Bar fights: design intervention to reduce cost and injuries (core77.com)

Neat idea, but I think bars would resort to ordering plastic cups before they shelled out for super-sciencey glasses.
EatSleepJeep 32 points33 points34 points 1 month ago[-]
If this solution doesn't work then the UK government will just ban glass in pubs and bars altogether. For those that cry about it being the "nanny state," if your populace stopped acting like juveniles by breaking glasses over each others' faces then you wouldn't need a nanny.
Kitchenfire 11 points12 points13 points 1 month ago[-]
If I recall correctly, in the UK there are something like 70,000 (yes, seventy thousand) incidents annually involving someone in a pub jamming a broken glass into someone's face/body.
You don't get maimed by wild animals in the UK, you get maimed by wild drunks.
collector7 -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 month ago[-]
"if your populace stopped acting like juveniles by breaking glasses over each others' faces then you wouldn't need a nanny."
You seem to fail at logic. Basically you are saying that since people can be bad we need to give people a monopoly on the use of force (government) over other people. I didn't know people automatically became more ethical when they were called the government.
tbydal 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago[-]
No he's saying a big chunk of the population are jamming broken glass into each others faces. Replacement with plastic cups will eliminate this problem. Failing at logic? Do you even know what logic is?
bluGill 0 points1 point2 points 29 days ago[-]
Replacement with plastic cups will eliminate this problem
Broken plastic is sharp as well. You break it in different ways, but creative drunks will figure out how to get the same effect.
tbydal 1 point2 points3 points 28 days ago[-]
No, it simply doesn't. Try to cut something with a plastic bottle. Injuries sustained by "glassing" are horrific. Parts of the face peeled directly off the skull, or blindness, or even death from blood loss. The scarring is dreadful.
shniken 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
Some Australian governments* (I know Victoria has) have banned glass in some pubs.
*I think it was either a "request" from the police or from the liquor licencing body.
logrusmage -12 points-11 points-10 points 1 month ago[-]
You've managed to completely miss the point of the term "nanny state." Congrats! You're a facist! =D
aGorilla 22 points23 points24 points 1 month ago[-]
How so? Banning glasses in bars seems like a perfect example of a "nanny state" law, that's how most of that shit passes.
redDEADresolve 6 points7 points8 points 1 month ago[-]
plastic ruins the taste of the beer.
mexicodoug 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]
It's also hard to fill a plastic cup without overdoing it on head.
wurtis16 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago[-]
Bars in the states usually get the glasses free from sales reps and liquor distributors. They don't incur any cost for pints.
notjawn 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
Yeah I would like to see the shatter proof glasses in action. Anything is better than those 10 oz rip off mugs some bars use.
wurtis16 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
Most glasses are 16 with two fingers of head so about 14 oz.
TREQ_DRQS_MSG_PN 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
There are certain bars that will lose much of their business if they switch to plastic, though I doubt that that set intersects much with that of bars where broken glass in someone's face is a constant concern.
PopeJohnPaulII 24 points25 points26 points 1 month ago[-]
I think they underestimate the craftiness of a drunk.
HaMMeReD 9 points10 points11 points 1 month ago[-]
Exactly, there are still bar stools, pool cues, pool balls, darts and many other bar related dangerous things about.
I think they should only be allowed to drink from a straw out of a hole in a padded room.
TREQ_DRQS_MSG_PN 12 points13 points14 points 1 month ago* [-]
I like this idea. I will present you with a mystery object, from which you'll imbibe, through a hole. It's brilliant, just needs a marketing name. How about "glory hole?"
edit: I'll get started marketing this on craigslist.
SmartAssX 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
They may have turned the glasses in to rocks.... i guess there going to make the bar stool more safe some how? Oh, and what about the pitcher?
psyne 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
Yeah, I have to wonder how much better it will be now that people will just bludgeon eachother with their glasses rather than stab.
Juggernath 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
Tethered to the table by a contraption similar to a laptop lock. The waitresses have the keys.
SmartAssX 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]
Noted, hit on waitresses more to get keys.
davel_jonez 11 points12 points13 points 1 month ago[-]
So, what's up with England and bar fights?
IndicaVsSativa 33 points34 points35 points 1 month ago[-]
I think it has something to do with how they are far more civilized than America or mainland Europe.
jordanlund 6 points7 points8 points 1 month ago[-]
The first design will just make pint glasses a better bludgeon.
skwigger 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]
this was my thought. I now have a nice weapon to beat the other guy with, and I don't have to worry about the glass shattering and doing severe damage to my hand.
elquesogrande 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago[-]
Anyone else see this as putting a band-aid on the symptom?
Tantivy 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago[-]
Yes, but sometimes that's all you can do. We have a terrible drinking culture, but that's been part of England's identity for hundreds of years - seriously, Chaucer makes jokes about it - and so any attempt to deal with the root causes of this kind of shit is going to require a massive shift in people's attitudes towards alcohol. Of course, the alternative is just to ban Stella.
They successfully branded Stella as a premium beer here in the US. Talk about a massive shift in attitudes towards alcohol.
Ashex 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
I'm kind of glad it has been branded as that. I dislike drinking beer and Stella is one I can tolerate. Now that people think it's fancy beer I don't get crap.

It'll hold a pint, since when things are sold by pints they have to actually give you a pint!
sunshine-x -5 points-4 points-3 points 1 month ago[-]
no shit.. a classic example of a solution looking for a problem.
Here's an idea - plastic glasses. Done.
evrae 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
What? Did you somehow contrive to miss:
The British Design Council enlisted a local design studio - DesignBridge - to make the glasses more difficult to smash and less dangerous to the victim.
sunshine-x 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
Regardless, it's a ridiculous solution to their problem. The solution could have simply been "plastic cups". Boom, done. No need to change manufacturing processes, no need for bio-coatings (whatever that is), no need for additional cost.
Is there a reason the obvious solution, plastic cups, was not an option?
kibitzor 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago[-]
Well, looks like they'll start bringing knives now.
llanor 10 points11 points12 points 1 month ago[-]
There are only two knives left in England.
eskimofo 9 points10 points11 points 1 month ago[-]
And one is stuck into the back of lady liberty!
magusprimal 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
It is my turn with the other one next, I need to make a sandwich.
helekopters 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
No worries, instead of the glass breaking into a bunch of really tiny worthless and mildly dangerous shards, it will break into a few small yet tough shanks that you can easily stab your opponent with.
thisisvariable 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]
Sweet! I can't wait to begin the process of 'upgrading' all the 'legacy' pint glasses I have at home with these!
tjcoyle 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
What does go on over there? I've seen many a bar here in the states over the course of nearly 20 years, and only two incidences where I can recall fists being drawn.
Nearly ever bar I've been to has glass pints, too, quite a few with hefty pitchers.
easyjet 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
I've grown up (sort of) in UK bars and pubs despite not actually being much of a drinker, but its sociable. Never really had any trouble, seen 2 or 3 fights in 20 years, most of the time, its outside on the street. More often than not its girls. There are many towns where the bar areas are heaving with people, lots of cheap booze and of course some trouble. Its not everyday all day. Its generally kids - `18-24 who cant handle their drink. Most english people cant handle their drink - they think they can - but they cant, and peoples responsibility level is about 0. Many people will tell you they explicitly drink to get drunk, totally and utterly ratarsed, to use a colloquialism.
Personally, I think that hospitals should charge people who are admitted if the reason is alcohol. A nice fat bill for a few grand for getting stitched up at 3am would have a massive effect. Hard to administer though.
in_vitro 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
Begbie will not be pleased.
thatmorrowguy 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
Darn, the drunks will just have to resort to beer bottles instead.
GoForTheEyes 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
They're now pouring the contents from the glass bottles to the plastic glasses around the waterholes I've visited.
sotonohito 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
They're taking the wrong approach. Health care costs lots of money. Funerals cost significantly less. Cleansing the gene pool of the sort of thug/idiot who enjoys bar brawls is a valuable public service.
We need to make bar fights increasingly deadly, not less dangerous.
psilokan 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago[-]
You missed prototype #3, when struck with it the glass will explode sending shrapnel into the brawler's faces and killing them instantly.
sotonohito 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago[-]
See, I can get behind that one.
RedSalesperson 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago[-]
You should probably stand to the side, to avoid the shrapnel.
DougTGN 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
That's all well and good unless you've just been accosted by some drunken git when you don't want to fight.
What you need is some kind of magical backfiring glass that when it shatters just wrecks the hand of the guy holding it :P
ENOTTY 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
Would the energy that used to go into breaking apart the glass now smack up against something more solid and cause greater injury?
Charlie-Green-Rug 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]
No, the damage that results from being hit by a glass is because the glass smashes, and proceeds to cut your face off.
Charlie-Green-Rug 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
Doesn't matter how good an idea it is, if it costs the club owner more to use these glasses, then they won't get used.
zen_tm 9 points10 points11 points 1 month ago[-]
You forget that most pubs get their premium glasses provided free by the brewerys as a branding exercise.
jdhawk 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago[-]
The possibility of branding would allow beer producers to offer glasses at highly discounted prices (free) for pubs that stock their brews.
Nearly all mmajor brewers do this already.
logrusmage 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
If they don't provide more benefit than they cost then how exactly can they be a good idea?
They'd benefit the NHS, which would spend less money on dickheads getting injured in barfights. And they would obviously benefit dickheads getting in barfights, because they wouldn't be getting their faces cut open with such regularity.
But since neither of those people are paying for the glasses, and since the club owner couldn't give a shit about the dickheads OR the NHS, the only thing that will make these glasses a success is making them more cost effective than regular glasses.
If what you're saying is true then it might make sense for the NHS to buy these glasses and give them to pubs for free.
I think some kind of government rebate scheme would be workable.
aGorilla 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
I would imagine it would reduce the odds of the owner being sued.
tbrennandc 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
All i saw was "beer colder, for longer."
DEADB33F 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago* [-]
What's wrong with using tempered glass? Carling glasses already do this, and it works great.
It has to be far cheaper & environmentally sustainable than this system.
Hookhand 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
That's racist.
gerg6111 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]
or you could stop serving drunks.
rufflesdance 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

gerg6111 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
yes. and stop calling me fat.
stunkcrunk 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

TopRamen713 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]
If that were the case here, I wouldn't go to bars
terumo -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]
hmmmm, that is towards bard fights, nobody will buy it, we need more damage.
driftersgold -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]
