HP's Windows 7 Slate Strikes at the iPad (wired.com)

Dear every tech blog,
Not every tablet is intending to compete with the iPad. In fact, you yourself state that dell has had this tablet designed long before the ipad was even announced.
HP released a video introducing its tablet called the Slate that will run Windows 7 operating system and support Flash — a jab at the iPad, which will not display Flash-based sites or videos.
You should be embarrassed for including this in your article. HP didn't decide to include flash, they decided to use Windows 7. Additionally, using Windows 7 wasn't a jab at the iPad, it was a business decision.
tl;dr the world of tablet doesn't revolve around the iPad, stop acting as if it does!
Sincerely, JMerm

Agreed. I'm using a tablet pc (Lenovo X200, and I love it) right now and I've had it since before I even knew what an iPad was! And before that I had a different tablet pc for 4 years! And before that they still existed!

Upmodded for the Lenovo x200 from my x61. They're absolutely fantastic computers.

Upvoted for upmodding for Lenoxo x200 from your x61 from my x60t! :)
I just bought the x201t with multitouch. I can't wait for it to get here.
[–]Fidodo 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Ahhgg! It's out already? I got mine in December. I didn't think the 201 would be out so soon. My old computer was dying though so I couldn't really wait. Oh well. It's not like I could afford the extra $700 anyways, and at the time I got it I found a $400 coupon code. Did they upgrade the multitouch? Mine has 2 finger, but I heard they were coming out with 4.

Sadly it's still 2-finger multitouch, but the videos make it look more responsive than the screen seen in the videos of the x200t. I think the big improvement is the speed, with a Core i7 processor that runs at 2.13 to 2.9 GHz. My x60t scales from 1 GHz to 1.6 GHz, so I'm hoping for a significant improvement.
How well does your x200t screen work with multitouch? Is it accurate enough to click your average-sized button?
My multitouch screen is responsive. I don't think I have any problems with it. Maybe the drivers improved? I'm guessing it will be the same screen if it's still 2 finger. If anything the only lag I experience would be from normal computer slowness.
The accuracy is good, but there is the problem that your finger is just a lot bigger than a point. I find that I miss what I'm aiming for because a different part of my finger touches the screen than what I expect, which isn't a fault of the hardware. Not to mention, your finger covers up what you're pointing at which makes it harder to aim. Plus the fact that pc apps just aren't designed for touch input so most buttons are just really small. But something like a normal button is totally touchable.
Even still, I really like the multitouch because I just use it way more often than the pen. The convenience of not having to take out the pen is great. Windows 7 also has a great feature that you can touch scroll on any windows native navigational box with a scroll bar. Not a good enough feature to convince me to use IE though. Instead there's a firefox plugin called grab and drag. I would use that even with just mouse input. It even has throw physics which feels awesome while scrolling a page. I also have an extension so I can drag a link let go anywhere and open it in a new tab that way so I don't have to press any control modifiers. Windows also implements a feature called flicks where you can make a flicking motion and do some hotkey functions like back or forward, copy paste, etc.
The only problem I found is that the pen and touch drivers are bundled, which means you can't install the wacom pen driver without disabling multi touch, and you need the wacom pen driver to get pen pressure to work in photoshop. That's more of an Adobe problem though because they're responsible for getting their program to work with relevant hardware. Pressure works fine with other programs so I wouldn't blame the computer company. They could debundle the drivers though so you could have a wacom pen driver with a lenovo multitouch driver.
Ah, some great advice with those Firefox addons. I'll check it out. I heard about the Wacom/Lenovo driver conflict, and it seems so surprising that you can't install the Wacom pen tablet drivers and still have multitouch work. Pressure sensitivity in apps like Photohsop and Alias Sketchbook is the main reason I'm buying the computer; I even asked them when I ordered it if both pressure sensitivity and multitouch would work, and no one the sales rep contacted knew for sure. I told them I'd return the laptop if it didn't, so we'll see.

Sorry but they wont work simultaneously for the said reasons. Really they have no control over the situation, but I think they could de-bundle the drivers. Maybe people could convince a software developer to recompile the drivers or something? I'm guessing the Lenovo drivers are following some Microsoft protocol, while Wacom is following their own. Since they're both proprietary they probably don't communicate the same way, especially since Wacom and Photoshop are designed to pair together, so it isn't generic. Wacom said they don't support TabletPCs because of it, and I don't expect Lenovo to do anything special to coordinate with Adobe. I'd say either Adobe fixes their program to work with TabletPCs, or Lenovo depackages their drivers.

I used to use one of the HP TC-4400's, and let me say I never used it in tablet form. Oh except when I wanted to draw stuff instead of pay attention in boring meetings.
I like the multitouch screen because you're much more likely to use it. The Lenovo is also nice because it's light and doesn't heat up much. My old tablet was kinda lunky to hold around and got way too hot. Some uses are definitely more used than others. They excel with note taking and image editing. One idea I heard someone wanted to use it for writing note annotations on students reports. It has the pen and paper feel with digital efficiency. Unfortunately there's a sad lack of development going on in the Tablet PC world. Hopefully this iPad interest helps us out but then we'll have to deal with mac zealots claiming how they came up with the technology.

As ugly an interface as ever.
[–]twodayslate 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Love how the technology has been there for 2 years and in that two years, the price has been reduced by 2/3rds. :)
[–]purplestain 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Wow, i love how in the little trailer video they have they type in Indie Rock in the search bar... AH SO COOL ALL INDIE ROCKERS MUST HAVE ONE?!
[–]Stingray88 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
5 million points to whoever can figure out what song they used in the video!
[–]k4f123 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
this is a pretty terrible video...does nothing for me.
[–]Stingray88 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The song does a fuck load for me. Anyone know what it is?

Is Windows really the best OS for a tablet?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Have you tried Win 7's touch interface?
No, but most Windows apps (99.999%) aren't designed for a touch interface, unlike iPhone and Android apps.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
The thing is, it's about perceptions. I own an iPod Touch so I'm well aware of the polish, but I had this same debate with some commenters on Engadget.
They had problems understanding how one would press the "tiny" icons in the Office menu ribbon. I asked them to tell me how "big" the buttons were on their iPhones...ie the back button in the browser. Not pixels mind, the actual real world measurements. They were tiny in comparison to the on screen icons they were calling tiny. only mm's across.
It's as if you make a touch device with a bigger screen and people expect their fingers should grow to match it. Your fingers are the same size at all times, so unless the Windows icons are smaller than any icon you can find on your hand held touch device, they're not small at all. Windows 7 was designed with touch in mind.
The only problem people would have would be existing apps, but with more and more touch enabled devices running Windows developers should follow suit soon. We expect all this development work for the iPad/iPhones but seem to not think anyone is developing for a platform we all use daily. It's strange.

Well tablets have been around for ages now, and I think relying on what's really a desktop OS is why they never took off.
I bet that given the possibility, people are just gonna run normal Windows apps on this and (like you said) be disappointed with the experience compared to highly polished iPhone/Android apps.
[–]Sailer 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
If I can't buy it I have no interest in the chatter about it.
[–]eleitl 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
and price point that will make this product a mainstream offering,
Wow, they want to sell it below 500 USD? Win 7 runs on ARM now?
[–]derekaw 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Do you need a full blown O/S on a tablet? How usable will a desktop app be on a tablet form factor when run in a desktop O/S?
[–]xaueious 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I've used Windows 7 and Vista on a tablet pc. Touch screen functions are useless right now because the interface isn't designed for it. You do not want to finger type on Windows 7 because it sucks.
all it takes is a username and password
create account
is it really that easy? only one way to find out...
already have an account and just want to login?
