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Papermate still makes erasable ink IIRC.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't know why you got a downvote... I have two erasable ink pens from Japan as well, they're convenient to use. The color is not as intense, but they don't smudge and remain forever erasable. As far as I know, they never become permanent. (Which is more useful, in my opinion.)

[–]clarkster 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love the innovations of writing technology when kids these days are getting worse and worse at writing due to spending extreme amounts of time on computers and teachers requiring typed reports now. for example: the two kids of the people I live with. Four year old can type here name, say her abc's but can't write a damn thing. The 11 year old can kind of write but its not legible, but he can type like nobody's business.

Long story short = better pens, awesome technologies... but a decline of hand written word. The death of the pen as an everyday object is near.

[–]MysteriousCraic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember the day I turned in a paper written in cursive and my teacher called me lazy, because I didn't type it on the computer. That was the last day I used cursive for anything besides my signature.

I was damn good back then too.

[–]DaCrazyDingo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I got told in elementary school that high school would require written cursive reports, high school said college would. I never turned in a cursive handwritten report in high school or college because my teachers and college professors said do not hand write them because they won't grade them. I had great cursive.

I can't fucking stand BB. Here's where they got the story from:

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/08/sharpie-reinvents-pen-with-liquid-pencil/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+GearFactor+%28Blog+-+Gadget+Lab+%28Gear+Factor%29%29

EDIT: And here's where Wired got the story from:

http://blog.sharpie.com/2010/08/introducing-the-new-sharpie-liquid-pencil/

EDIT: I removed the verbiage suggesting their story was plagiarized.

Take a chill pill. They didn't steal shit. The article says

[Sharpie via Wired]

and links to both the Wired article and the Sharpie blog.

BoingBoing's dry, two-sentence overview of the story told by Sharpie's own press release image bears no resemblance to the ponderous and jovial Wired blurb. None. There's not a single turn of phrase or choice of tone in common.

Feel free to rag on BoingBoing for being a blog that aggregates other blogs, but don't just make shit up to support your whining.

BB is the anus of the fucking internet. A bunch of self-important assholes who feel their opinion is far more important than everyone else's, and they stopped writing or reporting anything new, unique or interesting a long, long time ago.

The 3 day limit kills it. For me, it's all or nothing... it either erases or doesn't. In a pencil situation, this would be as useful to me as a pen. I still appreciate the innovation though.

Say you were doing a mural on a wall. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to sketch out the whole thing over the course of two days, spot your mistakes, fix them, then come back in a few days and have a permanent outline already done?

Per Cedric_Evilciser's comment about them being currently available at Office Max, I went out and bought a pack to test.

Here's my quick imgur gallery (*see below) of them.

edit: Oh for fuck's sake... imgur keeps hosing my albums. Here are the individual image links:
1 - @ Office Max
2 - Front
3 - Back
4 - Test/Sample

My quick takes:
$4.99
Kind of "gloopy" starts and stops. Not as smooth as I had hoped.
Smudges, but not like pencil or pen. Only does so with a decent amount of pressure. The ink kind of "pills up", and leaves a lighter/erased area underneath, but with little on your hand.
"#2 Lead Equivalent"
Erases very easily and very cleanly.
Not bad, but not "OMG! BEST PEN EVARRR!" either.

[–]ikimashokie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just threw out a liquid pencil that I bought back in 2002 or whenever it was gel pens were becoming popular. It was a graphite suspension, fully erasable, even though it wrote and erased horribly.

Maybe the ones by Sharpie will be better than the Wally's three pack for $1.97, but I've grown to be pencil snob and don't like to write with anything larger than 0.5mm.

I do love sharpie pens. But does the ink erase completely like a real pencil? Most erasable pens do not erase all the way and they just seem to make your paper look sloppy.

it become permanent... any time i've ever used pens like that any friction, from the eraser or otherwise, will cause the ink to rub off

[–]LeonGrey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I recall using those a lot a long time ago when they first came out. I do believe they had the same effect as the sharpie pencil. Over time, they became increasingly hard to erase. Maybe not permanent, but you certainly couldn't erase it cleanly after it had been sitting for a week.

[–]get_rhythm 1 point2 points ago

The "erasable pen" concept has been around since the 50s. Sharpie just has the science of how long the ink takes to set into paper down more precisely.

[–]HNW -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd think this would be similar to erasable pens in the 80's. No one uses them becuase erasable ink easily smears and erase and in business or school you don't want that.

[–]Aff3ct -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

God I want this. I don't want to wait 2-5 weeks like Amazon says.

Fuck you, Sharpie. Keep a lid on this shit until you can physically deliver.
