Does the SD card stay out like that, or is that just for demonstration?

Why is it that every player that supports FLAC out of the box is cursed with a small disk space or an inconvenient means of storage? When will I be able to get a DAP with a decent DAC, big hard drive (or preferably, 128gb flash) and FLAC support?

The Archos 5/7 support FLAC out of the box, and you can get the 5 with up to a 500GB HDD.

I completely agree. Given the price, they could at least have a bigger flash drive (64 gb at least).

It doesn't have a flash drive.

$800 seems pretty crazy for a "portable" music player. The MP3 players they used to compare were pretty basic, I would be interested to see how the sound quality of a Cowon compares to this HM-801.

I have a uDAC and Sansa Fuze (rockbox'd)....and while using the Audeo PFE IEM's, I can tell little to no difference in the sound quality. The Fuze is a $50 MP3 player with almost 24 battery life. I just don't see the benefit to spending that much money on a device like the HM-801. You would be better served to get a good pair of headphones, mp3 player and good sound card...and still have a couple hundred left over.

I never could figure out what the U-K-2K variants of the PCM1704 were. Never mentioned anywhere.

Just looks like purchasing options. Maybe for batch consistency?

As in specifically U-K-2K. U-K is highest grade. Maybe the 2K is some super-high grade that's never mentioned because it's so awesome. Sigh.

Have you built your own player before?

Nothing audio since college. Looks easy (famous last words), maybe I'll try it.

Cowon players have amazing sound quality when considering BBE+ effects and EQ customization, however their flat sound is nothing special (Zune level). When comparisons are done with Cowon players, they are typically done with BBE Viva.

This player most likely has amazing flat sound (and hopefully has great EQ). In all honesty, the difference in sound is going to be minor, and that is why audiophiles would buy it. I cannot say, but I feel that given the price the difference is not enough, but for some it is.

High end player and high end speakers to listen to compressed music files. Hilarious....

I'm getting flashbacks to the Monster Speaker Cable vs wire coat hangar sound tests.

People that are this serious about audio quality will use FLAC or other lossless formats. I agree it would be silly to pay all this and then listen to 128Kbps MP3s.
