Don't forget ray guns. We've got to have jet packs, flying cars, and ray guns before it's officially the future.

Moller has been working on a personal VTOL for ages. They missed the last target date of 2010 for production. They're so close, I just want them to get on with it, dammit!

Yeah, there's very little evidence any of their stuff actually works (for any value of "works"), I'll still hope just a little bit though. You won't see me ever giving them money though. I don't even really want a flying car, I just want people to stop bitching about it: "You have your flying cars, and they suck! They were a bad idea! Get over it!"

Sadly, as another poster commented, it's the crosswinds that will prevent us from using these in their current iteration, not to mention the brick that the FAA will shit when they see these things...

I'm a pilot (private license) and I see about 14 FAR/AIM regs that would be broken trying to land this thing at my office.

That being said, I did forward the link to my wife this morning to let her know that one day I would be purchasing something like this...

[–]sirgallium 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Harrier jets and others have actual ducted jets. So a jetpack could be made, and gas turbines are much more fuel efficient than IC engines. It would cost too much though, same reason cars don't have gas turbine engines.

[–]Autoclave 2 points3 points ago

[–]retrogamer500 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am still waiting for a video of it flying above ground effect.

[–]alexs 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wikipedia claims that ground effect for helicopters occurs within 1 blades length of the ground. The fans aren't even that close to the ground at lift off in this design. Then again they are also ducted and running at unusually high RPMs I expect so perhaps the ground effect has longer range in this setup.

[–]you_are_wrong 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ground effect on rotorcraft (as opposed to wing-in-ground effect) is due to minimization of the rotor tip vortex. The idea of prop shrouds is to reduce this very problem. Ducted fans don't have these vortices (as the prop tips are shrouded), so it's not applicable.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So.... its like a really expensive Allterrain Segway?

[–]Preston4tw 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was wondering how one might go about designing a jet pack without obvious controls like this has to be more Segway-esque. You could probably do left-right orientation by looking, and forward / backward movement by leaning / tilt like the segway, but I can't think of how you might control vertical movement.

ground effect

[–]you_are_wrong 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure if you're agreeing with my cryptic criticism but:

At a rotor height of one-half rotor diameter, the thrust is increased about 7 percent. At rotor heights above one rotor diameter, the thrust increase is small and decreases to zero at a height of about 1 1/4 rotor diameters.

The jetpack is clearly above this height in the video.

[–]retrogamer500 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a ducted fan, and I'm not sure if it follows the same rules as a helicopter, even if they are fairly similar.

[–]you_are_wrong 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't. Ducted fans have prop shrouds, which mitigate rotor tip vortices--and therefore they experience no thrust advantage by being in proximity with a surface, such as the ground.

[–]captainAwesomePants 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Has video of an unthered flight been released? I'm not even going to start believing them until I see that. This reminds me to much of that Moller asshole.

They'll get a bunch of publicity and a little capital from the announcement, then dissapear. A few years from now they'll make another announcement and every media outlet will get excited because 'This time they're really going to do it!"

[–]alexs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

RTFA? They show it flying indoors with no tether. In fact pretty much all the videos I've seen of this have no tether. It's definitely a functional machine. I don't think they have FAA approval for it though and so can't fly it at out doors (or at least at any considerable altitude.)

[–]nooneelse 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They could/should fly it inside one of those huge blimp factory buildings.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The video shows about the height and speed I would trust this device at. The reason why we will never, ever see personal jetpacks as anything more than a novelty is because the failure mode is catastrophic. Lose a fuel line? Might as well pretend you're swimming on the way down.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Parachutes deploy 100% of the time and are super effective from all altitudes.

[–]pedropants 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, not 100%, but maybe 90%.

It's just about managing risk. All aircraft have similar types of risk, so it's all about the actual probabilities vs. benefits.

Most of us climb into automobiles on a regular basis, and those things are PROVEN DEATHTRAPS, but we feel the benefits outweigh the risks.

Others of us wacky humans jump out of airplanes, or climb aboard a very high-risk space shuttle and rocket into space, or smoke cigarettes, or eat too much junk food...

As for me, I'll be dreaming about using one of these to zoom straight up 1000 feet and loving every minute of it!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The risk from automobiles is from other automobiles or operating them recklessly. The risk from these things is from operating them, period. Compared to these jetpacks, helicopters are a paragon of safety.

Like I said, I can see this being a novelty, like sky jumping, but it will never be adopted as regular transportation in significant numbers. Imagine hundreds of thousands of jetpacks in the air over a major city at rush hour. Imagine two of these colliding and cutting out 500 feet over your bedroom roof.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure sure buzzkill, so all those fantastic clean regulated cities of the future wont have them, but in an unregulated chaotic cesspool metropolis, where you can get away with killing someone if the bribe is right, boy I see me some flying in the future for sure.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most of those people lived. You have a software glitch at 500 feet and you're just a red smear that hasn't happened yet.

[–]alexs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's wrong with it being a novelty? There are loads of small aircraft pilots, glider pilots and paraglider pilots out there and they all have fairly catatrosphic failure modes and also pretty much just used for entertainment.

Sure, it's hilariously dangerous that doesn't mean plenty of people won't want one. Assuming you can actually get approval for these things to fly around populated areas (or at all) then I wouldn't even be surprised to see the occasional person fly to work on one.

Never underestimate people's willingness to do recklessly dangerous stuff for lulz.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

This has been around for a while however I have never seen a video of anyone flying it outside, where wind would affect it. Its always been flown inside, and often tethered.

Until I see it in a real world example then its not really suitable. I gather the problem they had with it was the potential to flip over when moving forward with any speed.

They were going to write software to automatically prevent it, but the absence of anyone actually flying it outisde seems to me like its not ready yet.

[–]PlacentaJuan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]stromm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just think this would be so hard to police that they'll just ban them. I live in a mostly rural area about 30 miles from the center of a major city. I see an ultralight about once every few months. I see small 2-4 seat planes from the local private airport every day. But all of those take more space to take-off and land then a yard or normal driveway.

One of these could take off from a patio, fly you down the road one normally commutes and right to the roof or sidewalk at work. Heck, if they sold this for thirty grand, I could see a flood of people using one instead of their car. Imagine the mess...
